That's one I've managed before and plan to do again. Think autoparts store on the corner has a loan-a-tool for the puller I needPulling the radiator is easy. 2 hose clamps, a bucket and 8 bolts holding it to the radiator supports. Slides up and out. Might need to borrow a puller for the crank pulley, but once that is off the timing cover just unbolts.
Yeah, it was getting dark and was racing the clock for kiddo bedtime so I just got that front and a middle one off and back on again quick. Doing it this time should be just a few minutes. You've made some good headway. Lots of items eliminated.
Investigate that tooth from post #151 a bit more, and share some more photos if you can get them. That would be a very odd failure indeed for a few reasons.
Looks like you still have another main bearing to get pulled. You won't have the full story on the failure until you get that off. Keep at it.
I think biggest worry about tranny a drop or engine pull is I've never done either. Never even witnessed one other than on TV. Just feel like all that weight has me nervous and I'm likely a one man show here. Even if I had a helper, me being the one directing the show for another inexperienced person just has me worried. Probably overly concerned but just don't have a much confidence on this. Like I imagine myself getting the trans onto the jack and then it dumping over sideways or onto me while I'm under there manipulating it or something. I don't know. There's probably some videos on youtube that might help me feel better about it. Ultimately it would be cool to do either myself and then actually be able to get it back together properly.
I'm the earlier thimble guy.. If you can do what you've already done, IMHO you can absolutely do the tranny/transfer case...I think biggest worry about tranny a drop or engine pull is I've never done either. Timing cover first I suppose. If it's not the a bearing, or that...it pretty much has to be somewhere back there I guess. If it is the timing gear or cam gear, are those replaceable without pulling the engine?
It turns for sure. It goes a bit, then clogs up with the metal debris, then goes some more. Stopped turning it, thinking I might be doing more damage. It'll turn though for sureDoes the crank turn?
Well then, here's wishing for smooth and shiny, like my bald ass head after a good shave! That is your classic spun bearing! Get both halves out and see what the main journal looks like. If its smooth and shiny, you can stuff some new bearing in. Youve gone this far, you can get it back together!!
When I was younger I'd stuff a 4-speed by sitting in the truck, picking it up by the shifter, and finding the fit. A transmission jack makes that so much easier. Not an SM465, but a 4L60 and Np205. Id say you can get away with dropping without a tranny jack but it really shines when you try to put it back in. I bought this one the day my tranny blew from Harbor Freight. It was not expensive.View attachment 2811325
