I dunno. Those Cummins are pretty sweet. And this one is well looked after.

The 6.7 IS sweet

My only compliant is brake/hydraulics related.....seems to be a weak point.....not in performance but longevity

The backings on the brake pads are the cheapest chinesium pot metal crap and rust causing the pad to drag against the rotor

Clutch and Brake hydraulics are not so long lived as toyota.

New stage one SBC is in process of being installed and eliminating the crap dual mass flywheel in process.

Wish they still offered it with the 6spd transmission which is part of reason I will never sell mine.

I guess I'm outing myself as having an affinity for straight 6 diesels

Oil pan is finally sitting on the floor. But it did not just fall off... Anyone who says it's an easy job possibly had a previous owner who'd affixed it with double faced tape. 🤣

So I got all the bolts (and two nuts) out easy peasy.

(Yes that is Utah dirt in the pic. I've washed it underneath several times since the trip but...?)

Then I started with my gasket cutting tool. Not the most expensive one but it didn't fall apart so it did what it was supposed to? The problem was... There's virtually no room on the LHS. Possibly this is the fault of the extra driveshaft? (PTO winch).

After several hours hammering the tool in, slowly advancing it, AND using a razor blade, etc etc, the RHS seemed like it was getting closer. But the left? Couldn't even get my tool to bite. Finally I took a scraper I had, and put it to the grinder and made a pretty wicked looking three edged knife... After much finagling I was able to use a long 1/2" socket extension to slowly tap my new tool sideways into the gasket. Then the process of tapping it fore and aft began again. I couldn't get the same access as the other side but after a few more hours I got it semi loose. THEN I decided to remove the two transmission stays (yes I know) and finally it dropped down.

By this time I was utterly done in (still fighting nasty flu that has had me sidelined for 4 days) so didn't look too closely but no initial signs of anything bad.

Except for me. This was one of the dirtiest jobs I've done in years. Jackstands is not ideal for this one. I had to take the tub of Orange Cleaner and a scrub pad with me into the shower! :ninja:

I feel your pain. Some years back I removed the oil pan from a dead HZJ81 I had sitting in the driveway. Probably a little more space around the pan in an 80, but I still spent several hours on my back in the gravel driveway hammering away at the little seal cutter. Not a pleasant job!

Hole drilled.

AN fitting is now welded and leak tested. I have a cap for it too so I don't feel pressure to attach anything to it just yet. (Just to be clear I have an AN cap. The blue plug is purty but not permanent).

I will now move forward with big end bearings.

I am sure you have already thought of this, but remember to put a little medium duty thread locker on that when you do go to put the return line on there. Engine vibration.

Well I finally got working on it. I've been putting it off since I was a little intimidated to do them, but I've now got two sets done. Both 3 and 4 showed wear but no delamination.
PXL_20240630_014240635.webp

I'll do the other 4 sets tomorrow.

This particular post was really helpful in tackling this, so a shout out to @Bonznfc for taking the time to detail the process.

I used plastigage on the first one and the spec was inside the factory recommended so I decided to go ahead with the std bearings (which so far is what has come out). Assembly lube was spread on and I used new bolts. That last 90 degrees past torque made the new bolts seem worth the investment.

Hope to finish this tomorrow and then I'll line up the old bearings for an open house.

Started the truck last night after putting in new oil and changing the filter. I must admit, I was a little nervous, but it started up and ran the same as always. Whew. And so far no signs of leaks. Still need to reinstall the transmission stays and take it off jackstands, but at least the bearings are done.

We have a camping trip coming up with the 100 series and travel trailer, but once I get back it's time to get ready for another road trip with olBetsy to the BC Overland Rally!

A while back you might recall I replaced the slide out insert in my front runner drop down with a fancy one my brother made for me from a wood/resin mold. It looked exactly how I'd hoped but had a little too much flex when it was slid out with weight on it.

Usually we want flex in our landcruisers, but not in this case. 😎 So today I attached some L-track to the middle, which gave the slide out the spine it needed, while also giving me attachment points when the kitchen is deployed.

A small detail mod, yes. But those are my favorite kind. Also, it allows me to put off changing my diff fluids and repacking a wheel bearing.

-Wheel bearing done.
-Diffs, tcase, trans fluid checked.
-Oil changed (well couldn't really avoid that one when I was dropping the pan to do the BEBs).

She hasn't moved in almost 4 weeks but at least she's off jackstands. Tomorrow I gas (edit) FUEL her up. Oops. Load the fridge. Pack my gear. And then Thursday we are off to the BC Overland Rally! (A buddy is riding shotgun.) Temps are supposed to be high 30s°c so should be a good test. (Of man and machine).

Nice work! Today was 40C/104F in the shade. Thankfully by the time you get here it is (only) going to be highs around 35C. 🥵

Too bad I am headed the opposite direction this weekend, it would have been great to see you again! 😃

Yeah you too buddy. There will be a next time! And I'm glad to hear that it's going to "cool off".... 🥵

Had a great time at the BCOR. Camped with my Rover friends and listened to their tales of woe around the campfire each night. Lol. Saw a couple of 70 series pickups and got to lean over the hood of a pop top vdj78 troopy driven by a German who bought it in Australia. Drool...

Taught a few classes (tire repair in the field and pretrip inspection). Met some cool folks with cool rigs, like @kim and his awesome 60 series. Also got to run the off-road course a few times as well. Overall all systems worked well except my Renogy mppt controller that internally shorted on day 2 and is now in the process of warranty validation.

A buddy got a few vids that I'll post when I get a chance to edit.

Today... I got a project half done that has been sitting on the shelf for two years. A snorkel! This is a widebody version which was why I was loath to put it on, but got it on a trade for parts etc so I figured I'd give it a try. It is not hooked up to the air box yet. But at least I managed to attach it and it doesn't look terrible considering it was made for a different truck?

I have some more things to do with the "air intake" first and then I'll come back and figure out how to hook this up.

So yes. Right now I'm a poseur. You can keep a secret. Right? 🤫

Hello,

Is it possible to raise the snorkel a little to keep it level/in line with the fender rib? Or perhaps lower it, as is the case with the pre-2007 snorkel?

I tried every position possible (via bungees and clamps) but any higher was partly above the fender and lower was below the seam. The top of the snorkel body is slightly rounded. And it doesn't fit in the recess the way the factory one does (too big) but the bonus is that the tube itself appears to be bigger in circumference so perhaps better airflow? We'll see.

It is level with the fender line and flush/tight to the fender. This was the spot where it sat the tightest too. It is in effect fitting a square peg in a round hole so I'm happy with the results.

I helped a buddy fit a pathfinder snorkel a month or two ago, and I've fitted Pajero snorkels in the past, as well as a Prado 90. Oddly, none went on as tight to the fender as this one!
