Here is a video of the truck running.

Here is a video same adjustments after driving a few miles.

I readjusted the IAC again, a bit higher, same outcome.

After driving a few miles the truck died here is the restart with this adjustment.

It is likely I am misadjusting or overlooking something, however in case of the blind squirrel and I happen to have everything installed and adjusted properly, what could cause it consistently run poorly after a few mile drive?

I’m being difficult on purpose, but show us the process (video running the whole time) to get the IAC between 2-10% at operating temp, and then prove it by showing the screen. All in same video. Still waiting on that.

That’s the first step. Can’t move to step two until this has happened.

Everything else is hypothetical and a waste of time until step one has been checked off

The video of trying to reach step one will show us what we need to see.

Also still need to see your wizard settings, idle settings, AFR settings. This is the pre-requisite to step one.

I would love to however I have adjusted the IAC both running and off and can’t get it where it stays between 2-10%. I have gotten it to 14 and where it eventually settles to zero, but nothing in between.

The difference seems to only be a sweep on the IAC screw between 10 and 2 O’ Clock and have had 2 dozen adjustments between. A

Am I even adjusting the right thing?

Video it so we can see. You aren't in trouble, . It's a very fine adjustment once you get close. This is mostly difficult because we are getting ahead of ourselves. The go round it wasn't the Sniper, it was the head gasket, but the Sniper blame got the most traction and posts and attention. We are still blaming the Sniper but haven't proved it yet.

Video the adjustment process. Grab a helper if you need to. If it settles at zero, you need to open it more. Have the manual open and refer to it in the video so we can follow the process and your process with you.

Bump! We need this information to compare with what the screen shows. Part of the diagnosis. This is actually easy if you are willing to think like fuel injection without trying to make it be a carburetor. Pinky promise

Wizard set up video.

Here are shots if some of the other tuning screens.

Here is a video of me setting the IAC to the proper % range. After I cycle the ignition, it restarts at 30%. I am able to let it run and it will settle down some, just nowhere near the setting prior to cycling the ignition.

How long should it take the IAC % to settle back down to the setting prior to turning the truck off after restart?

Thanks again for all the help!

It looks stable. Still premature to panic. There’s a huge difference in conditions going on here from start to finish and the IAC is responding in kind

In the first, the truck is still warming up (even if above 160) and almost up to temp at the end.

Keep adjusting the IAC. There is still some warming up to do even at end of last video. Adjust again after you drive it 20 minutes to really get hot.

What is your timing set to? We still need to verify and dial that in.

Anyone remember “ Dallas”. The cliffhanger episode. : Who Shot JR?

@desmocruiser This post is as good. I am anxious to learn the outcome. Sorry that you’re having these issues but we’re all learning something here
Let it be known I too have had less then textbook performance from the IAC. I can finally get it around 10…however within about 40 seconds it drifts back down to zero. For me if they said IAC is 2-12, and I don’t get it there …if feel that it’s wrong and I have to keep working on it..

On the other hand, I don’t believe in 51 years I have driven a better running FJ40….i do run the Mosley modified Hyperspark ignition system And absolutely love it. I wish I could help more. I was a carb guy ( had them all Aisin, Holley, Rochester and Weber ) and the idea of fuel injection is only beginning to come into view.

If it wasn’t for being 98% stock, I would go with the exact same setup on my 45. Have you looked into a vacuum leak?

Thanks!

I do recall that episode, I am old enough to have experienced TV with only 3 stations, I think I am reliving it with my 40, just minus Charlene Tilton!

The IAC has been a challenge for me to keep in the ideal range on this truck and this thread has really helped me gain a better understanding of the dialing in process.

However, it was likely that it was never perfectly dialed in during the 3 years I have owned the truck, but it always ran well and I enjoyed it frequently, at least 4k miles per year. I wouldn’t hesitate to take the truck on a several hundred mile trip and it never acted in a way that I was concerned I may not make it off the trail or home, I was a big cheerleader for the Sniper system.

Further, determining the issue that started this journey and this thread helped diagnose was a head gasket instead of anything to do with the Sniper, gave me additional confidence in the system.

After the running issue when warm occurred we checked for vacuum leaks (ran a new vacuum line from the advance), verified and reset the timing to ~12*, and visually checked all the work that had been done. I had a Toyota Master Tech adjust the valves and he confirmed the proper lash on 2-3 occasions prior to installing the valve cover.
