There are no visual cues to say so. I’d stick with the legacy tapered coils. For the new version, is the diameter (gauge) of the coil wire tapered?
I’ve read your thread and hope I dont suffer the same fate, I’m hoping to hit somewhere near 35” on all four corners. I’ll have front bumper and winch, sliders and rear bumper double swung with a 35” spare out back, not sure what she will weigh so we‘ll see. The springs were a bargain used so I went for them.I have a weird feeling they cut production on the OG tapered coils because they were a pain to get consistent. I’m running the 2.5” tapered coils and I get a solid 4” with the 80 weighing 6300 lbs. I talked to one of the dobinsons reps for a month and sent him every measurement I could on the springs. He ended up telling me that the lift height I was getting was completely different than what the spring calculator predicted it should be. It seems like these spring can give anywhere from 2” to 4” of lift and despite the weight of the 80. They’re amazing springs despite getting random lift heights, I wouldn’t trade mine for anything else. But I bet they got tired of the complaints, more complicated production, and the cost![]()
The springs still work great! I just wish I went with the 6” shocksI’ve read your thread and hope I dont suffer the same fate, I’m hoping to hit somewhere near 35” on all four corners. One too many beers on my wife’s 60th, let’s try 23” hub to fenderThe springs still work great! I just wish I went with the 6” shocks. I’m sure you’ll be stoked with them! And is that 35” from the ground to the flare? Usually it’s measure from the hub to the flare, mines a about 24”.
Hahaha That the height I wish I had! And congratulationsOne too many beers on my wife’s 60th, let’s try 23” hub to fender
Fresh 3.5" VT coils on the front. 27" hub to fender (no flares). I need to check again but 27" was on the night I installed them. One too many beers on my wife’s 60th, let’s try 23” hub to fender

Installing my "new model" VTs today - will post up numbers tonight.Well to through a wrench in the lift height my 146VT 2.5" coils I have received 2" of lift & then when I swapped sides to get rid of the coil shim they sit at 21.5" bottom of fender... So I added the 25mm spacer in there to reach a 2.5" lift.... go figure.
That would make sense relative to the manufacturing efficiencies comment. Ensuring the taper is created to spec and positioned correctly within the coil definitely adds some complexity to the manufacturing process. Likely slows output versus a more traditional design as well. I’ve wondered how much difference it really made anyway. It would be interesting to see the actual deflection curves of tapered vs variable vs linear. There are no visual cues to say so. I’d stick with the legacy tapered coils.

But it's a bougie spring.It’s just a spring ...
It’s just a spring ...
And it’s MUD 80’s forum. I’d expect no less lolBut it's a bougie spring.
For all its foolishness, mud is probably the best forum in its category. And it’s MUD 80’s forum. I’d expect no less lol
Simplistically so…until it doesn’t perform as desired.It’s just a spring ...
