You have to drop the windshield to remove the screws that help hold the pad in place. There are brackets that the knob screws, screw into that are bolted to the frame. I keep my hard top assembled.

Does anyone have a tutorial on how to remove the dashpad without destroying it?
Also, the knobs for the windshield are seized. I've been soaking them with some penetrating oil but they don't budge. 1 is missing the plastic knob.
I tried a pair of vise grips on the right one to try to work it back and forth but it's not moving.

Here’s a few detail photos of what you have. This is a 1974. The windshield knob bolts are long, and tilted up, so there’s a good chance that your penetrating fluid isn’t reaching the threads. The dash pad is secured with 5mm machine screws across the bottom, and the top is clamped in as indicated along the length. You might have to remove the hinges or hinge pins to get the glass folded down. :-(

A lot of people swear by products like WD-40 and PB Blaster. For the most part on everyday tasks they work but some jobs are beyond their capabilities. That is where Kroil comes to the rescue! Don't get me wrong, I have my WD-40 but when it fails I break out the Kroil.

It works pretty good for cleaning rifle barrels, too.

I need to lay the windshield down to remove the insert for the soft top that was left on when the PO set the hard top back on but now it wont sit flush and rattles a lot. I guess I could remove the top, sides and back hatch piece by piece. How do you all store your top, sides and doors when not in use?

I will be curious to see what you find with this. I have the same issue when I put my doors and soft top on. I have gone through the gaskets under the wind shield and it all looks good.

I just ordered some new bezel spacers to help with the metal on metal contact. @Living in the Past told me about them back in 2022 on a different project I had at the time. Part number 53112-90300. I also just ordered a new set of TRE's from CCOT. I took it out for another spin around the neighborhood and the ride got a little wild after 45mph.

The bikini top bracket is on the front windscreen under the hard top. Take that off while hardtop is on. Weather stripping goes there when top is on. City racer is your friend for 1974 weather stripping . Check Toyota. I think back hatch is still OEM and a few other piece too.

Fair warning, I ordered the Tre kit from CCOT and ended up replacing them after just 1K miles because they had movement in em and I couldn’t really align the truck. Ended up buying some 555 TREs and replacing them.

The tie rods are supposed to pivot usually from changing direction from right to left or vice-versa. A bad tre the stud wobbles within the socket of the tre. Pivoting is ok.

I appreciate the heads up. I'll keep this in mind.

2nd… that’s where I got the 555 TREs and my 62 thanks me for them.

IMNSHO, CCOT is fine for sunvisors or calendars. For stopping or steering I go to one of the top-shelf vendors.
