Some people call the rear doors barn doors, and others call them half doors.

I have a 1971 (build date Dec '70) FJ40 and the right rear 1/2 door has cancer at the bottom. Someone here in the forums reached out and said they have a pair from their 1976 FJ40. Can anyone tell me if the rear 1/2 doors on a '76 FJ40 are the same as the 1/2 doors on a '71 FJ40, or if they are a different size?

Thank you so much for the helpful information. This site has been a BIG help!

Hmmm. So if they came on the person's '76 soft top, they came from a different year model? Is there a measurement or something I could have them do in order to tell if they are a match to mine?

There are no federal market 1976 soft tops...if there were, it would have a tail gate, not barn doors.
If its a general market cruiser, there is no telling what your guy is actually trying to sell you.

Thank you! Great to know. Maybe I'm better off getting a door skin made for ambulance doors and cutting it down to fit mine.

I would strongly recommend the Aqualu storage tailgate. I love mine and it is made out of aluminum so it will never rust.

Oh WOW! I appreciate it, but Over $6,400 dollars for it is WAY out of my universe. I only paid $5k for the whole rig.

And now I might need a new couch, because when I saw the price I think my butt bit a hole through the couch. Ouch!

That sounds like the price for a complete body. The tailgate was $800.

"Somebody" is already wearing glasses, no line progressive, and getting old SUCKS! I'll look again, but on my cell phone screen that's what I thought I saw. I'll look again tomorrow on a laptop screen.

AFAIK:
Barn doors are 74 and older rear lower doors that work with a lift up hatch on the hard top. They stay on the tub when the top is off.
Half doors are front doors that have been cut down or are aftermarket ‘soft doors’ usually in use when the top is off.
Ambulance doors are 75 and newer rear full height doors that connect to the tub and the hard top. You’re left to find a fill in solution when the top is off.

Interesting. When I ordered parts this week from SOR, I referred to the back doors as "Barn Doors" and they were quick to correct me, telling me that while many people may call them that, the actual correct name for them was 1/2 doors.

While I completely understand the desire to stay with OEM, you may also want to consider that City Racer sells a nice modern version that is plug-'n-play. An added bonus, is that they don't suddenly fail causing the rear latch to bang into your head, as do the OE ones when they aren't tightened sufficiently. ;)
