The number of potential customers wanting to buy mats may be significant but I'd hate to think of the number of design variations that may be needed to satisfy all these customers.

@rockcrawler and myself researched the number of different OEM mats with the idea of getting some made at one stage and then backed out:

A number of people have inquired about the floor mat, so I think this is a good time to share an interim update.

Let's start with where @lostmarbles left off. Yes, there are many variations; However, the good news is that there are two dominant types that will fit most applications:
  1. There is the "black mat" for the '75 to '78 models. The same mat will fit earlier trucks as well, provided that the shifter holes are not pre-cut.
  2. There is the "grey mat" for the '79 and later models.
These two mats are not only different in color, stepping patterns, and logo location, the molded (or "moulded" for those in Australia) shapes are also different due to the different transmission hump on the '79 and later models.

For reasons of cost and complexity, I decided to focus on the black mat (For those with the grey mat, keep reading; I'm saving the best for last).
A mock-up mat with the black-mat's overall shape is nearly finished. If all goes as planned, I should be able to do a trial fit on @ginmtb 's truck in a couple of weeks, and then bake the design into a mold. At this time there is no stepping pattern; that will be added into the mold later.
The material will be PVC, but it will not be the thick version. This decision was made after a lot of deliberation. The reason has to do with the assessment that the machine will have difficulty making the stepping pattern on top of thick PVC. A lot has been said about the heat that emanates from the floor. However, a floor mat will never be as effective in blocking heat as insulation material, like this. It's an easy $30 solution.
Now, what about the grey mat? Well, here's an interesting discovery. You may be able to buy it already! with the caveat being it's in Australia. Check it out here. They even put the Toyota Logo on it. I don't know more about it. I sent a couple of emails to that place but got no response. Perhaps someone in that neck of the woods can help to find out more about it?

That's Peter (Tojo 4WD Centre) and I've always found him good to deal with.

I have no idea on the mat he's selling.

Maybe Alex/Rockcrawler went ahead and got some made after all and these are them? (I haven't been in contact with Alex for a long while and I see he last posted on ih8mud in 2013.)

Surely someone in Oz must have purchased one of these and is able to comment on the quality level!

I would pay that

Thicker is better, but I would strongly suggest molding it so you can place a dynamat or hushmat underneath it. Might be smart to offer a dynamat or hushmat custom fitted as well and sell as a combo or separately.

Does this mat have the LOGO on it ??

Hang on a minute!

Maybe you guys know more about mats than I do but why is there so much interest in these Aussi mats from the USA?

I know a few of you guys over there have imported RIGHT-HAND-DRIVE models but surely not this many.

Australia is a country (like New Zealand and Japan) where people drive on the left and predominantly use RHD vehicles. (So there's no market for LHD 40-series floor mats.)

In post #61 I showed how many different mats Toyota made for 40-series (and that's not even a complete list).
And whilst doing that research I was always under the impression mats for RHD and LHD were significantly different.

So @Ming89FJ62 and @62Cruiser and @447xpro ..... have you one and all got imported RHD models or are you one and all all of the belief that the RHD mat Peter is offering will fit your LHD model?

No real difference that I know of. On the pre 79 mats Toyota on either side of the hump in the same location. FJ25 had the transfer case and hand brake on opposite sides but from then the same shifters were used. All the pedals were mounted above the mat. Fuel tanks were in the same location RHD or LHD.

Realize this a post 78 which the seating is mounted to a brackets above the tank which should have no effect on the mat.

Thanks for your input John.

My driver's-side floor-well is significantly wider than my passenger's side floor-well.

Does that mean that you guys who sit on the left have more of a cramped floor-space than I do?

I've been assuming Toyota always made the floor-space wider for the driver and that this was one of the things that necessitated a different tub between LHD and RHD vehicles..

But I admit this has always been a "grey area" in my knowledge.

And I acknowledge that I don't know of any differences in the drivetrain layout between LHD and RHD vehicles and it makes sense that the drivetrain layout determines the position of the tranny-hump. So on this basis, perhaps you guys who sit on the left to drive are indeed cramped into less space?

This is the sort of confusion that caused Alex and myself a lot of grief when we were considering getting mats made. (Well actually it was Alex rather than myself who was the driver behind the proposal/project that we had.)

I have never measure the two sides of the floor to see if one was bigger but the hump is made to cover the transmission, transfer case and PTO. With a PTO there really isn't any movement left or right between the frame rail which would be require to be able to change the amount of room on the driver's side. Unless they have made the hump larger than it needs to be just for this purpose which to me would made no sense. If they were shifting the transfer shifter between sides maybe but after the FJ2X series the T/T and PTO shifter were in the same place RHD or LHD.:meh:
