2) being in Texas, AC is a necessity. And the backseat and rear needs to be cold too. What options are out there? I figured I would go with a newer/larger compressor. I think the harder part will be to find the bits for the inside. Any options/recommendations are appreciated.

Saw 'Elsie' at LCS last week. Remarked to the wife that "we don't have a 55 yet". She responded with, "you need to collect the whole set".

maybe someday.

Looks to be a nice truck. Good luck with her.

ha, thats funny J! I may have a line on another but cant go into details yet

Talked to Tucker today, who asked if I was going to use disc rims. What ?!?!? A quick call to LCS and I found out that my newly powder-coated rims wont fit :bang: Tucker sent me a link in which 1/4" spacers and a smidge of grinding off the caliper will fix the issue https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/598429-riveted-steelies-disc-brakes.html BIG thanks to Tucker for alerting me to this. I wasnt aware of riveted rims vs disc rims- ya learn something every day!

I will drop these off at LandCruiser Specialist tomorrow along with the 2 caliper bolts I forgot. So hopefully, tomorrow I will be driving her back home.

Spacers from PepBoys

I would be VERY careful with those spacers.

I went from this:

To this:

In about 500 meters!

I don't recommend them. IF you're dead set on using them, make sure your wheel studs are longer and torqued down well. Remember, now that you're extending the bolt out further, the shear amount is lower.

Just trying to save you my same embarrassment.

Thanks for your concern. I consulted with numerous CruiserHeads who gave the OK on the spacers. Personally I dont care for the idea, but I will use them for awhile and torque them down regularly. Until I find another set of rims I like anyway.

Snip.

Good lookin' out tho.

Update- reevesci came down a month ago and looked at the pig. Unfortunately, the roof rails are beginning to show signs of rot. Its not bad, but if you push in on the sides, you can hear the crackling. I am trying to decide what to do. I am realizing that this wont be a full resto, which is fine. So, my options are :

1- replace with a new roof. reevesci said this will be very $$$ for a shop to do, between 3000-3500 not including the parts or paint/primer + paint/primer labor. I am guessing this will put it around the 5-6K level, probably more because I have other dents that would need to be taken care of. I am most likely not going to do this
2- cut off the roof and build a cage/soft top. I like this idea a lot. Being in Texas, an open roof/convertible makes sense. I figure I could be in it for about 3K or less

If I go with option 2, I have to decide where to cut it. Options are
A- at the top of the pillars just below the roof. This would allow me to keep the doors and windows, and could be easier to fab up a cage from the top
B- cut where the glass/door channel meet. Then cap off the corners. I could put the cage down the pillars and weld them in. I would also have more of a soft top to make.

I did see a pic of a convertible blue/white 55 in the mountains. It looked great. I cant find it though, but I think some of you have seen this before.

I am open to ideas for sure on this.

On a different note, I managed to procure a non-US spec BJ42 split tcase with an ebrake on it, so this will be used when I do the OM617 swap.

Calling dibs on that roof. Looks pristine compared to me, in the pics at thread beginning.

I have heard the 7.3L PowerStroke is good, but the early 6.0L are bad news. I can't get a consensus on the later 6.0L Strokes...

Going back through this thread like a vulture looking for any good potential meat, read this again, and couldn't resist.

Let me clear this up, since I have vast experience well beyond my years with PowerSmoke's.

7.3L-Good

All else- Bad. Very, very bad.

Jas,

Here is the pig I was talking about. You could have OCD make you a custom bikini top for the roof or go completely open.

Just food for thought.

Jason, I saved the roof from that 77 body that I'm swapping with the 74 shell that you sold me. You are welcome to it. It has surface rust and old screw holes from a previous roof rack but the gutters are in good shape. It does pose the same problem that I had with trying to use the original doors with the 74 shell, rounded door frame corners versus the straight ones on the 74. I do however still have the 77 front doors as well. Mark

@jason, thanks for the pic. my concern is that the channels may not last. But I suppose I could get bobm's channels to put there and then do that. Could be too tedious to do and cutting may be better.

@chris- you dont want the roof, the reason why I am thinking about this ie because of the roof. Sure in the short term (a few years) it would be fine, but I dont want to invest fixing the sages and hole from the AC for something that I will have to redo. waste of time and money IMO

@ige- YES thats the pic!! I didn't know that was a chop, the did very good. I guess not having a cage should have been a sign :) Did fjben do this? Put an exoskeleton on there an a top similar to a softopper/canback and be set. I like this option a lot

@mark- I do appreciate the offer. If I decide to go that route I will let you know. I think that most shops would rather have it cut midway between the pillars, but the top might be doable too to circumvent the door problem.

The wife drove it today to pick up my dog who was neutered. While driving, it suddenly started leaking/steaming terribly. Scared the crap out of her. I went to get her and trailered the pig home. The culprit is the rear heater, I am guessing the the hoses under the dash burst as thats where the water/coolant was coming from. Looks like I need to get some new rubber hoses.

Davegonz found this pig for sale. This is almost exactly what I envision. I would extend the bikini top and make it a full soft top, removing the 3rd row windows. ANd try to keep the D-pillars so the window still function. Thoughts? thanks dave!

Jason,

Don't buy that Pig, in the event you or anyone else is considering, before having it inspected.

I've seen it has the typical port installed rust, filler, wiring debacle, and isn't worth the $8k they were asking two years ago when I went and checked it out on the lot.

Cool concept though. That's similar to what I envision my next, wheeling Pig to look like, but bobbed.

let me clarify Chris, I am NOT buying that. I actually dont care for that pig for some reason.

Given the state of my roof, I have pretty-well convinced myself that cutting off the top and putting in a cage is the path I am going down. The above pics were for reference only as this is the closest one that I have seen that shows the full cage.
