And who would want to hassle with sourcing and making veggie diesel? Pull me up to the pump y'all. Other than that it sounds like a good idea and could be an interesting car to drive/own.

Interesting yes, but my Corolla gets better mileage.

And probably gets there faster and in better comfort. Plus, it's probably cheaper to maintain.

And it doesn't have a 24-gallon veggie-oil tank taking up the entire trunk.

Can any of you guys in ABQ take a look at this one?

Shawn,
Are you looking to buy a built truck?
-Mike-

i was just casually looking and found this one built. my understanding is, the cost of a built truck is usually about truck price plus 1/2 of cost of mods. that makes it more reasonable for me to get one. i can do the mods, but will pay full price. of course i'd add my own touches and preferences to either modded or unmodded.

i would put on 6" lift and armor, so this one has that already.

Except for the gearing it sounds like a turn key wheeler. ARB in the front. Steel bumper in the rear.

I know the built part is tempting, but I would find one that meet your criteria of condition, and from there accessories should be considered.

Not that a 248k truck will die on you, but remember that the 248K isn't just on the engine and tranny, it'll show on the interior and the like.

The other nice thing about the 80's.. is there seems to be armor/lifts for sale all the time. So if you find a really good cruiser around 6-7k.. I think you could easily find front/rear/sliders/lift for the 3-4k range, and you end up with a better condition vehicle to start, and possibly one that hasn't been abused at all yet.

Don't feel bad. I'm starting to seriously consider it as well. Danise really want's a vehicle with 3rd row seating (not as her primary vehicle though). And I'd really like to have a vehicle with more modern creature comforts than what a 60 has to offer.

I'm worried that I'll have a harder time selling my 60 for a reasonable price than I will finding a good 80. Hopefully the lack of rust and nice paint job will improve my odds. But then the salvage title and 267K mile might negate that.

I like slim's idea of finding a newer (96-97) lower mileage unit in great condition and building it up rather than an older model that already has all the goodies, especially if it doesn't have exactly what you want in terms of lift and armor. But, my idea of wheeling is much more mild than what you are planning for.

I think a '93 has the 3FE, so no head gasket problem. It's a dog, but it's a 3FE. If you don't mind going slow it looks like it definitely has potential.

Dan drives a 93 so it would have the 1FZFE

Confirmed - I also have a '93 with the 1FZFE. The last year for 3FE was '92. The 1FZ will likely need a head gasket at some point, but I think it's a far superior motor to the 3FE. Probably 50% more power (I'm remembering 212 hp vs. about 150, if that).

I think the truck Shawn was looking at looked great, all except the high miles.

I can see both sides of the story. It is potentially cheaper to buy a built truck, but that could also increase the chances that it's been abused by the previous owner. (Not that I've ever driven my truck hard.)

It would be great to find a low-miles 80 and build it, but potentially more expensive. Those of you with welders and skills could save some bucks by making some accessories yourself.

I will say - I have enjoyed my 80 more than I thought possible. I have driven an '86 4X4 truck, a '93 4Runner, and '87 FJ-60, and I am most impressed with the 80. It's got creature comforts, adequate power, and wheels with the best of them.

Just for reference - I paid $7,600 for mine about 4 years ago with 140,000 miles. It does seem like they are getting cheaper lately, and some people still find them with relatively low miles.

For those of you new to 80s, look at the Slee website. They used to have a section for newbies to 80s and 100 series. I'm sure it's still there. It will give you some things to watch for.

Keep us posted as you shop!
