That's a shame, I hate losing the old ones. Looks like a red oak and rot right up the middle. I was going to suggest a fireplace mantle, but with that rot in the middle and the punky ( dead ) wood around the outside, you might have to think of something smaller. Oaks trees are so much more majestic when they grow in a field verses in the woods. The limbs spread out so wide to show off their beauty, that they never could, fighting for real-estate in the woods. On a positive note, he'll serve you one last time with wonderful heat in your new fireplace. What do they say, something like a tree heats you many times, cutting it, stacking it, hauling in the house, burning it and hauling out the ashes. Enjoy the process.
Fireplace mantle is exactly what we are thinking if we can make it happen.

Agree these oaks need their space. We are looking for good 3 point wood chipper to chip all the small 3-4” trees that are starving others in the woods.

I have skid steer mulcher and it works ok but we would be more effective pulling them with skid steer them mulching, saving the mulch to use around garden and house.

Old car port coming down today which saved our cars from many dents from hail through the years. For new home, it has to go!

Good family work outside which makes for a great day! Even with skid steer for big stuff this is quite a bit of work.
