So for those who had done this swap… H55F + split case + tc mounted ebrake

On an fj40

How bad is the short rear drive shaft? A lot say it pretty short… any pics?

I have an about 3” +- lift and know height will make things worse

How bad is it really

Preliminary stage of possibly getting this setup… thinking out my trucks future :)

Adding a pic because we like pics

I didn’t consider reversing the springs … my tranny has many miles on it … probably 100k and transfer is a three speed tc and has about the same 100k or more as they were both used and mileage's unknown

Both are gonna need complete rebuilds at some point and if I’m spending coin maybe an upgrade could happen instead

The later 4 speed with split case e-brake look like a nice upgrade, and about the same lenght as your actual set-up .

I think about this for my sbc fj40, i have 4:56 gear and could gain a lower rpm at 65mph with 3:70 , i also think about 3:1 gear for the split case to have a better crawl ratio , and with the sbc 350, the small 25mm idler shaft of the one piece case wear faster than i wish, split case is bigger, 38 mm

I like the set up @1911 has… H41, split case and 3.73 diffs from a 60. Granny 1st gear which gets you lower in 4L and the 3.73 gives you the longer gearing.

Edit: Hit @orangefj45 up and they can talk you through all the pros and cons and build what ever you decide on.

I’ve got a split case w/ e-brake that I’ve had for years sitting in my garage in a box. Even with 3.70 gears and 33s, it’d be nice to have the OD.

The reality is there’s a bit to it on a ‘74 like mine.

To answer your question it would be 4” shorter than a stock H42 rear driveshaft.

I have a South American 6/79 build date FJ40. I replaced the H41 + trashed single case with a H42 + split case + t-case drum e-brake + Tom Woods custom drive shaft going to 3.70 diffs on 2.5in OME springs and 33 x 10.5 BFG M/T’s. The older H41 bolt pattern wouldn’t mount to the newer tcase. Valley Hybrids hooked me up with the secret sauce to bolt the stock ebrake up to the split case. It’s a good all around setup. I used the OTRAMM video to rebuild the split case and had no issues. Used Toyota red anaerobic sealant and have zero leaks.

I was thinking Georg or Kurt if it was going to be a complete system or at least the things I need to rebuild ….

I do like the idea of the diffs more I think about it

The flange is different for the 85+ fj60 I read…. So that would make pre 85 direct bolt up? … but later years I can use the flange from my 4.11?

Still have some time to think about it as the tub is still on the truck … if it falls off things will go quicker lol

I chose to keep the parking brake on mine but had to cut the torque tube out. I now have a 3" exhaust routed along the driver side frame like it was before and there is no room for the tube to be relocated. I have not replaced my drive shafts yet because the rear axle perches are in the same location with the center line of the differential as the 40 series axle. My 60 series axle is 1.5 inches to the DS right now once that is corrected I will take measurements from flange to flange and order a set.

I switched to a floor mounted brake lever and got the short cable from Australia..

4Plus was making a crossmember kit if you cut your torque tube out. I don't see it currently on his site but maybe he still has them.

I've got a trans crossmember from a later year FJ40 in a box, too. There were two different styles. One gives more clearance? I've got the less desirable one, IIRC.

I have asked Dave about and it seems it is his HD skid plate we talked about on the phone and he did not have one but thinks it should be there.

JohnnyC, I went from a 3spd to a 81 FJ60 H42 with a 34mm split case. I had to change the tunnel, this helped me with having the hole in the right spot for a 5spd down the road. I then swapped in a set of 3.70 diffs and ran that combo for a while. I really liked that combo, I then swapped in a 5spd (caught a price drop on the H55s and bought one) and then pulled the 3.70 axles for the white 40 I was building. I also installed a FF rear axle with a locking diff from an 80 series. Around here, I liked the 4spd with 3.70s. The 5spd is nice but my motor doesnt have enough oompf to really take advantage of the 5spd.

I did similar but kept the 4:11 gears and converted a 60 series rear axle to full floating. The transmission cover still needs to be modified and got a 60 series top cover that will be grafted in for the location of where the sifters come through the floor.

I was seriously contemplating jumping into the H55 pool…. But @cruisermatt provided another path forward option - I won’t be able to answer the driveshaft length question

Some swap details here: (work in progress)

We have all the parts in stock to build H55F/BF1 Split T-Case combos with the integrated part brakes. I've got a 67' FJ40 rocking this combo and using stock spring mounts and orientation. It's a short but workable rear driveline.

what was the other path forward, just curious.

81-84 H42 / splitcase with 10% overdrive gears and 3:1 low. will bolt right into his 74 with only a front driveshaft shortening as the only change.
Also my rear drum brake kit for the parking/Ebrake.
