What fails on the rails? Mine still opens and closes, but sometimes makes chattering noises. Would I likely need rails, or does it just need a good cleaning and reassembly?
Excellent write up. Thanks for posting the detailed instructions!!

You more than likely need to do a good cleaning and lube of the rails and related sliding parts.

would normal bearing grease work for the rails? or do i need silicon based or something else.....

thanx

After cleaning all the moving/sliding surfaces I use Dow-Corning (now Dupont) Molykote 33 Medium. It's a lithium based silicone grease, you can order it from any large supply house like Motion Industries. This grease doesn't have any "Moly" in it despite the name, Molykote is Dupont's brand name for a line of products.

Here's a link (Edited, Molykote products are now made by Dupont apparently):

Thank you....but being in Sudan, North Africa...it would be to expensive to ship here....but thanx for the info anyway.

Fantastic write up.

I am adding a few pics to supplement the original thread.

First pic is of the alignment marks discussed in step (18).

Second pic is of the shims. Note on the shims: when you look closely, you may find shims of different thicknesses. On my truck the forward position on each side had one each of the thicker and thinner shims. Make sure you take note when you remove them so that you put the right combination back.

Also adding a couple of high res photos of the gear alignment

Has anyone every pulled the sunroof and just sheet metal welded in? I can honestly say I wouldn't even miss the sunroof. Especially the maintenance after 10-12 years.

This is the route I want to go, a pal of mine is in the process of doing the same thing as well.
Strange that no one has done a write up on this before...

As I was trying to remove a completely oxidized screw on a 1992, I seem to have applied too much pressure on the wrong place and down went the gold colored screw holder! I somehow managed to get the piece to work its way towards the visor hole and managed to get it out.

Questions -
1) anyone know what part number that little golden screw holder is? Mine is toast.
2) how would I go about putting that piece back in without taking down the headliner (which I read is a major PITA)?

I might end up having to do the same! Going to give it my best shot and hope for the best. Trying to re-create that little golden piece along with the correct groove to have the screw hold tight might prove to be quite the endeavor!

This is a great write-up!!

@Romer could you add this to the FAQ?

Done. In the repair section under interior so it is near the sunroof drain thread

Cruiser folk,
My cables snapped as well. Can you order replacement cables or do you have to order the rails/cable combo?
I assume they are a combo because I can't find a part # for the cables only.
Or will the cables from another Toyota work for my 96 LC?
Thanks for the help.
