I have searched the threads dealing with the steering box.
But all jump to the difficult part of rebuilding the box.

I need to swap my leaking steering box with a new one.

I have the replacement steering gear, pitman arm and the universal yolk. As well as all nuts and bolts.

I want to understand the procedure of removing and installing the new gear box.

Here is my understanding:

1. Disconnect pitman arm from relay rod
2. disconnect high and low hydraulic hoses
3. remove two sliding yolk bolts (how do I slide if off?)
4. unbolt four bolts that holding the box to the frame
5. drop it down?

The step I am not sure about is how to undo the sliding yolk from the intermediate shaft
The FSM wants me to disassemble the steering column and pull the intermediate shaft out first. But I don't want to go that route.

Yup! Just did it a few weeks ago. You need to remove bolt "34" in figure 2. I did this step last as it was easier to move the box forward than to slide the yoke back.

Mike,
The 34 is the torque number (34 nm)
If I undo the yoke, and I undo the 4 bolts of the steering gear, where do I put it?
I am guessing that the yoke will be trapped between the steering box and the intermediate shaft.
The steering box is heavy so I need to know what will happen when I undo the four bolts holding it to the frame. Will it be hanging on the yoke until I whack it off the intermediate shaft?

I prefer to undo the yoke from the intermediate shaft side. Not from the box.

My intension is for the old box to come out with both the pitman arm and the yoke still attached to it. would that be a problem with clearance?

Dude I know its 34nm, but it was how I described it.
Put what? The steering shaft? The box?
The shaft will be fine hanging there, IIRC it rests on the frame rail. I loosened everything, detached the hoses and let them drain for a day. I totally removed the steering shaft bolt, then started with the box. I left the bottom left bolt in so I could tilt the box back to remove the yoke, then remove the last bolt that you pivoted the box on. The box is heavy and it isn't supported by anything else but the bolts after you remove everything else. I guess I miss spoke or didn't clarify, I removed 3 box bolts to remove the yoke then the last bolt was removed. It's kinda hard for me to explain. :oSorry.

This is what I was looking for. Many thanks!
