I currently have it.
Anybody that wants it is more than welcome to have it.
Meant to ask about the Snuggie after the Christmas party. Tradition has been to gift it to the next person at the barn party and they post a pic of it in their travels and pass along the following year.

I have had it for a couple of years. And stuffed it in the 80 and forgot about it. I took it out a few months back and honestly would have to look for it.
I did take it on quite a few awesome trips over the last two years but I never remembered to put it on or take a photo with it.

In my defense, I do carry an Onsc banner with me everywhere I go and usually take a photo of it when I go places.

Hey everyone in the CLT area. Does anyone have a strong recommendation on a shop that can rebuild a '96 1FZ-FE? Budget it not unlimited but there is also no rush either so if anyone knows somebody who may want a side project, let me know. Additionally, how much does this typically cost? I know this will vary greatly but ballpark would be fine.

I’ve recently heard 8-10k for a rebuild. Of course it depends on the extent of it. I have one needing rebuilt as well.

That seems like a lot, is that including all Toyota parts? And the work to pull the engine and put it back? At any rate I'm also curious if anyone has a recommendations my oil consumption is pretty high.

Mine was around $6k in 2019 with machine shop work and all Toyota parts at OTRAMM in Northern Virginia. I hear that's still a viable number in many markets. I can highly recommend them for probably anything a vehicle needs.

Oil consumption on a 1FZ is typically due to worn valve seals. It is common to machine the head and replace valve seals as part of a head gasket job. Head gasket job will average $3k including parts and labor.

I think I could probably pull off a headgasket job myself, but after 338k miles I'd hate to go to all the trouble to pull the head and have bottom end issues. Given the reputation for the 1FZ being stout after the miles I'd probably be ok though... I've done a compression test before but should probably do another.

As I'm moving into a place with no garage in a few months any suggestions for reputable shops for a headgasket job?

That's understandable, and I wouldn't argue against a rebuild in your case. I will say this...Toyota considers the 1FZ a 500k mile engine. Check your compression. If it averages 130+ psi and if no cylinders vary more than 20 percent, pop a new head gasket on and enjoy it for another 100k+. I can't recommend a shop to do this. The last time I recommended a local shop (the one everybody in Charlotte recommends) the customer had a bad experience. My recommendation is to do it yourself if you want it done right, or send it to OTRAMM for a full rebuild as JohnVee said. They'll do it right.

Thanks for the advice Dave appreciated as always. Sorry to hijack your question @ZachG

@ZachG For a head job I’d go to Daniel Benfield, Benfield Autoworks. He is was a Certified Toyota mechanic and now runs his own shop just outside of Hickory. He is a one man shop that’s super honest and reasonably priced. I’ve taken my 40th and my brothers Tacoma there for repairs a few times in the past 6 months.

Message me if you want and I’ll share his contact information.

I'll definitely consider the recommendation if he's worked on a 40th before and been ok with it.

He’s done complete rebuilds on 1FZ. He had just finished one when I took mine. However, he’ll say he prefers not to take on full rebuilds at this time. Head jobs, another story. Talks it and knows it pretty well. An all around solid mechanic. It was hard to find a local that has experience with the 1FZ.

Fwiw, last 1fz I had apart to correct excess oil consumption had a good head gasket, but 5 bad valve guides, and all bad valve seals. The head work alone took over a month.

You can change valve seals without removing the head, so if your compression is good, that's what I'd do if it were my motor. Far cheaper than having the head reconditioned.

Well my headgasket is also original as far as I know ...

Does anyone in the club have a current Toyota dealer sales contact? A friend outside the club is looking for a new 4runner and asked me if I knew anyone.

I don't have any Toyota dealer sales rep contacts, but thought one of you all might. Let me know please and thank you!
