I want those in tan.

I think I'm going to see if the stereo guys can make a few sets of them for me.....I'm sure more than a few people will wan them. About the cleanest way I have seen to mount a speaker. I think they use that bump out on trucks with power windows because of clearance issues....not sure manual windows have that issue. But it looks damn good.

Going to do an overhead console deal too.....i liked this one due to how the sun visors fit up into the part. Looks really nice. Might run a switch panel up there.

That console is really slick.

I like that overhead storage option.

Maybe I can do one out of fiberglass so we can mold it and make them.....I think they'd be a great to have in any 70.

For the door card bump out, it’s to clear the magnets on modern speakers. I made some to clear mine, however a re-route of the door harness is needed as well on power windows. Iirc the control module for auto up was in the location for the speakers.

I’d be in for an overhead too so long as it works for sunroofs.

That makes sense....I didn't think the motor would be an issue. I saw a video about them popping the speakers out a bit.

Not so sure about clearing a sunroof.....

While not the best photo, I have this setup. On the other side resides a CB and HAM radio. This setup obviously wouldn't work with a sunroof.

16x7 Tacoma steel 16 hole spare wheels. Going to try a set of 17" steel FJ Cruiser wheels next I think.

Finished up some really cool dash pieces today....we were able to take the 2nd/pwr/od off from the clusters original PRNDL display and put them in the gauge pod next to the dimmer. Really slick.

Finished up the dash....springs go in tomorrow, tag goes on...it's possible I'll be driving it home for it's maiden voyage on major roads.....

First of all, you have a Beautiul build and i have really enjoyed reading through it! I have been doing some research lately for my own project that im planning and I wanted to ask about your dash. I have only been privy to driving a newer GRJ76 model (2015) and seen its dash, also some of the other vehicles online, but they all have the updated dash while yours looks like the previous generation style. do either dash components fit the firewall? or are there specific model years which are sort of half updated which use a mixture and all newer ones have the updated dash and applicable mounting points?

Just trying to be a sponge for information so anything you have is helpful! thank you!

Give me about 3 months and I will be able to tell you what it will take. I have another one of these cabs that is going to get the new airbag dash(build thread to start soon). The cabs are not the same between the old dash and the new dash trucks. Definitely some changes around the steering mounts(upper and lower) and the dash support is way different. The good news is....I'll make it all fit. Stay tuned.

My cab was a pre airbag cab....so 2009(before 9/09?).....old dash style. I think new dash is 10/09 and up. Something like that.

I kind of think that some of the old style dashes are in newer than 2009 cabs.....maybe certain markets got the old style dash? I could have sworn I saw a 2012 that had an old dash but could never figure out what market it was for.

That would be great! first hand experience is always best! so for your 2009 body, the old dash mounted up no problem at all then...

The airbag idea definitly makes sense, Ill dig a little here on vehicle models and countries to see if i can find airbag information and a split in dash parts. I thought i saw a new style dash with no airbag, but pictures on google dont tend to have the most accurate data associated with them HA.

I am in Japan for a few years (working for toyota) so I am in the planning stage now. If there are some tings i can try to look up for you here let me know, Id love to help.

out of curiousity, will you be creating a new build thread for the next cab thats on its way? Need to know if I need to update my watched thread list:clap:. Im secretly hoping you found your dream double cab!

I have not looked at this thread in some time. Funny but I am doing some things with that overhead console.

It is made by Cruiser Consoles in Toowoomba, Australia. I measured my 1999 PZJ70 and a 2914 HZJ76 and they are the same where the overhead console mounts. I am not sure is a perfect fit in the older truck but I am sure I can make it work.

Between the seats is also the same width new to old 70-series. So I am also doing a console from Cruiser Consoles.

Your truck looks most excellent by the way!

Cheers

For the truck in this build, the old dash fit right in. Not a single issue. Ordered every brace, bracket, clip, pad, screw, thingamajig right from Toyota. Of course stuffing an ECU for the 1FZFE was no small feat.

I do believe there is a new dash without airbags....I was researching new steering wheels(I have this weird thing about always buying a new steering wheel for my trucks) and I saw one for a non-air bag application....thought that was cool. My dash has airbags. Not really too excited about having non-functioning airbags in my face or my passengers face so we will be doing something with those.

Appreciate the offer for research...may take you up on that.

And yes....there will be a new build thread for the new truck. Hopefully i will start it soon. And no, it's not a double cab. I could have done the double cab but I stuck with what I know. I have something really special planned for this truck and for that, I'll need the full size bed. Kind of boring to do the same truck but with the new dash and the 1HDT.....it should keep it interesting.

The consoles are really cool....might get on building mine soon. Thinking while the interior is gutted...it might be easy for the stereo guys to do their thing. Also thought about making a fiberglass headliner...that way I could just build the whole thing as one piece....bolt it in where the grab handles, mirror, visors and light go. Could do all kinds of neat built in if it was all fiberglass......

That is great to hear! Im planning on bring home an HZJ77 from Japan so ive just been considering a LHD swap so I am researching all my dash options!

I will check parts applicablilty, I just need to search a little deeper about how to tell airbag applicablilty or not. The next layer would be destination country. I havent gone that far before but Im hoping somone here at work can help me. Your vehicles are all coming from middle east right?

Man that sounds like a great build! Im definitely looking forward to that! and bout the non funtioning airbags....I was thinking about this myself, if the ECU, front sensors, and bags are mounted with wiring complete, I dont see why they wouldnt funtion like normal since they dont use any additianl cab sensors like YAW rate. but retrofitting airbags also isnt something that makes me sleep well at night. The good news is you can just remove the inflator module and then you are ready to roll. looks the same on the outside but has no explosives inside, just a bag that will never puff up!

My tech and I were discussing the retrofit of the entire airbag system since I will be getting the entire interior from the donor truck....but it just doesn't seem like something I want to deal with. My primary reason for upgrading to the new dash is that I will be able to source the full harness, all the AC stuff and of course the dash parts...I'm trying to not have as much labor in this build. Truck is a roller, full dash with harness, diesel motor from a running truck...just hoping it comes together easier.

I have an old style dash in my parts stash that I was perfectly content to use(in all honesty....I really like the old dash...it fits that truck in my opinion....the new dash is a little to RAV4 for me). I had all my gauges laid out for the old one(EGT/boost)...and now that's all going out the window. Glutton for punishment.

Going to also try to retrofit power windows on it. That seems to be a challenge trying to figure out how to find a 2 door LC79 LHD power window control for the doors. The donor truck is a 76...so more window switches than I need.

My trucks are Middle East spec.

Oh yeah....the front windshield on new dash trucks is different than old dash trucks!
