ok im still learning how to attach these pictures. the trans pic above shows the home made flat bar lever that has been coupled to the 2x4 mechanism when the vacuum system failed. this operates inside the transfer but doesn.t feel to actually engage anything.

today i blocked the oil line exiting the oil regulator and gave the motor a tiring 100 plus revolutions with the crank handle but unfortunately still to no effect regards oil to the rocker. does anyone thik i should try start the motor like this? anyway this was disappointing so eventually i resealed the motor up and invited my mate out for a late afternoon beer; with a "bring your pressure washer" post script attached. seems we have to look inside the side covers next.

did this gearshift instruction plate vary over the years in the USA? in aust. i reckon we only got column shift in 61/62 and theron stick shift only from onset of the next generation of the box. anyway the point is these plates don't exist in australia so does anyone in the USA have one laying around they want to post over to me? it need not be mint; just readable for my passenger because no-one ever gets to go for a drive in a column shift landcruiser in aust

.
i'll send you a stubby holder and put your name in the credits or something??

your p.o. and my 45s p.o. must've been one on the same ;)

Hey mate, nice rig, last time i started an early f engine I didnt get oil to the rockers for 3 or 4 minutes. It had been sitting for almost 20 years. Was getting worried and then the oil started pumping. I had the valve cover off and was pouring oil on the rockers. Been running great ever since. Had another f run for 15 minutes with no oil presure before it siezed!! These are tough engines! Cheers!

i've owned and driven many column shift vehicles over the years and i just guess whatever you grow up with comes naturally. drove an old beat up pontiac wagon the length and breadth of USA in 2000 also but forget now if that was column or floor auto. but no-one, not even cruiserheads, get to drive a column shift in aust. because there are so few off them.

nuclearlemon the similarity of that shift lever is startling haha! and thanks for the link to the glovebox plate. they are listed as out of stock at the moment. however if they ran the same plate for a decade someone must have a surplus one laying about.

mate dropped off his waterspit for me last night so got a date with that today

Same thing with Annie...I also was getting worried so I pulled the oil pump and checked gears and even contacted Jim c who gave me the great quote in my sig

i love that sig quote nuclearlemon. guess i am just being extra cautious; especially as i am convinced that this late 60 build engine is the one she left toyota with. i'm wondering how long they ran the 25 style harmonic, like this one has, (just a pulley really) for? most old cruisers i find locally have had numerous engine shuffles over the years. and i'm disappointed my block the filter method didn't provide more startling results.

anyway the couple hours i just spent on the waterspit was surprisingly enjoyable. i'v never played with a 40 before so i'm liking this old girl more and more with every day. project shorty forty now sports a state of somewhat cleanliness. there is a lot more crud to get out of the chassis rails yet but that can wait until i have the box and shafts out, brakes apart, cooling system passenger seat and battery tray removed and the remaining hulk sitting up on tall axle stands. and more cleaning to be done through whats left of the floor and cab mounts. the plan is to save whatever structure is left and leave it as clean, dry and airy as possible more use as a pattern in the future. i think shorty is rare, desirable and straight enough that someone will attempt a better restoration one day; but i might leave that for another generation myself. in the meantime i aim to tinker, preserve and locate what missing components i can; and have fun with it.

i don't have much more time to play in the near future. would have been nice to have had the oil issue sorted by now but at least she is rollable and clean enough to work on. and she doesn't have to live in a shed until i get the seats and gauge cluster sorted.

do we agree that trans cover is same as a 45? so any trans cover from a pre 65 fj45 should fit? i don't have one loose to mock up.

a couple of clean pics.

we filled the engine by pouring the fresh oil over the valve train and cranked it with the starter and got it running for about a minute and no oil...that's when i was panicking. the second time we ran it, it still took a good minute or two before oil was leaking out. easy to panic when you don't see that right away.

had no time at all to play. did sneak a look at how the oil line attaches to the cam on an old junk motor laying out the back. just thought i'd show a couple pics of this old rusty toolbox bolted under the rear floor. it has a sliding door accessed from the rear.

i guess it is early po though b&d motors did lots of different things to the fj25 bodies they built. the b&d come thiess takeover in aus. is interesting anyway; i commented about this in the thiess thread somewhere once.

got a couple moments tonight in the fading light. pulled the side cover and undid the top end oil feed. can blow through it easily and there doesnt seem any damage to the line so i guess next step is restart the motor and see what we get

had another very quick play tonight. started the motor and got a drool of oil where the rocker oil feed is from the camshaft so i am confident the cam is getting some oil at least. installed the line and got the slightest bit of oil through the line. in better light there was a fair amount of sludge in the pushrod gallery. think my next step is an oil change back to correct weight oil and incorporate an oil filter into the system. perhaps pull the sump if im feeling keen. be nice to run the motor up warm first. the cooling system is a shambles of course, but the waterpump is free so hoping that a better top hose and a belt of some sort may suffice for my immediate needs. to this end i sprayed more lube onto the hose clamps, generator mount and etc and left things to soak.

Adding a quart/liter of ATF and let it run for a while will help loosen up the sludge. I would recommend adding a filter for sure. The problem with the pre 74 F engine is only part of the oil go thru the filter. Anything washed down into the sump and picked up by the oil pump can try and make it's way thru the bearings. Hopefully the screen is still in good shape. I would go thru many oil changes after running the engine on lower RPM and no load.
