My tech and I were discussing the retrofit of the entire airbag system since I will be getting the entire interior from the donor truck....but it just doesn't seem like something I want to deal with. My primary reason for upgrading to the new dash is that I will be able to source the full harness, all the AC stuff and of course the dash parts...I'm trying to not have as much labor in this build. Truck is a roller, full dash with harness, diesel motor from a running truck...just hoping it comes together easier.

I have an old style dash in my parts stash that I was perfectly content to use(in all honesty....I really like the old dash...it fits that truck in my opinion....the new dash is a little to RAV4 for me). I had all my gauges laid out for the old one(EGT/boost)...and now that's all going out the window. Glutton for punishment.

Going to also try to retrofit power windows on it. That seems to be a challenge trying to figure out how to find a 2 door LC79 LHD power window control for the doors. The donor truck is a 76...so more window switches than I need.

My trucks are Middle East spec.

Oh yeah....the front windshield on new dash trucks is different than old dash trucks!

Power window controls are ready available as long as you are staying 12v

I completely agree, that can turn south really quick and make the job quite a bit more involved. So you have everything complete except a cab? and then you will put an older style cab on that chassis?

I have been bouncing the idea around about doing a face lift on mine, and using a Canada mine truck for the main guts, because I feel like unless you are in the middle east, all those vehicle parts are off limits haha. not much info on it. But I dont know how far i want to go to update it. I can essentially bolt on the exterieor, leave the interior and RHD and be done, or i can step it up and try swap fire walls and all dash there by making it LHD and new inside. But thats quite a bit more cost and time.

I love the 76 4 door wagons with the new front so thats my main goal, but a half cut would give me what I needed to make it coil, LHD, and all new depending on how deep i want to go down that hole! the other thing I have to think about is 24v to 12v. at some point it may be cheaper to just find a LHD body with inteiror and give it a new chassis here in the US!

Cool. I'm starting my due diligence on the power windows......I was hoping that the dash donor truck's front door panels can be used...just convert to a 2 window switch vs. the 4 that it will come with. Seems easy enough....... which is what always gets me into trouble.

I have a cab/bed on a rolling chassis(80 series). Same setup that my first truck has. The new one will differ with the motor and interior and the way it will be outfitted in the bed.

Sounds like you're going to have quite the project!

I was going to do a new build thread for this second 79/80 hybrid we're doing but I figured that may take us a while to get to since it's a build for me.....or "inventory" which sounds better. I'll start that thread once we get going on it.

Over the last few months we've made some pretty significant changes to my current 79/80....totally changed it. All of this is really intended for the new build....but what fun would it be to not test it all out.

Whoever posted this pic somewhere on this site.....thank you....you cost me a good chunk of money!

Carry on and report back......me want......:)

I had contacted the US distributor for AluCab regarding a canopy/tent/awning but it was hugely expensive....and I'm not quite sure they believed I had a 79. Ha. I considered a hard shell tent mounted on a custom rack type system but I wanted more secure storage. The aluminum canopies were intriguing. I really liked the setup of the truck in the pics I found on Mud and kept going back to that. My detective skills led me to Big Country 4x4 out of South Africa(could just read the sticker on the door of the truck in the pics above). I sent them an email and a day later, I had a reply. In our many emails, I realized that they had all the stuff I wanted and more which was great(great for them, bad for my account balance). Fortunately for me, the USD to ZAR exchange rate was pretty favorable....so it was almost like I was saving money by spending money. Ha.

After about 2 months of pouring thru their site, they pictures they would send and torture me with and asking me asking somewhere in the neighborhood of about 1.8 million questions, I had settled on what I wanted. Mid height canopy, glass rear window, solid access doors, Penthouse roof tent with kick up in rear, full drawer system with fridge slider, water tank/house battery mount, roof rack for the cab, load bars, ladder rack, camping table with mount, under bed storage boxes for both sides, kitchen box with organizer for the canopy, extra storage box for the canopy and of course the 270 degree awning with LED lighting and one wall(my one screw up). We ended up getting 2 awnings from them as my tech wanted one for his camp trailer and since I'm spending to save, one more awning was probably a good idea.

The order was placed in September and slated for production to be finished in about 3 weeks.

This is their truck....who could say 'no' to any of this stuff?? Well maybe the fake mud vinyl graphics.....

mmmmmmmmm........

Oh, I was dreaming.......

If you need a rear bar/carriers, we are now Kaymar reps here..... :)

View attachment 1836688

I need a spare tire carrier but my problem is the 79/80-ishness of my build. Not sure which bumper would work. I think we'll build our own. The new truck has a rear bumper that we will "resurrect" if you follow me to make it more suitable for a step/tire carrier.

The Kaymar bumper is cool though. I'm sure we could get it to fit. I have a Dobinsons on an 80 that I could probably mess with. We'll take the hard and costly route and build one...

Once they had all my hard earned USDs, production started. I can barely wait for Amazon Prime stuff to show up....so waiting for this was torture.

By late Sept, I was informed that the parts were ready to ship. Since Big Country had never exported a crate on the ocean, I had to figure out how to bring this stuff in. Hired a customs broker and started getting all my ducks in a row. I have to hand it to people that import stuff....not an easy task.

Big Country was kind enough to supply me with pics of all the stuff prior to shipping....that was pretty cool I thought. We were aiming to have have the stuff to me by the 4th Annual 70 Series Gathering but that was kind of a pipe dream.

All parts were assembled prior to being packaged...then broken down to pack them up. Obviously shipping one crate was going to be the cheapest but it ended up being 3.....one big one and then 2 for the awnings. They were too long to go in with the other stuff.

This is Aaron....who wouldn't be happy putting together these beautiful canopies?! Pretty sure they don't get a lot of requests for pics of things being built.

In looking back at these, I forgot that I bought a mid shelf too for the front section. It's removable. Pretty cool setup.

Looks like it was pretty challenging to get it all in there.....they packed stuff in every open spot...including the drawers.
