KISS Drawers (Keep It Simple Storage) For 100 Series

Looks like you can't order anything at the website at the moment. Not even the Chum buckets or the Remora. Here's the message you get:
The new drawer system is in prototyping and just a few weeks from being announced, so to avoid anyone ordering and then wishing they had waited I am pausing any new orders until the announcement. Subscribe to the newsletter to be the first to hear!

I'M ALIVE (in my best zombie voice) ;)

Sending out a newsletter tonight (threads are for truck stuff not business marketing) with lots of updates - so sorry for the radio silence but it'll all be worth it, I promise!

Now the question is how long has that message been there? Like when you go to a gas station and it says back in 15 you never know if they just left, or are about back.

It has been about a year since I installed my KISS drawers and I think its one of the best additions to my setup! Our longest trip was 23 days and we slept inside for 18 nights. And of course several weekenders.

KISS Hotel, note the tents dont have to come out when the mattress is setup:

This didn't copy perfectly, but it is the email that was sent on Saturday. Most importantly, read the final two statements at the bottom of this copied email. The PS and the PPS

To those who have been waiting patiently, a huge THANK YOU!
And to those just joining, welcome!

Rewind 6 months ago and Land Shark Outfitters was a small operation in an even smaller space. We ran everything out of a paltry 50 ft2 in my garage:
WDZR8kZQGBG2eIXA-VzJdbYkdl0W1AmzmSNIsOUWarP3cWAGBzLbffhehltou7zE9CIEUJP46WbZ-uRKGs6xJsbHl9wuEFfuw9fXDslPWvxfXBZ7nMU1Qhw0E6WuoLa0OftT07nSb9OlTLhi1K8ydqlJQUNaCaVIQIo=s0-d-e1-ft

Needless to say this created enormous stress and miserable inefficiencies. Stocking, building, and shipping products was a matter of move things to one place to make room for doing something, then move back to do something else. I was shipping 30+ SKUs, and the drawers alone had around 100 different pieces of plywood to manage.

Then came The Move.

Everything changed - we bought a new house which had a dedicated shop, and I knew that once the dust settled I would finally have the space to Do Things Differently.

After maximizing the meager space in our home by organizing every nook and cranny for 15 years, however, meant there was a LOT of stuff to move.
SdTkGGEOguDruXVdzGX0ZH1T9bm2SuKrfPtJ2wVRdQLtVxmWjnnsV94ZHmRluyZHGEP715zOWXUfGXa-SdX77lPuEj7dkofO76-yaGTXevENiZFXb_ag7QRtZSt8oMfK1iFVRrrMjVJc-hs5vlhPxuMaD7kHXLw1buU=s0-d-e1-ft

And when it landed at the new home it was chaos because of course, nothing had it's place anymore. The hopeful 1 month move turned into 3... and of course we're still half in boxes and I have a project list literally 2 years long, but I can finally walk through my shop in almost a straight line. And we can assemble 4 sets of drawers at a time. Land Shark Outfitters has around 400 ft2 all to itself, with more available if I need it. Sheer bliss...

The Ocean of Stress Recedes At Last
So here I am, for the first time in a couple years I can stop treading water to keep from drowning. Instead, I can sit on the beach and stare at the waves. And scheme. And sketch. And design. And plan.

It's time for a fresh start, but this time I am going to build products and the business so that I can keep my head above water as it ramps. And when you see what's coming, you'll understand why managing growth is my number two priority in everything here.

What's number one? Kickass awesome products of course!

What's Next
And now we get to the good stuff, the reason you signed up for these emails, to learn what the heck IS coming, am I going to EVER get Chum Buckets back in stock, and what the HECK am I all excited about?

Okay, a couple easy ones first.

SharkNet, the toughest, FJ40-est, retro-coolest grill for the 100 series Land Cruiser is back. With new emblems up front to spice things up. And even better, all of you waiting for the other model years, and even the 80 crew: I have found a way to design new grills in 1/10th the time the first one took me.

$h!t Slinger. The only shovel you can change the scoops out for snow, for mud, for opening 12 beer bottles at once. Ready to go to manufacturing.

Shark Attack Kit. A trauma kit designed by a veteran ER nurse, overlander and mother of two. Not a fancy box full of bandaids, you open it by removing the tourniquet. Ready to go to manufacturing.

Chum Buckets, the practical, sturdy, Made-In-America canvas bags that everyone has been banging on my inbox about stocking again, are coming back. Sort of.

These bags started out as a fun 'whatever' - I wanted some and maybe folks would too so what the heck. But I just got too many orders and the margins are too thin (or the price has to go annoyingly high) so I need to control how much of my life they consume. Since they were made specifically for KISS Drawers it's a natural fit to say that going forward only past and present drawer customers will be able to buy them.

