So, good day today. Removed what I believe was an old CB bracket, adjusted the carb to idle better without dieing, and chased some random wires that where connected to a switch. I’m including a picture of the new switch I put in.. but I can’t figure what it does.. it’s wired in to the license plate lights. That’s it. What is this switch for in normal rigs?

PO add on. They do the strangest things. PO rewired the horn on my '77 and put a big black button in the same place as your switch:confused:

A switch to turn off the license plate lights? PO have a questionable profession?:steer:

It is. On my '78 there is an OEM black, plastic hole plug in the hole, so at least you can remove the switch and plug it. Recently there were some for sale in the classifieds here.

Ok, quick trip to test out the new carb setting, and play with speedometer. Still bounces and hums, but I think it’s a bit better. Drove in some undeveloped parts of the development. I must admit playing John Denver somehow made him act better. Lol

So.. installed the original radio and the windshield washer!! But the washer pump looks like it doesn’t work, and no sound comes out of the speaker... and the stalling out is getting worse. One step forward ten back.. :bang::meh:

I consulted my my neighbor, who races 50s cars, about the stalling. After showing him the old fuel filter, he says my tank might be rusted out.... so.... I’m tearing that apart. The tank looks almost new from first appearances. And look at that original paint!!!!!!

Ok... I don’t know when... but that’s a new tank as far as I can tell... it’s full of fuel, but if I take off the float and look around... it’s practically spotless.... but I have rust in the lines. Hmmm.... next is blow the lines. See what happens..

You may want to check the other end of the speedo cable ? There is a drive gear that may have issues. Not as easy getting to as the cluster ?

Try pulling the speedo cable from the transfer case end and spinning it with a drill while watching the instrument cluster. If you can replicate the problem, you know its not the speedo gear

If the tank is really new but you have rust in the fuel filter then that might be the exact reason why the PO put in a new tank. Old tank rusted out and the tank was replaced. The PO failed to check out the rest of the fuel system and flush it also. Like people have said PO do some of the damndest things. Anyway things are looking good and don't get discouraged. As a 40 owner the trip is is supposed to be enjoyable as getting to where you are going. Don't forget to slow down and smell the roses.
