what would be your preferred sleeping arrangement assuming two people… in bad weather
I think the awning tent can accommodate 2 people, and would probably be okay during a little rain, not sure about how it would handle continuous, hard, down pour. There isn’t a lot that can. Out on the river, you’re restricted to a tent or a tarp during bad weather, so what you have better be suited to deal with it.
Gonna be a lot of trial and error, I’m sure.

My next shot in the dark for —>the perfect setup<—- is a small Offroad trailer. Pull it beind anything. Won’t limit Pig Offroad much, or if it does, leave at as a base camp. Nothing fancy, place for 2 to sleep, cooking stuff, maybe a tent on top for 4 of us, but probably let them sleep in Pig or in a real tent, could stay in it for weeks and inclement weather.

The wife and I were very comfortable in our awning room. We have a queen size, self inflating, massively tall inflatable mattress with a head board. It was a little tight spaced with that thing but we slept like we do in a hotel bed. It could definitely handle heavy rain and has. The roof is double roofed and as long as you give the awning a bit of a slope, the water will not run in. The sides are water proof and the floor goes up the sides about a foot. So it could be in standing water without the water coming in. In case you wake up in a small river like we all have being in a tent. There is no need for a ground sheet or footprint, but I could see the appeal with one to give you something to step on before climbing in the tent room. I just don't know where I will put one just yet.

WE will be traveling with dogs most of the time. Of course they sleep the bed a ton of the time. We have always used the Cabela's 6 person guide tent and it has handled crazy weather and never failed us. We recently purchased a Big Agnes 4 season tent but the awning tents are intriguing for sure. There is no way my fat ass is going to climb up into the roof top tent.
How long does it take to set up and take down awning tent?

Time feels like a scarce commodity right now. When I have it (time) I am usually fixing or upgrading things vs. road tripping. I look forward to changing that equation...
you just got home!! 😀

Trial and error is right. I've towed a military trailer around and got in places you don't want one behind you, but solves the extra space issue. I bought an OZ Tent that goes up and down in a couple minutes, but weighs #57 and is long. I threw my back out pulling it off the roof rack, but it is easy to set up which I really want and I can stand in it. So, now it's the RTT. I guess I'm covered for any trip now.

Overland Expo in Loveland August 27th-29th. Tons of exhibitors. Wife and I will be hopefully checking em out.

These trucks ride slightly better than a tractor IMHO and putting them on the highway is a dangerous proposition at least for me.

True! I think with the boy starting high school, and that Dad will not be around forever have me thinking about priorities and values, and time...

The next 4 years will be time for some important memories. I don't think the boy, or Dad really care how much I wrench on the pig.
