FJ40 - Driving at night with flat glass

Use polarized glases for driving? maybe yellow tints for night time driving?

I have a yellow/amber pair of safety glasses that really helps with the glare that comes with night driving.

Ahhh, getting old...

In my experience glare is substantially worse if the windshield is old and is pitted and scratched. Looking through brand new windshield glass is one of life's little pleasures.

I don't know this to be fact, and laws vary by state, but I don't believe it's legal to apply tint to a windshield, except for the top few inches.

At our last local LC get-together a fellow 40 driver and MUD member, @JohnVee, asked me if he was the only one that found the left-right side window reflections annoying. I answered back with a definite "NO!" It seems that the flat glass reflections are rarely talked about so everybody internalizes it and goes around thinking they are the only ones bothered by it. I'm glad to know that it's not just me...and @JohnVee!

Happens to me too. Get suprised at times when a "ghost" vehicle appears out of nowhere and you quickly have to discern if real or refection. I put clear film on my glass except windshield and I think it didn't help with dusk or night reflections.

Glad its being brought up, its a pain at times

DING - DING ------WINNER!!!! Your post is exactly what I was looking for.....I just wanted to make sure it wasn't me or something that some PO did to my rig. Lord knows my 40 has been around the block. Sold in the Rockies, then lived on the East Coast, moved to the West Coast, then-back to East Coast, stayed out in Texas for a few years, now currently residing in GA. And to be more specific for today, my 40 is nestled all warm and comfy in my basement because it was 9 degrees this morning with the wind chill well below zero. And that is on the Fahrenheit scale!

I see!!!!!....No wonder Corey Hart sang about it back in '84!

All windows on mine are tinted except the windshield......I never noticed any weird glare or reflections. Only how much better the vehicle seemed on blazing summer days in AZ.

GA, someone finally mentioned it. I never noticed with my first Cruiser but I was a kid back then. When I first started driving this one it was like the House of Mirrors at the fair. I don't notice it as much now but it's still there and still gets me on occasion. Someone finally said it, you're not alone. It is amazing what the yellow tint glasses do for driving in the dark, I'll have to source another pair.

Yep, I'm just going to make Pease with the reflections and live with them, they are my friend.

or source a set of these:

may try these first:

Although most of my vehicles have tinted windows, I like the way my 40 looks without the tint, thus none has been applied.

Give Pease a chance

I can't say that I even notice. The more alarming thing to me is that with a hard top it sounds like your in a metal drum with some one beating it with a hammer which is y I'm gunna make some removable carpet panels to both insluate against Temp sound and if there's any glare I'm not noticing. You can also get mirrior tent like the early suburbans had. But you cant use a window mounted cb antenna

I thought it was because I was getting old, but I really think the problem is all these new cars with these crazy bright headlights. 30 years ago none of them had these. Like other said keeping the glass clean helps a lot. I even have the problem in my SUV without flat windows. I keep a pack of those windex cleaner wipes, wipe the outside and inside down and it makes a huge improvement.

Yes. I do not like this in my '78 (9/77 build) 40. You are waiting to turn left onto a busy street and it is difficult to process what is real traffic...
Not very safe.

I'm surprised! I really thought the confusing reflections were the result of having my windows tinted. I don't recall noticing them before the tint. I think I noticed it initially because it was a very sunny day. I've since become accustomed to it and it no longer bothers me.

But, if I drove at night, in traffic, I'm sure it would be very confusing.

False reflections of cars never got me too bad, it's the night time reflections of street lights and the glow on the road and such that is weird with the side windows. I guess I got used to it years ago when I started driving and DD the 40, then my 40 set for nearly 6 years and I moved on through a 60 series and my T100. This past summer I got it back into a DD condition, but with a soft top now. I was surprised how bad the glare and reflections were. The brighter headlights definitely do not help the issue. I also have found the glare from my own headlights of the road, illuminates the sag and bends in the rear soft-top window, that then proceeds to dance and flicker and flash back on the rearview mirror and windshield to a point. I keep thinking a car has suddenly come up behind me, or maybe aliens, or it is just plain distracting at other times.

So no, you guys are not alone. I use a 73 International LoadStar dump truck on occasion in the dark to plow with. The side windows are pretty flat on it, the windshield is pretty tore up, but pretty flat and all the glass is clear, no green or blue tint of course just like the factory glass in a 40. Reflections in it at night is really bad too. I'm trying to recall if the 1979 Scout we had growing up was bad, the windows in it were flatter than a 60 series and clear as I recall. Even a 60 series has a little reflection, but just the slight inward slant seems to really deflect it from your vision. If you think about no new cars have flat glass anymore, not even Wranglers, they all tilt inwards to a point. It must have been a big enough issue that it has been designed out. The rear windows of a 40 hardtopped are tilted in for a reason. I suspect to eliminate the reflection of oncoming traffic and lights, otherwise think about the reflection it would make on the windshield.

I actually don't like tinted glass at night, makes me feel totally blind, even at dusk, I hate my pickup out hunting because you can't see very well at dusk while watching for animals moving about. Even worse at night, can't see a thing behind me, backup lights are not bright enough to give me anything while using the mirrors. Our semi new to us 80 series is problematic too at night I feel with the window tint.

I do recall however, most of my early driving with my 40, seems the window was down a lot of the time, winter or summer, either it was hot, or the windows were covered with ice from the inside, so that fixes side window reflection issue.

I've noticed my new polarized prescription sunglasses do strange things when looking through the pre 75 FJ40 side windows, they must be polarized too, because they are full of black dots and make rainbow colors. The tint in my truck makes all shiny surfaces rainbow colored, that is actually pretty distracting too.

Polarized night glasses. They will help. Tinting usually won't help. My next mod is an auto darkening rear view mirror. Since 40's don't have the little switch. At least the ones I have seen.

That mirror looks cool! How will you attach it to your rig? Right to the windshield like the directions? I guess that would be the only way to get the outside temp to work....

Mine came really dark tinted from the PO back in the mid 80's. It did reflect ghost lights a lot. Just made you look twice before moving, Safety feature.
Paper was added later...
