I don't doubt that a shiny new box is the best thing since sliced bread, but it isn't in my 80's future at these prices, unless completely unavoidable.

Yes, the weak Yen helps us USD buyers, but ~$1200 is a whole lot of money for me to spend on something that just has a little seal leak. Not that ~$1200 in and of itself is a catastrophic amount, but it's more than I want to spend on this right now. I'm Yankee/Scots frugal.

I'm psyched for people that are able to get a new box with the upgraded shaft and arm. It sounds like a great time to buy due to exchange rates, an opportunity to get one while they are still available, and also gain the benefit of a new, perfect part to improve function.

For my part, I'm buying a used steering box from a 'mud member and a rebuild kit (Toyota parts from Japan, benefitting from the exchange rate). I'll weld in the Delta plates, and install the used box, then reseal my original as a spare. If stars align, and I find a super deal, maybe I'll even rebuild with a 105 shaft and arm. Hopefully this works out and I'm not being penny wise, pound foolish.

Again, thank you for the information, perspectives, guidance, and terrific discussion.
Many members are running used resealed steering boxes and are perfectly happy !
And leak free many years later including me.

I have twisted two 80 series sector shafts. Both from impact to a front wheel.
1st time, I slid off a greasy clay forestry road into a ditch at 30mph
2nd, hit a washout on a trail, also at similar speeds.

I don't see how hydro assist would prevent that?
That’s why I said “theoretically”. The hydraulic cylinder provides excellent, to the point of feeling numb, steering system stabilization.

@Outsane was the steering box leaking from that o-ring where it was painted red?
I believe it was leaking, I didn't see it leak myself. I just don't see how it's good practice to paint a sealing surface this way.

The hydro takes a lot of the strain off the sector shaft induced by big tires and rocky conditions.
But nothing going to help if you’re running into fixed objects at 30 MPH.

100% that should not be painted. I work in automotive and we spend a ridiculous amount of time masking. When you see stuff like this it just screams rush job.

Impex just canceled my order.
Did you get an email saying the order was suspended and when you clicked through you had to accept the shipping date?

My email said no reply within 5 days would auto cancel the order and there’s a high risk that email goes to your junk folder.

I just checked again and for now mine still shows “processing” with the 7/30 delivery date.

Anybody receive an additional customs and duties fee after their parts shipped from Japan? I ordered two new oem 80 series birfields, shipped via fedex from Japan. Like a week later I got a letter in the mail from fedex with an additional invoice for $34 and some change. Is this normal? I’ve bought a ton of stuff like this in the past and this is the first time I’ve had to pay extra after a part was delivered.
Yeah every now and then I get hit with extra customs fees. Happened with an exhaust and intercooler from AU and some wheels I just ordered from Italy. Usually only more expensive orders

My $0.02, I'd hit the deck for a new 80 box if needed vs. Redhead or WTOR 'rebuilds'. I had WT rebuild a minitruck box for the 40 some years ago and it was seeping in no time. Once the seep open up into a full fledged spring I got a quote from Redhead and it shocked me. I hit the deck for the rebuild TEQ kit and rebuilt the box myself and was out $60 and my time. I found new ball bearings online from somewhere and replaced them, and the box has been fine for a couple of years now. Lesson learned, its not rocket science and I'd rather deal with my own failure that paying someone a lot of coin and dealing with their failure.

The USD to YEN situation is definitely an interesting one, this is a no brainer compared to sending in a core to redhead(quoted $1436 for 105+tap). Looks like purchase to arrival time of about 2 months?
My only hesitation is - Would a new box need to be opened up to tap it for hydro assist or can this be done with a never opened box?

Definitely should be opened up for tapping, some people will drill and tap with a magnet. I don't trust it.

Thanks for confirming my suspicion.

What is involved with “opening” that might mess up one’s rationale for the new box in the first place? Asking for a friend :grinpimp:

Looks like my 105 Steering box is now at IMPEX and ready to ship, as well as everything else I ordered at the time. Ordered June 26, and in stock August 2, a few days after they said it would.

Does anyone know where I could buy a seal kit with all of the o-rings, Teflon seals, etc?
Come to think of it, I have a OEM seal kit that I need to get rid of. PM me if you're interested

I believe you, but I read about and see videos of people doing what they call a rebuild. Are you saying this is properly called a reseal, not a rebuild? And what is the nuance? The balls or is there more to it? Genuinely trying to educate myself. I'd rather buy the parts and do the work to save hundreds, but not if it is just a waste of money.

I filled out the quote form at Redhead, and am waiting to hear back. I'll look up West Texas Offroad. Redhead don't show any in stock, so it is probably a rebuild of my box. New is an option, but I'd rather not spend that much if it is avoidable.
I agree with you, resealing is not the same as rebuilding. Even though you're stopping the leaks with new seals and o rings, how are you accounting for mechanical worn out parts? Technically this is a gearbox for all intents and purposes, and things wear down over time. So I'm curious, how is resealing a gearbox the same as rebuilding?

Its funny you ask this just as I am searching for it. I've gotten as far as to know its called a "sliding yoke sub-assembly". Unsure of exact part #s, but seems like something that you'd want to do while in there. If anyone knows I would also appreciate it.
