I think a '93 has the 3FE, so no head gasket problem. It's a dog, but it's a 3FE. If you don't mind going slow it looks like it definitely has potential.

91-92=FJ80 with the 3FE. Underpowered by anyone's gauge. None will have axle lockers.
................ None will have FF rear or rear disk brakes. 15" wheels

93-94=FJZ80 with the 1FZ-FE engine. 212hp all years that it was produced. 16" alloys.
.......... AFM fuel management. Forced induction is problematic.
.......... F&R diff locks available as an option. (~7%)
.......... Most will have rear disks and FF rear axles.
.......... Most will have leather, 3rd row, and the other options that are seen on 80-Series.
.......... A442F tranny. (aka the "bus" transmission)

95=FZJ80. Front air bags. Pre-OBD-II. A343F transmission.
............... MAF sensor for fuel management so forced induction is less troublesome.
............... All will have FF rear axles. Most will have leather,
............... 3rd row seating and the other options that are seen on 80-Series.
............... Revised interior, mainly the dashboard.

96-97=FZJ80. Full OBD-II. (Otherwise, same as 95)

There are many other differences but nothing substantial between the model years. Do not overlook the LX450s. These are the same as the LC except they have side plastic cladding which can be an issue if you decide to de-flare. I would jump on an LX in a heartbeat if one came available.

Shawn,

There is one thing about 80-Series lifts that you should know. There is a lot of misconception out there and a lot of misinformation. Mostly from guys taking short cuts with doing a proper lift. First of all you have to know that lift is comprised of 2 things... the increased height from putting on taller coil springs, and decreased height from putting on weight; winch, bumpers, sliders, drawers, etc. The end result is the "lift" that I am referring to below.

You can do a 2-3" lift with just springs and bushings for caster correction and not much else. Stock length shocks (Toyota or OME) means droop is the same so you don't gain much articulation until you start changing to longer shocks.

You can do a 4" lift but now you are looking at more aggressive caster correction, longer shocks so longer brake lines and other things that dangle when the axle drops. You are looking at a DC front DS because the angles are wrong for standard unis. You are looking at panhards because the body is off-set over the axles. You'll want bigger tires so you will need the steering stabilizer and probably the HD tie rods and relay rods. All of this is part of the Slee "kit" but a LOT of guys do not buy everything but they will still say they have a 4" lift kit.

Same story with the Slee 6" lift kit except you have to add the longer front control arms to re-center the front axle and put in 10* of caster ($1,000 just for the Slee front arms) Again, there are guys that slap on 6" springs and call it good. The truck will drive like crap and will be "unsafe at any speed" but they will insist "the truck drives fine... a little twitchy, but nothing I can't handle." Bull s***.

So in summary, if you are looking at built trucks you need to determine if they are "built" or "thrown together." I think you probably knew most of this but you might think that guys would say they just added taller springs and not claim it was a complete kit. They don't do that though.

i'm getting my 80 education! most of these things i had heard, but didn't listen to too closely, so it's good to hear it again. thanks guys.

i figured i can make several of the parts to armor it. the lift i wasn't going to skimp on, but i see many do, so i'll be on the look out for that. i'm not in any hurry, and only stumbled onto this one, so i thought i'd ask. glad i did!

Partially built 80 in SLC. ksl.com - KSL Car Classifieds

181,000 miles.
1996 $6,000 list price at a dealer. Probably $4-5k out the door with a little dealing.
Front ARB with winch

There is a link to this one in the 'Mud classifieds. I am sure you can find one of the Wassatch guys to check it out.

This is probably rougher than you were planning to get but it is a newer model and has a lot less miles than the other one for a lot less money.

They have to give those ugly green ones away. If that one was Moonglow pearl it would be $15,000. :D

funny. i saw that one in autotrader too with less pics.

Mike makes a good point - a well put together 4-6" lift is worth a *lot* more than a 2-3" lift. With the 2-3" lift you're stuck with dinky 33" tires. Also, getting a vehicle from the south means (generally) less rust.

funny. i saw that one in autotrader too with less pics.

There are a few 80s here in the IH8MUD classifieds. Some are built, some are stock. If you could swing the $25k Christo has his SAS 100-Series for sale.

I'm dying to know how that baby runs on the hwy (using AT tires) - death wobbles, bump steer, etc.

