FJ40 Half Doors / Barn Doors?

Interesting. When I ordered parts this week from SOR, I referred to the back doors as "Barn Doors" and they were quick to correct me, telling me that while many people may call them that, the actual correct name for them was 1/2 doors.
What’s funny is that they’re not half doors though. Since they work with an upper hatch, they are in fact ‘full doors’ 🤣

While I completely understand the desire to stay with OEM, you may also want to consider that City Racer sells a nice modern version that is plug-'n-play. An added bonus, is that they don't suddenly fail causing the rear latch to bang into your head, as do the OE ones when they aren't tightened sufficiently. ;)

Hmm. Good point! I have a spare set from my Toyota Sienna. I wonder if they would work, or if they are too long? I'll have to measure and see.

I hope everyone is having a good 4th of July! I fired up the grill, cooked some burgers and hot dogs for the family, and then followed it up with Bluebell ice cream! Yummy!

LOL! Thank you. Although I was an IT Manager before being forced to retire due to disability (Neurological aka brain, + 25 other surgeries), I appreciate all the help I can get. My hands and brain aren't what they used to be. And to be honest, over the years I've always thought it was kind of an a--hole move when at work you would ask someone a question and they KNEW the answer but would tell you to "look it up". Some of those answers took hours to dig through all the 'layers of the onion' to find it when someone could have just said "Hey, I ran into that myself, here's where I found the solution".

I've run into a bit of that here, unfortunately and disappointingly, and I will NEVER do that to someone else, nor will I give snide or snarky responses to a question, especially to a newbie (which I've also received). When I see those, I think "egomaniac" that needs a good kick in the balls since they don't care to be a helpful member of the community. But that's just me. Perhaps I'm wrong. I'm able to admit when I am wrong. I was wrong in October of 1992. See there! LOL!

That sounds like the price for a complete body. The tailgate was $800.

Yeah, I obviously looked at the wrong thing. That storage tailgate is pretty slick. I wonder if it would damage it or mess anything up if I mounted the needed parts to still have my spare tire on the back and latch to the tailgate? I would think that would be doable.

Thanks for the assist. Us new guys are not as adept at finding things as you are, but we will get there.

So you graduated from Auburn University? We were stationed in AL for a couple of years and one of my closest friends went to Auburn. Are you going to mark your calendar and celebrate the day Nick Saban retired each year as a holiday?

The spare tire carrier mounts to the left or right of the tailgate and latches below the tailgate so you should be fine.

No problem. You might read the FAQ at the top of this forum. There's a plethora of subjects covered in there that, if nothing else, make for good reading. It might help you get your bearings around the 40 series and almost any subject you can think of is covered. Obviously it won't address every situation but it's a great resource. It's also helpful to keep everything (questions, etc.) within your main build thread to the extent possible. A lot of us do that but obviously many don't. It will definitely help you find the information later much easier. Just FWIW.

Yes, Auburn undergrad. To be honest I wasn't particularly fond of Saban when he started but didn't mind him so much the last few years. Can't stand the majority of Alabama sidewalk fans though; but every large state school in the SEC has that problem.

Anyone have this?
I have got a 1971 FJ40 with a build date of Dec '70.

The rear short swing doors, what some people call the barn doors, on the right side (passenger side) door on the inside there is a latch you have to pull up on to open the door. When you are not pulling up on it, the pin fits down into a small metal piece held in place on the bed with either 2 screws or 2 bolts. I am needing that piece.

So you can see exactly what I'm talking about, if you click on this link, it is number 38 highlighted with blue (and they don't have it): Rear Swing Out Door - 1958-1974 40 Series (Page 133) - Specter Off-Road - https://www.sor.com/cat/133

Sometimes if you use Toyota’s Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) to find the part number it will first allow you to quickly determine if the part is NLA, then, assuming it is NLA, you can go over to your favourite search engine and plug I that part number to see if you get any hits on EBay and whatnot

I tried it, but it wants the frame number which I don't have because it is at the paint and body shop. I tried CCOT, SOR, City Racer, BTB, and I'm waiting to hear back from Classic Cruisers. I'm hoping someone out there has one they can spare.

It doesn't look like it would be too difficult to make if you're unable to find one.

I'm not aware of a frame number or VIN requirement to use the EPC. Just need the date of manufacture.

The frame # should be on your title.
