How much would my rig go for?

Hello all,

I've been thinking about looking to get a smaller more efficient car, I know... It's sad. But i'm spending about $163.79 every month on gas, and it costs me about $6.97 to get to and from school everyday. I'm getting 11.5 mpg right now, but even if i got 15, i would still be paying $125.57 per month. The truck is in excellent condition, it has 166,000 miles, the paint is beautiful, she runs like a champ, and has given me barely any problems besides a water pump within the first month of the purchase which I got done professionally. The tires have about 75% life left and the car is completely stock.

I would hate to see her go, but its just not responsible to keep her at this point in my young life. My dream was to build her up safari style but given my pockets aren't spilling over with money, that's not gonna happen anytime soon. So my question is, how much are they going for and how much are they actually worth in southern California? Would you suggest hanging on to her or should I sell and buy again at a later, more profitable time in my life (hoping there will be one of course)?

I've looked on KBB, and their cars only go back to 92. For a 92, it says it should go for $3,226.

If 163.79/mo for fuel seems like a lot then you definitely need a small car.

It has a center diff lock, but no front or rear lockers.

Need more info and pictures! It could be anywhere from 3k on up.




 
If you got 30mpgs in your new econo box and somehow swapped 1:1, is $60/mo really worth it?

In addition, what are you going to find that's 1) more reliable, 2) less maintenance, and 3) less miles for the 5k you're going to get for the cherry '92 LC?

Also, don't forget about tax, title, and registration which is a bitch in California.

To come out ahead, you'll need a perfect storm of luck... something like finding a well maintained 2000's Camry/Fusion/LS300 for at least $500 less than you get for the LC, with new rubber, and 100% up to date on service. Not to mention you'll be competing with everyone and their mother with disposable income looking for a 2nd vehicle.

If you go to the dregs of vehicles like a tiny-ass old accord/integra/etc. is that $60 in gas savings worth injury in a wreck.

Sometimes it's better to stick it out with the devil you know than open a new mystery, especially for such low return.

Financially, it's almost always more sensible to keep the car you have, instead of getting a car with better gas mileage.

Do you have a monthly budget? A budget will help you make room for your gas costs.

I've been there, so I can appreciate the pain of filling up a truck with a big appetite on a limited budget. Your truck looks in really good shape and with that low of miles you may have a hard time replacing it down the road. That's not to say that you couldn't but if its the truck you really want I say hang on to it and get a small bore bike. When I was in school I didn't have near as sweet of a truck, but I had a Honda XR that gave me 47 miles a gallon - they are cheap and it was dead reliable. When I needed to, I drove the truck. I was in Hawaii at the time so the weather accommodated such an arrangement. Never lived in SoCal but I imagine that you could get away with it there as well, weather wise.

To help answer your question as to what it's worth, there is a similar (appearing) condition '92 with 145k on local CL and they are asking $7900. 80s in good nick don't pop up a ton around here.

This is really good advice. The 5-10 grand used car market is a total crap shoot. And driving as few miles as you do a month you aren't going to see a big return on fuel economy - no matter how good it is.