I can hear it now: "buuuuttt Daaavvvvvvve... you don't MAKE drawers for my truck so what am I supposed to do?!??"

Funny you should bring that up....

The KISS Drawers mkIII
"Basecamp"

These babies deserve an entire newsletter dedicated to them, which is exactly what I'm going to do in a few weeks. In the meantime, know that I took every pain point that I or my customers experienced, and designed them out. I made decisions that some will hate, some will love, and some will just plain flip over. To give you a taste of what is to come:
  • Modular: One. Two. Two tall. Wings. Build as your budget allows.
  • Truly universal: 60 series, Troopies, Forerunners, GXs, Sequoias, Defenders, Subarus, have a KISS and welcome to the family
  • Accessories & personally vetted customization materials
  • Only sold from stock: no more waiting
  • Starting price: <$300
I think you'll agree, my "time away" has been productive ;)

Happy trails everyone,
Cruzer Dave

PS - the store will remain closed until the launch of Basecamp, where it will have migrated to a new e-commerce platform. I'm going to try and have a product configurator for you to play with...

PPS- please don't email or gram me asking questions about any of the above, if I spend time typing I'm not spending time in the shop testing and tweaking!

Nicely done finish & install. If available could you share the paint tint codes ? this is Behr floor paint ?
TIA

Thanks, it never occurred to me that I should save the paint code, but it should be pretty easy to replicate. I took one of the trim pieces (I think from the 3rd floor seat mount covers) in to HD for paint matching. I used Behr interior/exterior porch and patio paint in Gloss finish, in hindsight maybe Eggshell or Flat finish is better.

Appreciate your reply. I'm still debating between paint and U-Pol tinted raptor liner . Paint has moved up a notch after looking at your work . If I don't like the painted surface it will be a nice surface prep for u-Pol
thanks

I can't wait. I have a new, to me, 200 Series waiting for drawers. I wonder if the ARB 1/2 cargo barrier can be fitted to these drawers.

I had a Milford cargo barrier in my FJ60 and it was great for mounting radios and speakers.

Put me down for a sharknet! interested in the drawer options as well.

I went to Lowe's to buy some indoor/outdoor carpet to cover my newly installed drawers. They were out of the color I was looking for, and while looking around I found a pre-cut EcoRug in a color that was pretty close to what I wanted. The size was 6' x 8' and the cost was only $22. The color matched my interior and it was easy to work with. It's thicker than PolyMat, but not as stiff as carpet. I'm still finishing these out, but here's the day after picture:

Finally got the drawer pulls installed. Used door pulls out of a Porsche 911 RS. Very happy with how they look and how they open the drawers.

I think my next step is raising the platform just a bit so I can have a fully plywood sleeping platform which hinges out. I plan on using some more 80/20 which extends out and has legs, so I can have a sleeping platform with or without second row seats. I can then prolly stow a camp table and a kitchen counter in the new space above the drawers...more to follow.

My search skills are not finding the door pull with cover plate . Any links for sources?
TIA

My install. I used Behr deck stain per the Home Depot expert reco, and it worked great. I covered with
Rubber-Cal Diamond Plate Metallic PVC Flooring from Amazon. Decided not to glue it down in case I wanted to take it all apart someday. I only screwed it down with the 3/4" aluminum angle bar on the front. Figured the aluminum was important to protect the front edge. Also put the rubber inside the drawers to protect the wood and dampen rattles. Everything works great!

In all, more than a 2 beer project, but not hard. Dave has done a great job with directions and the "drawer tool" is ingenious!

Just checked your site for the shark net?

Hey, I'm working on building a drawer set very similar to the KISS design from scratch, all plywood construction, same dimensions. Can you tell me how the top assembles to the frame? I don't think I'll be able to assemble a one piece top (58" wide) and slide it into the cruiser. It's hard to tell from all the pics if the KISS top is one 58" piece (or does it have wings that attach afterwards). Do you have to set frame in the truck, then screw down the top? If so, did you carpet the whole thing first, then screw down thru carpet? I'd like to have the wings fixed, but also have the top be one full sheet of ply. Is your system a semi-permanent install? Thanks for any ideas you may have. Your build looks great!

Make the box that fits in between your wheel well, then add wings to the side on top afterwards using some L brackets and piano hinges. Cover the entire thing with carpet and it'll look like a 1 piece thing.

For the record it's a lot of work, if Dave would stock these i'd bought one already, just was in a crunch for time for my trip. For those building your own, i used scrap woods i found lying around and it still cost over $200 in materials, if you bought good birch wood at home depot, along with supplies, the time you take while doing it, it's much better deal just to buy the KISS set.
