I have 8 or so of the NATO cans, bought them used from Dirk at Unimog Wherehaus 6 years ago, $5 each, never leak no matter which way I stored them.

Now for the crazy purist types, there is another option :D

Blitz cans have the bottom crimped on, and a screw on nozzle.

The Nato' ones are 2 stamped halves that are welded together with a clamp on nozzle.

The Nato style cans leak too but not as bad as the blitz cans.
also, when stored on a solid floor (not hanging), the blitz cans can form condensation on the bottom, rusting from the bottom up.

BLitz do suck, last time and only time i used one i reaked like gas the rest of the night due to leaking

I bought a pair of Army surplus, ABS plastic jerry-style cans a few years ago from a local surplus store. They rock, obviously will never rust, don't leak, and you can thread a standard jerry can nozzle onto them. Very stout.

I think they are being reproduced, but can't find them at the moment with web searches. Wish I would have bought all 4.

Sister found one at garage sale and gave it to me - FREE
Coworker cleaned out "junk" was gonna trash one - FREE

Both say USMC on the bottom.

Sportsman's guide has used swiss nato cans for $13 bucks, and new isreali nato cans for 14 ech, and they have fast and reasonable shipping. I just bought two of the israeli ones, and I have a swiss can too, that has a spiffy fuel-type identifier card is a cool gaget.

The fillers are a little sucky., though.

It's illegal in MT to put gas in any container that is not red.(except a car) I am surprised that it is allowed in CA.

Rest assured that the People's Republik of California will not come in second place when it comes to regulating even the smallest detail of human existence.

Not only is it illegal to put gas into a can that it not red; you cannot sell a gas can that is not red and the cans have to have a special non-drip nozzle that works by dispensing gas one drop at a time.

Jeez, I even need to have an attorney to explain my fishing license to me.

It's a little funny that we have that rule here. Not that anyone would really ticket us for it. We don't ever have inspections and the only rules are mud flaps and headlight height. Also there has to be "a front bumper" (no specifications), and at least 50% of the tire width must be covered by the the fenders. Thats about it :D Infact one of my wheeling buddies drives a ford on 52" Michelins and full hydro steering on the steet. But only red gas cans :flipoff2:

Hmmm, not that Kalifohnia isn't restrictive in a zillion other ways, but I thought that red gas cans was a fedral DOT standard, part of the "be kind to your emergency responder" act. It's that, or they could stand off from your accident while they determine whether that black jerrycan is dripping water or gasoline . . . but I guess they probablby stand off anyway, cuz of all these libertairian cruzerheads that are using non-DOT compliant cans. . . . (like mine) ;-)

But seriously, the highway patrol or state police could give you a ticket if they wanted to make trouble for you, and many states have big time penalties if someone gets injured from you not marking hazmat correctly. There must be some firefighters on the list that would know.

Old thread but did my duty and SEARCHED for an answer before posting a question about jerry cans. Saw the "Nato" style jerry can on clearance sale at CCOT (yeah I know ;p ) for $49 each (since sold out). Thought to myself...."Self, check around...They're probably cheaper elsewhere"

Anyway, so I do some digging and searching and I think I've found them for the cheapest at Expedition Exchange. Seems they, and Generator Joe, are about the only two (no, I didn't go through 20 pages of google searching) still selling the better version of the jerry can with the locking pin in the cap etc. Anyway, here is some current pricing for the 20L (5.2x gal) size:
  • Generator Joe:
    • $40 per can, $17 for the spout = $57 total
    • Buy 4 and you can get them for $200 total ($50 ea)
    • Shipping additional obviously
  • Expedition Exchange:
    • $40 per can, $10 for the spout = $50 total
    • Buy 4 and you can get them for $140 not including spouts...4 spouts would run another $40
    • Shipping additional obviously
I didn't find these anywhere else mentioned above (Checker, Walmart, PepBoys, etc.) that would be local to avoid shipping. Army Surplus carries similar style but not in red. Cheaper but you would have to mess with the painting...

So, for ME I'm going with EE. I don't need a spout for each gas can. 1 should be just fine. And even if I did it would still be $20 cheaper going through EE. AND, with EE you can mix and match if you use their "Buy 4" deal. I'm picking up 3 gas and 1 water with 2 spouts for $160 plus shipping. I am concerned that EE won't quote shipping costs up front (Generator Joe will). Reminds me an AWFUL lot of the SOR phantom shipping charges...Anyone have experience with EE and shipping?

Saw that...WAY more than I want to pay to haul gas around and then to boot I'd have to ruin it by painting it RED

As it is the "NATO" cans aren't cheap but worth it if they don't leak all over you, your Cruiser, and the ground....

As far as I can tell EE carries the same exact cans that CCOT had for sale that are now 'discontinued'. The only difference is that they are less expensive through EE, especially if you order 4 at a time!! EE carries the CARB compliant 'plastic' ones as well as the metal ones that I purchased plus other smaller sizes. Actually a pretty good selection for a bunch of Land Rover guys ;p

I bought several years ago, I think I paid 36 for it. I wish i would of bought from EE. I'm sure they were much cheaper during the same time frame. I like mine I've had inside on the passenger side and evertime I have used It has never leaked. When my budget allows it I would like to get another one.

See if you can get a "group buy" going with some local folks...$140 for 4 cans (whether gas, water, diesel, or combination) plus shipping and they should be around what you paid years ago. Throw $10 in for each spout needed...I didn't need 4 but figured the deal was worth it.

Of course I have yet to see what the shipping charges will be...

EDIT: Just got a call from EE that they are out of stock on the gas cans. Surprised that they actually called rather than sending an email etc. Anyway, they have spouts but NO gas cans. They have water cans but NO water spouts. I'm not in a big hurry so no biggy but the guy (John) said it might be awhile...Last time it took them a YEAR to get more in. Seems that with Katrina and the military etc. these are very popular/hard to get. So, if you're in a hurry to get them you may want to try Generator Joe.
