VENDOR ALERT: Not a sales pitch, just an FYI.
We have imported hundreds of Harrop Eaton ELockers in the last several years. Not cheap, but easy to install (given decent shop skills and tools) with excellent results. No disrespect to the air lockers, both are fine units, just different.

Awesome timing :) Just make sure you get the right front on the GX470 as we have the 3.73 carrier (easier to call out awesome vendors to confirm correct parts).

Thanks. Yep, the front has two p/n listed based upon ratio. It gets a little complicated when regearing with non-OEM spec gears may require use of the "other" p/n due to thickness of housing. Here is a comparison of the two models. With a lower gear, the ring gear gets thicker....

Correction on your web page for the A9334 Rear locker. You call out 03-09 GX460 but it should be GX470

Crap, I hate that!

Thanks!

And Dan....Are you saying the the factory R&P is weak? Or the factory FJ set up....or both until you step up to 8.2?

Both (as they are the same from GX 2003-09 and FJ from 07-09). Well known. I broke my R&P in a gravel road :P.

There are about 8 I know of that have already broken their rear R&P in GXes, and a lot more in FJs.

So what would be better

Upgraded Stock LSD non-factory Upgrade R+P as well.

or

New 150 version stock LSD.

I believe the 150 stock and the 120 upgraded R&P are about the same (given the same ratio). This is not a scientific analysis :)

The lower gear ratios are BEEFY. I mean really beefy. Check the difference:

Stock (with some teeth missing, note the backing plate and overall thickness of the ring gear):

After several years....the 150 8.2 is for sure way stronger than the 120 8" rear. I have seen no amount of build in an 8" that will hold off failure in hard wheeling.

Sooo …. Everyoe with the 8.32” is happy and no failures?
I saw a few post of blown 8.2
I believe most are the elocker version, which is almost the same as 8.0 elocker version.
The non elocker 8.2 or the later 8.2 elocker with eaton style actuator are stronger.

Ben Calhoon destroy his 8.2 in his LC250 but it's more of the 74Weld portal axle failure that destroy the locker.

I don’t do any serious King of Hammers type of offroading. However, I run 35’s now, my GX is heavier with steel bumpers and gear, and I have been in numerous situations that a rear locker would be very helpful. I don’t intend to rock crawl my rig, but it seems like the stock 8” rear diff has known failures under ‘normal’ offroading with some mods. From what I have read, the 8.2” is sufficiently stronger than the 8” for us weekend warriors.

Am I misguided?

Also, someone had an “ultimate guide” with a compatibility list of diffs for the GX470. Does anyone have that link handy?

They are definitely much stronger than open 8" diff. 8.2 elocker is the easiest way to gain stronger diff and locker at same time.

I still run 8.0 elocker with 35 for more than 3 years. Mine have solid pinion spacer, runs heavy carrier bearing preload and also run 85W-140 Lucas Dyno oil recommended by ECGS.

You would be fine with 8.2 elocker.
Open 8.2 with aftermarket locker are stronger but only make sense if you regearing at same time. With 35, you should consider regearing. 4.56 would be good or 4.88 if you are really heavy.

I have collected an 8.2 3rd member from a GX460 (rusty, but I can get it blasted it it was only $285) and have an OEM trussed 8.2 housing on order from Japan (Prado 150/non-US FJ Cruiser part number). I will update my build thread when the parts arrive and I confirm whatever nuance is needed to make this conversion work. I plan to re-use my axleshafts, brakes/brake lines, driveshaft, etc. The only complicated parts I foresee is 1) confirming that the GX470 rear sway bar mounts are in the same location and 2) figuring out how I can use my adjustable Ironman rear coil spring conversion mounts on the OEM coil rear axle or if I need to just get longer coils and ditch the conversion kit.

So I just bought my GX470 around 5 months ago and have done some small upgrades such as Bilstein 5100s in the front, threw a roof rack on it and a set of General Grabbers. I am putting sliders on here in the near future and the build list continues to grow. I had an FJ that had a rear locker and it worked wonders! I would love to triple lock my GX in the future and wanted some input from some of you who may have done it already.

I am looking at one of these to replace my 2001 4runner that frame was too far gone. I hope it will be better than the 4runner. Cant bring myself to pay the prices or take any chances on these newer ones.

Honestly a locked rear with ATRAC front is about all you need in our trucks. IFS steers very little with a locked front locker :p
How about a trutrac gear driven limited slip ? i think in cocnert with that ATRAC it might be nearly as good as a locker but steer better.
