I finally observed the leak. It is where the steering shaft enters the back of the steering box. And it has a decent volume. Looks like it has been leaking for a good while given the amount of residue. The rest of the unit is leak free.

Just to confirm, these are the correct P/N's for USA guys with LHD 80s?

105 Steering box for a US model 80 series (left hand drive): 44110-60212
Pitman arm: 45411-60360

Holy moly, Delta ships stuff fast.

My plates arrived today.

Seriously beefy.

Thanks Delta!

Figure we actually are talking about steering on a steering thread with a bunch of relevant information.

Bit of an outlier, really. :smokin:

Yall need to drive one with a new box dude. It’s amazeballs.
I'll 100% second this. @COYS inspired me to purchase a brand new oem box. Mind you absolutely every suspension component is dialed in on my rig, but I can cruise SoCal Freeways at 85 on 35" KM3's and can change lanes with the tip of my finger. It's effortless and drives on rails.

I don't doubt that a shiny new box is the best thing since sliced bread, but it isn't in my 80's future at these prices, unless completely unavoidable.

Yes, the weak Yen helps us USD buyers, but ~$1200 is a whole lot of money for me to spend on something that just has a little seal leak. Not that ~$1200 in and of itself is a catastrophic amount, but it's more than I want to spend on this right now. I'm Yankee/Scots frugal.

I'm psyched for people that are able to get a new box with the upgraded shaft and arm. It sounds like a great time to buy due to exchange rates, an opportunity to get one while they are still available, and also gain the benefit of a new, perfect part to improve function.

For my part, I'm buying a used steering box from a 'mud member and a rebuild kit (Toyota parts from Japan, benefitting from the exchange rate). I'll weld in the Delta plates, and install the used box, then reseal my original as a spare. If stars align, and I find a super deal, maybe I'll even rebuild with a 105 shaft and arm. Hopefully this works out and I'm not being penny wise, pound foolish.

Again, thank you for the information, perspectives, guidance, and terrific discussion.

Put me in that camp. Just moments ago I bought the 105 Steering Box (4411060212) with pitman arm (45411-60360) from IMPEX. As @Nay mentioned, the exchange rates are great right now.

The downside is that IMPEX takes a month or more to ship, and they can come back at you with additional shipping charges.

Eventually, I might reseal and add the 105 shaft to mine to have as a spare. It has 178K on it.
I received a notice from Impex and was to to confirm expected delivery on 7/30. That came with a right to cancel the order in full if I didn’t want to accept the shipping timeline. Can’t complain about that, it’s not like my steering hasn’t been crap for years.

I’ll confirm back on receipt, so far so good.

I also got the 7/30 expected delivery date about a week after I ordered. I have 4 outstanding orders from them that should ship at the same time.

Theoretically, hydro assist would render the 105 sector shaft unnecessary

I have twisted two 80 series sector shafts. Both from impact to a front wheel.
1st time, I slid off a greasy clay forestry road into a ditch at 30mph
2nd, hit a washout on a trail, also at similar speeds.

I don't see how hydro assist would prevent that?

It not 😂

If your hitting sh*t at 30 MPH nothing going to help. 🤣😜🤪

Anybody receive an additional customs and duties fee after their parts shipped from Japan? I ordered two new oem 80 series birfields, shipped via fedex from Japan. Like a week later I got a letter in the mail from fedex with an additional invoice for $34 and some change. Is this normal? I’ve bought a ton of stuff like this in the past and this is the first time I’ve had to pay extra after a part was delivered.

What? Wow. That sucks. How long ago did you place the order? And was there a reason provided as to why it was cancelled?
Thankfully, mine already has a new one installed! Maybe 3 weeks? They just said delayed order and then canceled it. No idea.

I’ve posted this photo before when I rebuilt my box like three years ago. Get the 105 shaft. No sense not to. Here’s how my factory sector shaft came out:

Twisted splines and bent. Could have been a catastrophic failure.
