I have a Haynes manual for my 70 (9/69) FJ 40. Is it worth my effort to find the FSM and the engine OEM as well? I looked through old forums and the links that were there did not help. I also looked on ebay and found nothing. How important are these and where can I find them??

The OEM FSM is very useful, and came in handy during the engine rebuild of my 7/69. There is one listed on Ebay now. Good luck.

ther used to be several FSM's available for download from birfield.com, but it appears that site is kaput. PM me your address and I'll send you a copy of the '71 FSM on CD.

What are you doing to search on ebay? Can find the Haynes, F engine oem, various FSMs, but still not finding the '70 FSM. Thanks for the heads up.

I use Ebay Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 Parts and Accessories to search. It was item # 370050499825. It seems a little $$, but has been reprinted in spiral form though. I think you are looking for the Chassis and Body Manual 1968-1971. SOR.COM #221-41, $35.00, and F engine Manual 1968-1974, #221-01B, $25.00. You have to pay a box and shipping charges which are a bit steep, but they have it and ship it to your home. I hope this helps. Good luck!

The Toyota Body and Chassis Repair Manual 1969-1971 Land Cruiser FJ40 publication # is 98041. It still may be available from Toyota.

Why buy one:

1. quality of images in downloads is poor (scanned with no grayscale it seems)
2. downloads are PDFs of images - not searchable
3. printing the FSM from the download will cost toner & paper
4. downloading of copyrighted material is ethically & legally questionable
5. can't flip through it
6. grease on the keyboard & monitor is not nice

pony up the cash for the originals - it's well worth it.

I have both original and scanned FSM's; and I much prefer the scanned. Print out just the pages you need to use for the job, take only them instead of a full manual to where you are working, no worries about getting the manual all greasy, throw used pages away when done.

I dont find it ethically or legally questionable at all.

My printed manual states:

"This book may not be reproduced or copied, in whole or in part, without the written permission of Toyota Motor Corporation"

I suppose RMC theft is not a problem for people with no ethics or morals, either.

You can't buy these from Toyota anymore. I bought mine from Spectre offroad.

Personally, I don't really think its needed. I thought it would have more information, but, its really not all that great IMO. I think its just cool to have since its an OEM manual.

I don't do ebay, so I took a couple boxes of stuff to a couple here who sell for you and take 20%. Along with mostly model AA ford and vintage motorcycle stuff were a toyota F engine fsm from I think '66 and a 2F fsm . The guy called Sat night and said they were going on that night. So, I'm guessing they're on there someplace. They call their business 'grandma tolly's store' or some such nonsense. there is no reserve. Hope you find it.

The 1971 FSM has no copyright notice, therefore by law it is in the pubic domain. That is why people can legally sell copies of it on eBay.

MAybe you should learn some facts and law before tossing out accusations.

no accusations, my 1994 printed manual has this copyright notice, my facts are straight.

i was just highlighting the hypocrisy that stealing (especially media content) from big companies is accepted whilst stealing from small companies is deplored.

i didn't mean to upset those who are legally trading manuals. in principle, my using the quoted comment is also violating the copyright ;)

funny enough, in Switzerland it is legal to download copyrighted content, but illegal to share it. i utilize this loophole extensively, but still bought the printed Toyota manuals, albeit used off eBay.

Why not buy them.. they are cheap.

Repair Manual CHAS/BODY FJ40 98041 $22.66
Repair Manual CHAS/BODY FJ55 98040 $24.75
Owners Manual 96161 $15.95
