I think it's so nice that nobody asked "where did his hair go???" :crybaby:

Dang... these photos are so unforgiving... :bang:

I wouldn't ask.;) You and my dad both have more hair up there than I do.

On the other hand, when it comes to chin hair, I've got you and my dad beat.:D

Nice vents. Makes me think about it, then ask, what about side/fender vents?

Someone did some Rover vents in a post, but I don't remember if they were functional or not. My thinking is that hood vents for an 80 are most needed in the slow crawl mode -- thus will be most effective if they are in the hood itself, given this will maximize heat loss from under the hood.

Very nice vents! Good job! They would not work here, because it is raining, snowing and every other types of moisture you can imagine is coming down.:bang: And, I am not talking about CO type rain.:)

Rob, Great looking vents! (and tons of goodies on your LC has me increasing to do list++++). Do those vents you added defeat purpose of snorkel?!

Great job. Any data on changes in intake/coolant temps before/after this mod? I'm hoping one of you has a Scangauge or equiv.

So there's no Subarus with hood scoops and vents in the NW? How do you keep the water from entering through your grill and the bottom of your engine compartment. :hillbilly:

Why would this be?

Snorks bring in cooler /cleaner air to the intake, and raise the air intake above the fender - how would holes in the hood defeat that purpose? Not like the engine is water tight anyway... And snorks do not help to exhaust engine heat...

Nope and our LCs have engine trays like 993s!;)

Looks great!

I have have thought about the mod for several months, even had it on my to do list before Moab (certainly didn't need it with the weather this year) and it seems that that were some drip trays standard on the GTP vents.

My thoughts were to keep the drip tray that is loacted over the electronics on during fall/winter conditions and remove it when warm dry weather came back around.

Did you source the vents from a wrecking yard or are they still available from GM? Part Numbers?

Thanks for your kind compliments!

I would forget the GM 'drip trays'... they are so restrictive that the vent louvers would wind up doing very, very little. If you feel that you need a bit of 'weather protection,' you would be much better off by making your own super-simple diverter to just redirect whatever water may come in downward and inward... away from the electrics.

However, both from Forum postings and from PMs, the conventional wisdom of the group is that such 'weather protection' is not needed.

Also, it seems clear that while in motion (driving), little or no water will come into the engine compartment.

These parts are no longer available from GM... best bet is probably eBay, or your local friendly 'junkyard!'

By the way, I kept my funky little templates, so if anyone wants to use them to do this project, just let me know.

There are two sets of these vent louvers on eBay right now... check 'em out at:

92-96 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX GTP HOOD VENTS JEEP: eBay Motors (item 130393985572 end time Jun-22-10 22:18:49 PDT)

1994-96 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Hood Louvers: eBay Motors (item 150445680632 end time May-29-10 08:04:25 PDT)

Have a great week!

Rob

I do have a Scangauge II but since all this work on our trusty ol' '96 has been done in such a flurry, I really have no 'before' temps for comparison to what I'm getting now.

I will be happy if these things just reduce under-hood temps even a little bit!

I don't know much about snorkels but thought they were simply to avoid water in the intake. Hence, I thought that made the LC better at water crossings and such. So I was just curious if the vents affected the use of the snorkel... I'm not yet to the point of adding a snorkel hence I hadn't looked in to their purpose. I see now though that the snorkel and vents do not clash purposes.

Sweet looking rig, Rob. You give me lots to aspire to!!!

Just got my Grand Prix GPX vent on order today... Will look to duplicate your efforts.

Sounds like you've got it figured out already, but the engine compartment is nowhere close to water tight in the first place, these vents won't see water until the engine bay is pretty well full from the grille opening, gap under the hood, and from underneath anyways.

Looks real good OP!

Concerning these vent louvers versus others... I like how they are swept back, which will reduce or eliminate water intake at rest or speed. I have seen a lot of other vents tried, and it looks like falling or wind-swept water would enter uninhibited.

Now, i don't think a bit of water under the bonnet will cause harm, but why invite it. I think these vents will do a great job of releasing heat and will keep most water out.

I was thinking it's awesome that an old cobber like you is supercharging and modifying your truck!. all the old blokes down here are the kind that own the most perfect pristine examples of certain cars around.

Usually when I see a pristine 60 series it's got an old man driving it, and probably owned it since new.

Yes

Bruddah Rob you:

Nice job on the hood

Nice pic of the Mrs.

Mahalo for sharing the project!

Looks good! I've been wanting to vent the hood of my 100 series

Hi All !... I eMailed Rob (CorvetteFan) to borrow his template, but he sent it to somebody and he does not remember who it was

Whoever has it, can you please send it back, or PM me for my address so you can ship it to me ?

it is a great mod, but I am afraid to cut into my hood, and having the template give me a boost of confidence

Thanks !
