Those are pretty cool. I try to support our Land Cruiser community first so I will probably get some from wits end.

Thanks for that. I used to really like silicone. Until it failed and/or weeped. That was it for me. I had 40k on a Samco PHH before it burst on me.

I go back and forth between Mud and TacomaWorld. A little different audience.

Me to since I have a Taco as well and there is a big difference that I noticed from the two forums as well.

I work at a mom and pop retail and just live the buy local, live local mantra and try to do the same when it come to my hobbies. For an example I could buy all my OEM parts online and maybe save 20% but I would much rather support Onur with his local Land Cruiser Parts business. Plus I have a awesome friend now with the same passion I have for Land Cruisers and I can pick his Land Cruiser filled brain when I have a question, and have a beer with sometime if he wasn't such a workaholic. Wits end is not local to me but we have a fellow Mud brother that is making new parts for our 25 year old dinosaurs and I want to support anyone doing that and living their dreams. Sorry for the rant, off my soap box.

OK 255 mile update on the new 1FZ-FE. Remember I am still playing nice since it is still being broken in. Power is very strong and comes on a lot quicker. Not even trying to race and it leave the line so smooth and fast. My drive to work I go over two highway speed large hills. I would have to turn the OD off to maintain my 75mph speed. It now goes over them with OD on at 2800 rpm like a champ. It does sound a little louder taking off but quiets down around 2k rpm. Mileage update, remember engine braking in. Old MPG 14.3 new 13.6 so I think it will stay the about the same once it breaks in. I do have to run Mid grade but that no biggie since Robbie said I can run regular if Mid is not available while Overlanding.

The last update was Saturday...

In my mind Tacoma World is a more aggressive crowd for whatever you're into. I'm not sure that it's a younger group, but the attitude seems to be more extreme. I come over here and it's more relaxed. People don't get into "shouting" matches (at least not that I've seen) here, but you can light a match and watch it burn over there. I've never been to the Facebook Tacoma World, but I here things get toasty on a regular basis. I don't have Facebook. However, I find both of these forums have a wealth of information. I've learned a bunch there and here.

Any thoughts as it 'breaks in'?
Curious if you driven s/c 80 (a non-Robbie 4.6 HC) and can compare?

Just ran across your build thread I like what you’re doing.

Where are you located on the front range? There’s a handful of us 80’s guys and Toyota overlanders that are part of horsetooth 4 wheelers (norco TLCA club). If you are in the Loveland foco area you should come out to a meet.

Thanks for the invite. When is your next meet? I am in Boulder but I am in Rising Sun Offroad Club. I would love to come to a meet and get to know some of the folks up there and maybe plan a multi club run. We could even see if the CO Springs guys were up to it.

I have driven in an 80 with a 6.0l, SC 4.5l, 4.6l and a stock 4.5l. I would put power in that order. I feel the 4.6l is more responsive and very very close in power to a SC 4.5l. With that said if I had an OBDII system I would have done an SC 4.6L. With a SC comes problems and higher ware and premium fuel. so I am very happy now that I was not able to do the SC. I am not a lead foot kind of driver. I just wanted reliability, highway passing speed and power for the mountain passes and I feel so far that I got exactly that. I am very happy with this engine and the work PowderPig did.

My biggest complaint about the 80 besides cup holders was I felt like it had 25yr old power. Newer vehicle have gained so much over the years and we have gotten used to it. After I bought this 80 and started throwing cash at it I really wondered if I made a big mistake and should have just bought a brand new 4Runner, I even test drove them a few times. Remember I could buy a fully loaded one for $40k and I was over that in this 80 at the time and had not done the engine yet. I loved the drive but hated the front window view. This week while commuting to work I really feel I have that kind of driving back and it does not feel like an 25yr old drive it feels like a brand new vehicle. I really have the 80 I dreamed of owning 25 years ago and never thought I would be able to afford when I was in High School.

I will give a more detailed update at 1k miles and get to do some trail rides. Now I need to get some more armour, roof rack, lights, comms and storage system done this winter.

I’m focused on my 1997 at the moment. Still not certain if I want to spend the money on a Robbie build or if I want to go V8. You’re my Robbie data point. He is not cheap. With 170k on the motor, the rebuild is going to need to happen. And, I just want more HP.

As I said before if you are looking for HP as your number one thing I would be looking at a V8. Either way a rebuilt 4.6 or a 6.0 swap even if it is used is not for the fant walleted. Remember you get what you pay for, I wanted the best built motor and install so I went to Robbie.

So is this motor just port and polished and bored out? Or does it have different cams or something?

Are you going to be at the next Rising Sun meeting in December and if so are you going to bring your 80? Just interested in looking at the quality of the install. Obviously there probably isn't a whole lot to look at in terms of the engine itself basically just a dressed up 4.5L but just curious of the overall quality. This is something I am definitely interested in doing in the future to my 80. I don't need 500hp just good solid reliable engine with a little extra behind it. Plus I have spare hoses and belts and other parts for my 4.5 now, it would be great to still be able to use those parts if needed on the trail.

Cheers

Answer: turbo kit. It's a mid that can be up graded over time hence easier on the wallet
There’s a thread on here where a guy is putting a turbo kit together for the 80. I’m kinda stoked about it. Can we maintain OBD2 with a new computer like Haltec?
