I think you just take a good condition set of OEM covers to a company that manufactures auto upholstery fabrics, so they can as closely as possible recreate the original. Haven't done it though, so not too certain.

These threads rarely (sadly) ever come to fruition unless it's one of the main vendors here producing something (4+, trail tailor, wagongear, etc....)

This is a familiar story. The driving force for any of this is that it be a money making proposition. The reality from the manufacturer's side is this, if 20% of the people that state they are "definitely in, where do I send my money" actually come through it's a good day. It also takes a whole lot of ground work to get something like this project off the ground.

The dilemma is finding the time to dedicate to such a project when the only time you have is time taken away from an another project that is already making money. We all gotta eat :)

Quite a bit more to it than that. I recently sent cuttings of the greys and browns to a fabric mill in the UK. They are certain they can reproduce them with better modern day fibers and almost a dead on match. 4 of the color fibers would have to be custom made or you'd have to settle for a much darker or lighter fiber. But, if you're going for a dead on color match at these prices, why settle for what's on the spool on their mill? Do it right.

I contacted several fabric mills here and in Canada and they either didn't want to deal with it because the colors match was too complex, or they were almost 3 times the price and required a 3-5000 yard minimum.

The set up was 1000.00 per pattern (X4) and a minimum run of 3000 linear yards per pattern at 13.72 GBP per yard, plus freight.

If they would work with me I'd order 2-500 yards of 2 color patterns, but they all wanted upwards of 77-104.00 a yard at these quantities.

I've contacted the guy in Venezuela and basically he won't sell anything but the door panels and full covers. He doesn't have any source for the grey patterns and his early brown pattern inventory was very limited.

After having a set of the custom tweed covers. I prefer the look and feel over the OEM anyhow.

SMS Auto Fabric has a gray fabric that they said is exact match for 88 FJ62. Its $119/yard. I have been talking to them about door cards, but haven't gotten them a sample yet.

Have pics of the fabric?

I'll take a picture. Haven't held it side by side, because I just got the sample in the mail, but it looks to be correct. I'll take a picture tonight. By the way, SMS Auto Fabrics is in the Portland area.

SMS has the brown for 62s also

I ordered some Chilewich samples a while back; the pattern isn't the same but the overall color scheme was pretty similar. Not an exact match, but would blend very well with the oem brown interior. It's a different kind of material, just throwing it out there in case someone found it useful

I'm going to order a yard of the gray SMS for patches. Ouch.

I have some Schoeller Keprotec gray fabric for when I need to recover an entire truck's worth of seats.
