@RUSH55 thank you for narrowing down what’s going to make the biggest improvement with my steering. I have a tentative date next week to use my buddies shop to adjust the valves on Marge. I’ll use that time to measure my caster and order the appropriate shims.

I’ll post up the numbers I find and get the brain trusts opinion on the size shims I should order.

@J Mack just read your post from 2016 about cut and turn. That seems like the best option once I get Marge to the finish line. I think I’m going with CR 16 inch wheels this summer and I’m due for new tires so after I get all of that finished up and I’m pretty sure I’m not going to monkey with the setup anymore I’ll really start exploring that option. Thank you for the input.

Also forgot to add I’m seriously thinking about CR electric power steering system. From what I’m reading the electric power steering might effect the numbers I’m looking for as well.

I have the same company electric ps on our BJ45 and it’s pretty darn nice. I did buy a kit for my 40 from CR. It’s significant investment for sure but after being told by West Texas off-road they no longer rebuild the mini truck PS boxes it definitely makes ya think of other options.

The kit performs very well

Funny you mention those shackles @RUSH55. I’m thinking they might go soon. Marge still drives like sh#+ after I had the box rebuilt by Mark and systematically replaced every steering component with OEM equipment from the tires all the way to the steering wheel. I get some scary road wander when I hit potholes etc. I also measured and adjusted for toe in using the TMR guides that I purchased after seeing warnog use them in one of his threads. Great product and super easy to use.

The only thing I haven't done is shackles and associated rubber, shocks, and/or looked into shims to put under the springs to correct driveline angle which I have read can be an huge help in correcting steering wander. Maybe if I knock those 3 things out it’ll make all the difference 🤷🏼‍♂️

I’m already 2 summers behind dialing Marge in for reliable summer fun so the push is on!
I thought the shackles looked a little vertical to me, but I am just an armchair quarterback/weekend warrior.

Have you had the caster angle checked by an alignment shop? A s***ty caster angle can really be no fun at all...

I am looking forward to hearing what you learn!

Eek!
Why do they no longer rebuild?

Don’t know, email simply said they don’t rebuild them anymore.

I called place in El Monte, CA I believe was called “master steering” friday which got some good reviews from a mud member a few weeks ago. Guy super nice and said they could help and to send it their way.

Our local steering rebuilder has retired, Randy knew what the 60 box was at first glance and also that it was too far gone to rebuild…but took it apart in front of me to show me why, you just don’t find that now a days. Old school dudes are the real deal.

How many degrees' do you recommend of caster wedge he use before considering a cut and turn?
Good question.
I think it depends on how bad the caster is before correcting.
Four degrees seems reasonable, but if you need more it seems like you are going to point the flange down at the ground.
Just an opinion.

Four degrees seems reasonable,
Several of us are running 6 degrees or more that drive at highway speeds and I'd think he's minus 2 or more with those long shackles...
Going to be hard to take baby steps all the way there.
I spent a lot of time and money learning this the hard way!

You are running shims?
I thought you went cut-n-turn?
