I am astonished and in awe of the effort going into this. May I ask, will it be titled as an 80? Diesel has been mentioned in this thread. Are you thinking of a 1HZ?

It will indeed be titled as an 80. I have to check the title, but I believe it is a 1994.

The powertrain will be diesel. I am prepping a 1HDFT to go in. If for some reason that motor requires a complete rebuild, and takes too long, I will drop in a turbo’d 1HZ.

Made it back in just enough time to scoop the new h151 from Fastenal.

@c2dfj45 ’s hood strut kit, AKA kitty launcher. This will be the first thing to go on once I have the body figured out.

Looking underneath the cab, I see that it has the mounts for the main tank. Or is that the sub tank? I can’t tell which is which from the parts diagrams. Regardless, it’s time to study @c2dfj45 ’s build and see if I can squeeze that tank in there, since I do have dual filler necks on this truck.

Even more excitingly, my wife moved her horse trailer away from the side of the barn. Now I have a fighting chance of being able to get the pickup into the barn, which will help with lifting the body off and shucking the motor in and out.

I would think the main tank is the one under the body......not all 79s have the sub tank I think(seems like I spent some time looking for something related to a non-sub tank pickup). Fun fact....the 4 door pickups only have one tank and its the rear tank. you'll need the straps and pins and the clips for the pins and the strap bolts and a tank and a filler neck and a cap and vent lines and a sender....it never ends.

Sub tank is in rear. Some of

One good thing is the 80 series parking brake with bolt right in. Since your frame is extended you will need to extend the cable. Probably easier than adapting a 70 series parking brake.

On my son's 80 UTE I searched all over and finally found a company that took a stock cable and extended it for us. (we stretched the frame 9")

70 e-brake handle is cheap and will come in grey or brown(make sure you get the 'cup' under the lever), get a lc79 cable, get the bracket that mounts the cable to the body(at the rear of the tub), you'll need the other support to mount it on the crossmember you don't have.....yet......then get the pins and clips for the brake to mount to the levers at the rear wheels. You'll have to extend the right hand cable 5" or so which is easy. You can use the mount for the pivot and the guide for the cable that are on the 80s axle.

The 70 series brake cable has the correct provisions for the mounts on it along with some heat shielding. The 80 series won't have the stuff in the right place.

I think you could probably very carefully cut the crimped on ferule on the end of the right side of the 80s cable off....use that section on the 70 series cable. Then you won't have to stretch it 5". You can buy crimp on ferules at Grainger for the size of the cable( it might be 1/8"...can't recall). Clean way to do it. Or have that company mentioned above install a longer right side.

I am trying to think why you would not just use an 80 cable, so the cable is the right wheel to wheel diminsions, then have Control Cable add the cable and housing needed to go to the 70 handbrake?

For my build, I didn't have an 80 cable. And the 70 series one I got was a mine take-off.....it was cheap...kind of a no brainer. No need to send it somewhere to be modded when we can make a quick little bracket in house. Plus, as I said, it mounted up with the sleeves for where the 79 clamps go. The one I used on my first 79 was an 80 one and I never liked it. I personally like having new...not a 20+ year old 80 piece. Not that it's a huge wear item but I prefer new if it makes sense financially and in my case it did. My .02 cents.

Well, I already bought a new 79 handbrake with brackets and a mine takeoff 79 cable...I plan to go down the @c2dfj45 road and make an extension bracket.

Gotta love the mine takeoff stuff! So much of it. Amazing what they don't use.

What seats are you running in yours?

@c2dfj45 : new 60/40 bench from Joe.

also, got out to the barn today with @davegonz and @Spallet.

We got all fancy and changed the oil in Dave’s sweet 1HZ turbo 60 UP IN THE AIR. It’s only the second time I’ve used that lift.

Then we were able to get the FT up in an engine stand.

Time to go through the FT and see what shape it’s in.

Like most of the big equipment in that barn, it’s borrowed...

Well lucky for you you get to borrow one!
