My Newly-Vented Hood (20 photos!)

Got the vents installed this weekend. Neither of the two compressors I used had the power to run the same saw that Rob used, so I ended up using a jigsaw with a good metal blade. Worked well, but a little cumbersome - be sure to over-tape your area to allow for the big butt end on the saw to move around and not scratch your paint if you use a jig saw.

I have PM'd hzavarce about getting the templates next, if he still wants them. If not, will go to next in line.

 -Flank.

Great job, Flank! They look as good as they work, too!!!

Cheers, and stay cool[ish]...

Rob

If someone can send me the template I can make vector of it then anyone can print it. Unless that is part of the allure... sharing a single template.

The template that made its way across america, one hood at a time.

NLXTACY, yours is a very generous offer...

I need to point out that the size and shape of the underhood bracing makes it important to locate the vents with some precision... the system that I used drills two 'locator holes' up from the bottom and the cutting template uses those two holes to locate the template on the top of the hood with the needed degree of precision... it's stone-ax texcnology but works beautifully. I'm certainly not suggesting that "my way" is the only way, but it does work well enough to put the vents in exactly the right place... first try!

Happy (and careful) cutting!

Rob

A template would be great if someone can make it happen. Now I gotta find some of the vents. No luck on ebay or Rockauto.

Actually, I may just look into getting some louvers punched in the hood. There is a guy here in DFW that does it, may have to hit him up. Hmmmmmm.......

I'm in the DFW area also, can you share the info on who does the louvers? I have the Pontiac Z34 vents and may still go that route, but I really like the look of the punched louvers. Very old school.

Cheers,
Mike

BTW I called my local GM dealer and the driver's side is now discontinued with passenger following close behind. Now looking for these or another solution :(

Ebay, baby. Thats where I got mine.
Search GPX vents or Grand Prix Vents.

I think they look great, I had been thinking about venting my hood but just could not find a vent that look as good as those! I will re-read and see if I can sort out the model or even part number and find out where I can get a couple shipped over here SOON!! Re the rain my old Jag had vents punched into the steel bonnet however, underneath was a drip tray that had a small hose the led water away so nothing went into the engine bay.

Dave

I have a set if anyone wants them, 45 plus shipping. Justin

edit i have the chevy z34 vents if anyone is interested.

very nice installs guys. Can one of you post a picture of what they look like from the inside of the hood? I am confused about how they actually attach to the hood. thanks.

I used 3m vehicle trim tape. You can use rubber washers and screws as well.

Blimey they are huge! They must be at least twice as long as the ones on the OP car?

Dave
Nope, same ones. the vents aren't small - about13 or 14 inches long or so, but the picture is a bit of an optical illusion.

I was counting 5 slots on the ones on the car and 9 in the picture. Optical illusion or not I think my counting is close

You are exactly right, Dave... the ones in the eBay link are not the right ones and are probably not usable for our application. Keep looking...

The ones you are looking for are '94 ~ '96 Pontiac GTP (see Post #1)... the eBay description states that those are earlier years.

These are the right ones: 94 95 96 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX HOOD AIR GRILLE VENT 3181 | eBay They are at an excellent price -- OOPS, EDIT... they are a bit "pricey" at $75.00 each side, but they are NEW -- and there are several sets available... get 'em now, while you can (no, they are NOT mine!)
