My door locks no longer turn with the key (ignition does though) and I have tried graphite and wd-40 to no avail. I guess I am going to try the new key route now.

They are under $10 I believe.

Why not call and ask him?

Any total dealer can do this off your vin, I got 2 6 years ago round 20 bucks I think

My dealer told me it would cost "about $30" to cut a key from my VIN. It seemed high, but I was there.... He cut the key, and wrote out the bill for $10. At *that* price I decided I wanted a second. For the second key he said it wasn't worth writing a second invoice.

...so anywhere from $5 each (if you're lucky) to $30 each if the parts guy is in a "mood".

it also depends if you are getting the original key with the black plastic or if you re getting the boring valet looking key too.

my toyota dealer in valencia ca wanted $35 for the black plastic keys!!.. i told them sell it to someone else!

My VIN cut keys are very stylish, thank you. I suppose I should also have mentioned that getting new keys did not completely resolve my issues with door locks. My locks worked MUCH smoother after I used a very liberal application of graphite impregnated lock lubricant.

Slight tangent - is there any option for a new LX450 key other than the Lexus dealer? I haven't checked, but it seems I heard they are around $70.

I found mine on ebay

Awesome. Thanks for the part number. Quick google search says they are about $30. How much does it cost to cut them? My local Toyota dealer said they couldn't do it.

Guy at locksmith told me if having lock trouble try 2 things first:
  • Light (less is better) shot of Teflon Dry Lube in Spray Can
  • Get a new key cut preferably from dealership instead of from duplicate

as for the Lexus key: Sewell Lexus in Dallas can cut them from your VIN number, and you get a discount (IIRC ~25%) from them if you sign up with Club Lexus first (then give them your Club LX username when you order) - you will have to document ownership of your truck to them (their website will instruct you when you order the key(s) - everything can be done online (of course, you can call if you want, too), takes less than a week, fits perfect

now I only need to get additional keyfobs working . . .

I bought a Lexus key off ebay for $7 & had local locksmith cut it for $10 so $17 for new key. Sewell in Dallas wanted something like $55 for the key & cut.

Thanks everyone! I went by Toyota when I got off and went outside and the new keys do everything! Just think I was about to put in new door lock cylinders! Thanks IH8MUD!!!!

Glad to hear it was an easy fix

After reading this it reminded me that my rear hatch cylinder was getting "finicky", sometimes wouldn't unlock/lock on the first try. So this afternoon I stopped by a local dealer and had a new key cut for my FZJ80 using the VIN. Parts guy found the key code in Toyota's system and (after confirming my identity and ownership) cut me a new key using the code. Comparing the new key to the old one it was immediately apparent that the old key (not the original) was very worn but also had not been cut very well; the notch at the base that positions the key at the correct depth in the cylinders was way off. The hatch cylinder now opens and closes perfectly using the new correctly cut key. $7 for a plain steel key (no rubber). FWIW.

Wow. I just got quoted $148 CAD for a VIN cut key for my 97 lx450 at the Victoria Lexus stealership. That is for the key only! Fob is extra.. yikes.

That sounds about right. I only had one key handed to me when I picked up my LX. That’s about what I paid for an extra key. Then found two extras under the truck.
