I cut a notch in the air cleaner bracket so I could get a socket on the manifold nut. Yep removed the two head bolts to do that. Put them back in by 1/3 torque. Went for a drive, stopped for lunch, returned home and retorqued all to 100% in sequence - no issues yet and it has been like 20 years..

A pic is worth a thousand words. 😊 I’ll pull an insulator and mounting studs for you as well. Retorquing the head bolts is not an issue before you fire the engine. I’ll go over the details with you when we meet.😉
Great, thank you. I have the parts to restore the throttle linkage. I need to get them out today and clean them up. I'll bring them with me in case that makes a difference or I am missing something.

Run cable for the throttle, if you are going to not use the 2F intake manifold. Or, am I missing something? The torque rod fits the 2F intake manifold?
As far as I know it's a 2F intake and exhaust manifold. The current head is a 2F head. Photos in other threads if you want I'll pull them up.

The oil filter is mounted on the manifolds? 2F?

Yes, the crank case is a 1F. The oil filter is "remote mounted" and supplied through the oil regulator attached to the driver's side of the crank case. When I got it, it was attached to the radiator support strut. I replaced the rubber lines with stainless steel from Red Line Land Cruisers. The mounting plate is from SOR. Not sure what the year is for the manifold.

On the new engine the oil filter is on the passenger side. You can see it in the photo above of the valve cover.

On my '75 intake manifolds, there is a crankcase ventilation hose. It has a t-fitting with two barbs - a 17(ish)mm PCV hose to PCV valve, and a 3mm barb for fuel tank fumes, iiac. Because there is an oil filter bracket in place of the 2F-style plumbing, it leads me to question if you have a 2F intake manifold? I can get a measurement if you need.

Yes, the engine is under that valve cover. Currently sitting on a pallet.
I hadn’t even noticed it was on the engine! Oh man….. carry on!

In the meantime, I had an idea while I was hiking in the hills about how to account for the difference in the standoff of the F manifolds and the 2F firewall.

If you made a copy of 2” of the torque rod bracket where it attaches to the studs on the intake, you could bolt your stock bracket to the new ‘horseshoe’ one inch away from its stock position, at which point the bracket would align with the firewall.

Then you could either lengthen the short rod to the carb 1”, or buy the nifty rod that @ToyotaMatt offers. Maybe if you order one now, you will get it by the time you need it!😛

Got home yesterday and started test fitting parts today. My biggest concern was the fit of the air cleaner on the new carb. The PO (or probably the PPO) cut the air cleaner cover in order to fit the Rochester carb. Thankfully Beau @bparker had a spare in his stores. I test fit the new carb on the manifold and lo and behold, it drops right in.

Looking at the parts I have I have a few questions.
  1. I need the carb to air cleaner gasket. Is the correct part number 17848-60021?
  2. Is there a clamp that compresses the air cleaner onto the carb, I can't find a drawing of that connection?
  3. I have two linkage mounting plates, @65swb45 you said one was right and one was for another model. I think the one on the right is the correct one for an FJ40.

4. The studs fit either way. Is the correct orientation "pointy side" into the manifold?

Tomorrow I'll get started on the throttle linkage and see if I have all the right parts. I noticed that the carb is missing the choke cable screw(s). So I'll run out to get them too. They appear to be 3 or 4 mm.

Matt I’m pretty sure my linkage part is the one on the left on my ‘77, but I like you was installing an Aisin carb later in the ownership of the 40. You may have to experiment with both to find out which one give the best results with linkage geometry and operation. My carb is a 76 and I’m pretty sure my linkage parts are not an exact match so there was some work involved to get the best result. That said Marks carb is older so the one on the right may work best for your application. Looks like fun…

1. PN sounds correct
2. Yes, a clamp is used.
3. The bracket on the right is the one that should work
4. The side of the stud with the tip faces up.
