I made a mistake in the list. I accidentally skipped over @slceso , so @DeeRex , you're first on the waiting list.

I too have a fridge, 35qt, if I don't stuff it full I'd be happy to make space for someone else.

Just today, I got the "Help, I've fallen and can't get up" contraption for those who leave the house - DeLorme InReach, with sat-based SOS and texting.

I may have some spare ports for USB charging, including the AntiGravity XPS that'll ramp a phone up to full within 2 hrs. It's also great for jumpstarts.

Aside from that, just the usual stuff - straps, shackles, shovel, saw, etc. May have some extra fuel by the time of this trip too.

Put me on the wait list please.

Alright, so let's talk about how to prepare. ...

any other lessons learned from the rest of the group regarding "oh I wish I had brought..." We have only camped a few times and our gear is kind of sparse so I will be acquiring some stuff.

I will have 5 in my party. #1 for me is the potty situation. Do people go straight up hiker trowel, or do you guys have a favorite contraption. Luckily I have 3 little boys, so trees will suffice most of the time. For the other, my oldest assures me he can "hold it" for 2 or 3 days, haha.

I had never seriously considered a fridge until now, but the hunt is on. Anybody had success with the more affordable electric coolers?

Anybody bringing small generators or anything? What about extra fuel? Anybody else running a diesel?

I have a couple of hammock tents, a regular 6 man, a 2 man. Do you guys do ultralight, RTT, anybody towing an adventure trailer?

Anybody bringing dogs? Mine aren't well behaved and we're already going to be kind of Griswold-ish. I hate to kennel them.

I know the point of this is overlanding, but what's the itinerary like? Roughly how much cab time vs camp time?

Everybody got a good flashlight? Here's a whole new obsession for you if not over at Budget Light Forums. I have bought a few of their group buy lights and they are a really good value.

Thanks, all!

I'm no pro but do have some thoughts on a few of your questions.

I'd prefer we not have a generator in camp unless it is essential. It's really annoying. But if it is required for some medical equipment or something, fine; if just an amenity to power lights or tablets for the kids - well, we're camping, and lanterns take up far less space.

As a dog person, define "not well-behaved:" are they aggressive towards people/animals, do they run off? (leave them home) Or are they just rambunctious and like to play? (which is expected of a dog and totally cool imho) FWIW my dog will wander off - which is no fair to everyone else, having to take time to try and find him, plus I'd really hate to lose him - so he probably will not be with me. Also, if the dogs have never camped before, their reactions could be unpredictable - the 1st time I took each of my dogs camping, I didn't sleep b/c each dog didn't sleep.

Set up your tent in your yard and let them explore it on their own. Throw a familiar blanket in there so they are at ease. Take a quick nap in it with them.

Your dogs will be out of their environment and they will be stressed. If you've not camped a great deal, this could make your trip miserable (or they may respond great to it, they're strange creatures). I'd suggest that until you have a camping rhythm and can accomodate your family comfortably, hold off on bringing them.

One other thing, in fairness to everyone else on the trip, resolve any mechanical issues before the trip - all vehicles should be in excellent running condition. Trail-caused issues are one thing; showing up with known problems is another.

I always find myself asking, why did I bring so much crap? :) Think about what you need. Personally, I need a chair, a tent, cooking stuff, food and drink, some tools and fluids, personal lights, a book/charged Kindle, clothes appropriate to the weather. I go to enjoy the company of others and to enjoy the outdoors, which doesn't require a ton of gear. I may bring my rc crawlers just for fun though. ;)

Kids and dogs..

Johnny is putting this one together so he may deviate from what I have seen. My short experience, it is not a hardcore expedition trip, it's a social trip with some light off-roading. 30/70% "driving/camping". A lot of the time will be spent chatting, cooking, chatting, planning, cooking, chilling, relaxing. Small waterfalls, bring towels for the kids. Lots of stops to take in the scenery, photo ops, etc.

Don't need generator, don't need a fridge just a good cooler and ice. Campsites have outhouses, bring TP.

My dogs are extremely well behaved (or like Cesar Milan would say their owner is well trained), I leave them home, this is bear and critter country and they will be active, I don't want to deal with 200lbs of dogs protecting from bears at 3am, or running away to chase a critter. Dogs can get hurt that way and would add to your stress. I love bringing them on hikes on a long leach.

Same for kids, keep them under your eyes, they are not huggable bears.

Most likely it will just be me and my dog. Well behaved camping dog (golden). Sleeping in the truck and will probably be in the 80. Not hardcore so I just want to relax and cruise. Will try to bring the bare minimum. Steve is coming and will most likely have his trailer.

@Izzyandsue this trip won't be any different than others, other than I would prefer not to stay at the same camp site (whether or not it's an official campsite) for both nights. As stated in my preparation post, I tend to over-prepare, like Joe :D

It is a good idea to have a rest room solution in case something happens and we *can't* get somewhere with facilities. I keep a shovel, TP and hand sanitizer in the truck at all times just in case. I want to buy a portable toilet, but something with a much smaller footprint than the one you linked @slceso , like this, or even this. In reality, I don't think we'll need a portable toilet solution on this trip.

People have brought dogs on these trips in the past and it's worked out well, but they were very well-behaved dogs. My dog will not be coming on this trip.

I have a diesel, but I won't be bringing extra fuel (no need). We aren't going to be covering so many miles in the woods that we need to worry about range. We'll hit a fuel station right before heading up Hurricane Creek.

I'm with the other guys, no need for a generator. A fridge isn't necessary, but if you like bringing cold things, it's a hell of a lot easier than worrying about running out of ice, or draining the cooler, or having things leak, etc. Last year was in the 90s when we started and it got much cooler up in the mountain (thank god), but if it were 90s out the whole time, would the cooler keep ice for 2+ days with people going in and out frequently?

I want to make the driving closer to 50/50, but I also want to get to our campsite each night well before dark, so we'll stop driving around 5pm each day I'd guess. It'll be open to change based on the events of the day as well as the group opinion.

The wait list is growing. Are we going to run two groups up Hurricane Creek?

There is also a trip in May that is NOT on the calendar. Guess this trip is not official

This trip will be one group. However, feel free to sign up for either of the other HC trips this summer, or organize your own!

You're right, it's not, but neither is the Relic Run, so it's all good!

@lumbee1 and all others:

There will also be a July and an August trip to HC. They're on the calendar.

EDIT: Plus the May trip that Stan is leading.

Izzy will be leading, navigating, I just posted up the thread to invite others to come with us if they like. :) The main goal of this trip is to totally wing it and be as informal as possible. Above all, find new to us tracks!

I don't care if the May run is on the calendar, just a point of amusement.

I do think that the Relic Run should be added to the official calendar. I see this event gaining steam to become a signature event on the East Coast if this first event is a hit. Is there some sort of issue with TLCA if it becomes an official event? I really think that David came up with a great idea. I know that we will be there on Sat to check out all the trucks, if my 40 were driveable I'd be registered.

Thanks for your opinion stan. I'm glad we're amusing to you

David and I have talked about the Relic Run. Generally how it goes is that if someone comes up with an event and it's popular the first year, then we typically put it on the calendar as an official event, which gets promoted in a few different ways.

Let's keep the discussion in this thread on topic for the June Hurricane creek trip.

Please put me on the wait list. Hoping to hit as many of these trips as I can (assuming biscuit is ready for any of them)...
