Just got back from backpacking the canyon again.😊 Being up there jogged a couple more memories. @Otis

1. I remembered how the temperature dropped so quickly that day that the ambient moisture in the air suddenly froze, and we had flakes of snow decending out of a clear blue sky…at 2pm!
2. I remember that Paul Enos/Elvira tipped over his flatbed mini truck at the top of the last falls. As we gathered up his belongings I noted that the case of beer he had been carrying on deck was colder than the beer that was in his ice chest!
3. I remember it was too cold to sleep (19*) and Marlin’s wife Chris spent a good part of the night making us hot chocolate.
4. I remember that Marlin graciously agreed to act as winch point and deadman for everyone descending the last of the falls. One of the 40s took an exceptionally long time driving off the falls ( I think there were photo opps involved) As the weight of the dangling 40 kept pulling harder and harder on Marlin’s suspension, suddenly the canyon walls shook with an explosion. The extreme compression caused one of Marlin’s tires to pop off the bead!
5. 11 vehicles started on the run, but only 10 made it to town. Tim Schilling drove his sprung-over 40 from Palos Verdes, and proceeded to buckle his S bend steering relay rod on the first falls going up. Marlin straightened it and welded on a gusset, but as a group we had already expressed concern about the fact that Tim was the only one who was running a factory PTO, which we weren’t sure would be safe enough, considering the vertical challenge. With much angst all around, we convinced Tim to turn back.

@65swb45, do you happen to recall who made the roll bar shown on your truck? I believe mine is still sporting the same one!
The rollbar was in the truck when I bought it, so I cant be sure. But the design is the same as the Smittybilt WC80.

Smittybilt made two Windshield Cage kits for the FJ40, the WC80 and the WC81. The WC81 had the familiar front hoop that went from door to door. The WC80 used two side hoops and a forward spreader bar in order to clear the wiper motors of the pre-75 models.

Something tells me that @77CJ5 isnt particularly interested in answering questions.☹️

Sorry these aren't from 1979, but they were scanned from a 35mm camera photo.

Spring, 1993, near Alma. I repainted the truck a couple years earlier. The last 2 snow-bashing pix are on the road up to Mt. Bross near Alma. I'm still running the same KYB Gas-adjust shocks today that you can see in the front fender, in the 3rd photo. Not sure they will ever fail...
