I'll second ESH's opinion on the military's polyethelene cans. They are awesome, I only have one, they aren't cheap, getting hard to find, and I wish I had more.
I think they are made by a Canadian company called "Scepter". These things are heavy duty, quiet, and if you get the right scew on spout, pour fast, and don't leak a drop!(don't know about how they woek with the old style screw on nozzles-but they should fit)
I found my can under a crashed airplane(somewhere where I shouldn't have been), but Specter, I mean $pecter Offroad carries them. I bought my pour spout there for $17.00 or so. The cans were listed at over $50.00...

Your right I was looking at these Thy are nice at the local surplus are like $24.00 to $28.00 used for gas & water I would replace the NATO can with em, when I need to.......Dusty

Hey dusty, you didn't give those to Friends did you. if so do they still talk to you?

I can vouch for the newer military plastic cans. They are awesome, don't leak, won't crack even when it is freaking freezing outside and are really tough as nails. As far as the desert heat that some are worried about I can asure you that thousands of these type cans are currently in use in Iwaq with no issues. The vent is built into the screw on cap and will never leak no matter what position the can is in. Great product even if they cost a bit brand new. Getting them from surplus stores might be the way to attack the search.

Thanks I like to see, where did you buy the can mounts ?

I have fond Surplus Scepter USED to DEATH for $25.00

A little research I found It is recommended to change the gaskets on the Diesel O.D. green and field brown Fuel can's From diesel to a Gas gaskets to ensure the Fuel can's from leaking I fond new @ $22.00 plus the price of the gaskets don't know how much right now

Or buy new Civilian Red Scepter gas cans @ $35.00

I was hope to have some our GI with real world experance to jump in here too.......Dusty

I once found that I had left my scepter can half filled in the back of the truck at about 105 degrees...It was bulging pretty good. I let out some pressure...no problems or leaks 2 years later. I think it might not have bulged as much if it was full- too much empty space for vapor to expand?

well I did 13 years in desert units(3rd acr)thats where i found the cans,my national gaurd unit ordered neww cans and we got plastic ones, they did not want them threw them out so i got them 2 5gal cans , world tested gi approved

I started to read this thread this morning at work (Mondays are SLOW). and beleive it or not a buddy looks over my shoulder and see the title and says " Hey I got two of those in the back uf my truck,You want them?" NO LIE!!
So having NO need for them I say HELL YES I want them.
they are the RED type with a Big X on the side an US stamped on them. bottom reads
DOT- 5L
USMC
02-05-78 and 02-05-79 on the second one one has some light surface rust, the other is in nice shape. I figure I may sand em down and repaint or just post em up to get a few bucks for the cruiser fund.

Briggs cans

So I visited the local Farm to see if they still had the metal cans. Can anyone recognize who makes these? Labeled by Briggs & Stratton and manufactured under license by The Plastics Group Inc. All metal construction. Price is in the picture.
