81-84 H42 / splitcase with 10% overdrive gears and 3:1 low. will bolt right into his 74 with only a front driveshaft shortening as the only change.
Also my rear drum brake kit for the parking/Ebrake.
learned something new.

If I am not mistaken you have to swap the 40 series top cover over to the 60 series tranny.

I installed a SBC, H55f, 38mm split case with parking brake and it all comes in through the stock holes on my 77 FJ40. I used the Toyota split case parking brake as well. Cruiser Outfitters should have all the parts to make that work.

Not your exact set but incase it provides any sort or comparison for you. SBC conversion with engine place per Downey instructions. Behind that a NV4500, AA's latest adapter which is longer than the original, one piece TC. I had to remove the parking brake assembly to get it all installed because I did want to cut out the looped crossmember. Once the trans and TC were installed I installed the parking brake which barely cleared the crossmember. Suspension is OME 2 - 2-1/2 lift, rear axle on jack stands so springs are under load.

Angles are different so can't tell if #cruiseroutfit example is shorter or longer. No shims or rotation of axle housing and no vibration issues. This photo was taken in Dec. 2014 and still running the same setup except exhaust was updated after this photo.

Yes, he is getting an 40 top cover. The donor transmission is out of an actual 81-84 40 series and already has the correct one.

100%, with all new t-case parts if desired too!

I think mine is a tad shorter. We didnt do the install on this 40, but we built the trans/tc, front disc axle, etc. So when the customer wanted to sell, I snatched it up as a fun "ranch" Cruiser. I may move the rear axle back similar to what I did decade ago in my blue 72 with the 2F/H55F

No v8 … all my friends had them growing up … I like being the oddball :)

I believe my tranny is an h42 (I think) with 3 speed TC with the lower low range than the 4TC. … I am liking the idea of the 3.70’s as that would free up some $$$ for my other plans

Great suggestion @jim land

So many ideas to contemplate

the nice things about a split case are the oil capacity, they are far less leak prone, bigger gears and bearings, and better case design that dissapates heat faster. They run a lot quieter. They are worth it in my opinion.

I wouldn't assume you have the lower range gear like the three unless you know it was changed. Up to 4/75 the four speed used the same input gear and high range output gear as the three. The low range gears are the same as 4/75 plus gears mated to a four speed in one piece transfer cases. Would check your.datr stamped into the housing.

I agree they are worth adding. Just not sure I would want the 10% OD on all high range gears in an H42. Taller tires and higher diff gears like 3.70:1 think a H41 first gear might not be as bad on pavement.

It's situationally dependent of course. The vehicle that the combo I described is going into has lower axle gears (4.56 I think)

I could see this being a good set. Using stock 4.11:1 diffs in high range would be like 370:1. Switch to low range and would be 4.11:1 diffs. Plus instead of a under two to one ratio it would be three one.

the high range gear set doesn't really effect the low range more then a few percentage points since the input gear tooth count isn't that much different. It's only something like 2% if I remember correctly.

Thanks Matt
I am also swinging the pendulum back from the 3.70 R&P I did @12 years ago to 4.56 R&P to be able to enjoy more crawl on the trails…

Just my two cents, when deciding which path to take there are several variables.....What do you want the truck to do and what can you afford. A little more top end without changing much, larger tires. Better top end and drive ability, diff regearing. More top end, better ground clearance and ability to start off in a lower gear, H55F. Best of all worlds; lower rear diff, taller tires, H55F, cut split case with over and under drive gears.
I have tried some of these combos already, the grimwreaper site was the best for exploring options so I could get a good idea of rear drive final ratios and then could determine costs. The H42 with 3.70 gears was a good budget friendly combo. Finding a H42 with a split case is better yet as you have future options such as over/under drive gears.

Which transmission and transfer case are you currently running? Going from 3.70:1 to 4.56:1 seems mighty drastic change. If you travel any distance to the trail you engine will be screaming at you on the pavement. Straight six is a good low RPM torque engine. But likes the lower RPM on the highway. The H55 give five gears. That is an advantage. The the split case with 3 to 1 in low range and 10% in high range along with 4.11 :1 diffs you wound gain a lot off road and still be close to what you currently in high range. Obviously cheaper just changing diff gears but everything you gain on the low end is lost on the high end.

He has a stock 75-80 2F/H42/case. He'll be putting in a 81-84 H42/split with the overdrive/3:1 gear set I am building him. This way he has both low crawl, good top end, and an easy install (no tunnel mods, only one driveshaft to shorten, no need to add crossmember, rear driveshaft can still have decent lenght as he is going to a bigger lift as well). I talked him out of an H55f, in my opinion they are not always the best option for 40 series retrofits with the transfer case gear options available at much lower costs these days (and I have installed several H55f's into 40 series).
