they're different lengths, but when did that change?

found that out when i went to put a sexy powdercoated setup that i got from cppilot that was out of a 1965 fj45. the battery tray is almost an inch shorter than the tray from my 1962 fj40.

first two measurements are inside edge to inside edge (and yes, annies are a bit splayed but you can still see a difference). second measurements are extra verification, they are just the bent up lip

and no, i'm not selling the tray, i'll put it in my 1965 fj45 since i have an overkill battery in annie ;)

Want specs on a stock 1970 or is that too late?

OK, let's...but I do not know exactly when the change was...

I checked my '61 40, it has the 10 1/2" tray with 8 1/4" bolt pattern to mount it to the bracket that mates it to the frame. Originality is questionable as it is mounted to the frame with late model "cupped head" JIS fasteners and it's a former V-8 conversion with a sordid past...
My '62 40 has the longer 11 1/2" tray with the 9 1/2" bolt pattern to the bracket, and I would believe it is original by the way it is fastened.
(Note: Both brackets have holes drilled for the glass fuel filter bracket)

A quick check of the FJ25 and 1960-63 FJ40 (pre part number change) parts manuals indicate that the 25 and E40 share the same part number for the battery hold-down bracket: "plate, battery set, FJ24 51361". The 25 gets a "Bracket complete, FJ24 51306" battery tray. The E40, 43, and 45 get a "Bracket complete, battery FJ40 51306". Kinda close. One of my 25s has an intact battery tray remaining, it measures 11 1/2", bolt mounting holes to the under seat brackets measure 9 1/2". The '62 40 tray has the same 9 1/2" bolt pattern to its bracket.

So, the 25 and (at least) the E40s share the same battery hold down bracket, and probably battery tray. The tray to frame brackets are just different. Thanks Ige! I just found a battery tray for a 25 in need!

Stock 1970 tray with the ends folded down to accommodate the big boy. The folded ends butt right up to that piece of angle. Now mounted under the tray [bed].

From my books:

1960 FJ25: 74401-69020 (FJ24-51306)
1961: FJ40-51365
1963: 74431-60010 (FJ40-51365A)
1964: 74431-60010
1965: 74431-60010
1967: 74431-60010
1969: 74431-60010

I'd say that 1962 was the last year for the small tray as my original trays were also the small type on all three of my 1962's. From 1963-1969 they appear to have been the larger version and then I think they changed to the newer style after that. My 1964 LV doesn't have a battery tray on it, but it does have the original bracket that supported the large early trays.

Should have checked my 68 last weekend. I bend down the ends over thirty years ago to install a bigger battery. The FJ25 would be different just because the what the battery box bolted down. Off the frame under the left seat it had two brackets which were at the ends. FJ40 were under the hood with a bracket under a large section battery box. My time up north where I have all my keepers is becoming for often. Have a 65 FJ45, 68 FJ40 and 70 FJ40 I could measure. I also have 61 FJ40 and 62 production 63 FJ40 here in town. Would have to check 63 because it was modified for dual battery. Not sure if the battery box was removed or not. Only bought the cruiser because of almost perfect floor.

would be interested to know, esp since the small tray supposedly came out of a 65 fj45, which would be against splangys listings, but i can't see the fj45 coming with a different tray than the fj40. my big tray came out of annie, but 62 was a transition year as i have the single sided turn signals and later model front bumper. besides, we know how completely un strict toyoda was with the parts..use them until they run out must apply in most cases ;)

I'll add a little to this oldish thread. My early (I'm guessing pre-April) '63 FJ45 has a tray bracket that needs a tray bigger than the current available tray. I have no idea if the bracket is original, it's bolted to the frame with rusty looking bolts and has the fuel filter bracket. I'm now even more confused as to what's suppose to be in this rig, big or small tray. Seems though that if the current available battery tray has a smaller hole pattern compared to the bracket I have then the bracket is for earlier rigs, and therefore earlier rigs have the bigger trays. I really don't care, as long as it holds a battery and looks proper. So...

I have a brand new small tray for trade for a used large tray (cuz I know large trays ain't "still available from Toyota") if anyone is looking for a small battery tray. Or I guess I'm also open to trade a used large battery tray bracket that's in good shape - has the bracket for the fuel filter - for a used small battery tray bracket - in good shape and has the bracket for the fuel filter.

Bringing this thread back because I have a battery tray conundrum. I have a mid to late-64 build FJ40, and just about everything (except the radiator) is original and not messed with. I’m restoring it right now and disassembling everything.

In the process, I noticed that my battery tray has the threaded rod at the front and rear, but I can’t seem to unearth photos of any other cruisers with this setup. Is this factory? Note the pads below the tray when I removed it!

In my build thread for Miss Kitty March 2nd I posted about a source for a substitute for the unobtanium frame around the top.

The Micky Mouse wing nuts are grand things. Get them if you have the opportunity.

Does anyone have a good picture of the large wing nuts that go with the 62 and earlier battery trays? I am guessing they are rare as hens teeth?

I double checked. Left one is same as middle one, but threaded section is a little taller ( 1/16"), wings are the same, both the same as the 1965 45 one from earlier. Middle one is from a 1960 FJ25, right one I think is a air cleaner wing nut.