Christo says the front end is all 80-Series with custom made longer axle shafts. He had 2 sets custom made so the truck has a spare set of front axle shafts. He converted the rear to 6-lug so it uses the same wheels on both ends (100-Series is 5-lug)

It comes with a HAM radio too! :D

Shawn,
If you are interested in a S/C truck then this is a candidate:
1996 Toyota LandCruiser with TRD Kazuma SuperCharger.
Mileage: 149K
$7000 because of history Theft recovery

The owner is well respected in the 80 forum and I know him to be an honest person. He has it listed in the Classifieds here on IH8MUD. This is a stocker with good maintenance history but no off-road accessories.

You guys looking for an 80 better get your ducks in a row, get your money ready and be prepared to pull the trigger. There are some deals out there for those that don't take months to make a decision (no offense Mark).

Stock '97, white with gray guts. No diff locks, 206000 miles. Seller was asking $2,700. sprocket3 bought it for $1,850 and drove it the 100 miles back home. Said it drives fine and has no issues other than a few dings.

Found out a few minutes ago that this is a New Mexico truck. Check the tags.

That was a ridiculous smoking deal. I need to get off my arse and actively work on selling my 60. Anybody out there interested? Beno? Most of you have seen it. No rust. Stock. Fairly new paint job with Toyota Cashmere Beige (4M9). Probably should get it in the main Classified Section.

That was a great deal... heck, if it would have been here, I would have jumped at it, but I wouldn't expect anything like that to come up on a regular basis. The only other times I have seen a price like that has been damaged roll-over salvage vehicles.

Ya never know and if you are sleeping then you'll never see these deals. It was posted 6 days ago in the 80-Section and the guy bought it 4 days later so there was time for those that are paying attention. One guy was like "send me pics.... I'll try to see it next weekend... ". The guy that bought it called, jumped in the car and went to buy it right then and there.

Local 80 for-sale report

Local ads in the AutoTrader:

Called on this one
No Diff Lock
Current owner has had it since December. He thinks it started life in Texas because of the Owner's manual and other docs in glovebox.

A new one showed up today as well. No answer when I called.

It is not a good idea to ask them if the truck has lockers because 99% of POs will not know and if you tell them how to find out and then don't buy the truck then the seller will soon catch on that they have a desirable option and the "deals" will be harder to find.

You can look for the axle code on the white VIN plate in the driver side door jam. Just ask the seller for all the numbers except for the VIN and you can figure it out and they probably will not realize that you are looking for a specific option. It will have the color, trim, and axle code. A292 is an unlocked truck and A294 has the F&R axle locks.

Once you have a potential candidate, then you will want to look for the switch (a few have had their locking axles removed) and the electric actuators on the pumpkins. Again, this can be done without tipping your hand. The last thing would be to verify they work during a test drive. If it were me, I wouldn't worry too much about testing them because you will know you have all the bits to make it work once you have done the visual check. If you *do* test them, then don't be surprised if they fail to engage due to atrophy after ~15 years of never being used. We have seen a handful of trucks that have had the rotary switch unplugged or the axle wiring harnesses removed. Speculation is that Mom or Dad turned the switch and found they could not steer the truck, panic set in, and the truck went straight to the dealer to get neutered.

FYI, that 2-tone truck (beautiful color BTW) has a replacement front bumper and it doesn't appear they painted it... still primered, and the antenna is broken. Both are easy fixes but good negotiation points.

Yep. I can't get too serious about this until I've sold my 60, which I haven't gotten serious about either. But I want to keep my eyes open just in case another one of those $2,700 deals comes along.

Received though the website.
======================

1983 fj60 for sale. 232,000 miles on this stock NM truck. The truck has been maintained, but it still needs some work. I have recently replaced the fuel pump, water pump (and hoses), belts, front driver's seat, front seat belts, windshield and the starter. The truck has some typical rust (wheel wells), but not very much. The truck leaks oil from most of the common spots (rear main, oil pan, P/S pump, front axle seals), but doesn't leak any coolant. Second gear in the tranny is a bit problematic, but it functions. 4-hi and 4-low work very well. It is an old truck. $1500 obo. (505) 988-8961 or granattydred@hotmail.com. The truck is in Santa Fe.
