Extra bummer. :frown:

What are the other projects?

What are the other projects?

Other projects are snorkel install, steering gearbox rebuild with hydro assist, finish the rear bumper and Fuel can swing out, cut down and mod the roof rack. I would also like to do another C-N-T on the 62 axle housing I picked up. I have never been satisfied with the angle of the pinion after picking up the wrong degree perches. I would also like to finish the rub rails we built last year!!

are that bad .. and are that hard to replace with the engine on Cruiser ?

Not hard to replace with engine in cruiser but yes according to rebuilder they are toast. He said that they were so far out of spec that he was surprised I hadn't burnt a hole on the piston. Stock the injector is supposed to open at 190 BAR and the worst of mine was 87 BAR and the best was 148 BAR.

I would go forward with install and do the injectors later but I have 2 big trips coming up that I am not going to put off. I may have some time first of June to get to this but I would rather not have a rig with a swapped in diesel and little to no road time in it before a backwoods trek for 5 days!

So as of right now its on hold for a bit till I get some time to re-evaluate and research some options on the injectors. :frown:

Here is one of the injectors with damage. Hard to tell in pic but surface between pins is supposed to be flat and this is hammered concave from injector needle!!

Thanks for checking in and I will post up some of the small projects and any other info I come across in regards to the diesel!!

according to that open values ( pressure breaking point of the injector ) are shot .. big bummer .. I like as probably you do too .. do once, do it well.

Hi Chad,

I am hoping that with a basic upgrade on the turbo that I can run 20 psi of boost and get about 170 hp out of the engine. This is close to what Mike is running in his 4BTA and I really like the power that truck puts out.

Ran into a big delemna with the engine and I hate to this but the diesel swap is now on hold till probably June. I ran to a place in Portland called DFISpdx.com today. They ran some test on the injectors and they are completely shot. Initially they had thought that it would be about $250 to repair. Unfortunately these are specific to a few years and were notorious for having issues. Sure enough these were toast and it's a cool $1000 from Bosch for some new ones. That will kill my budget beyond recognition at this point.

So its on to other projects for now and saving my pennies for some new injectors.

I will take some pics of the injectors and post up shortly!

I am currently running 12psi of boost. I'm saving my pennies to send my turbo to Graeme in Australia who will upgrade the innards so I can run 21 psi. At stock boost (which I think is 8psi), the 12H-T puts out ~135 horsepower & 230 ft-lbs. of torque. Graeme dyno tested one hj61 and got 330ft-lbs at the crank and 140 hp at the rear wheels. Don't know what the hp at the flywheel was, though. Gotta love diesels.

Don't get too discouraged about the injectors. Things like this always seem to come up. In the end you'll have new injectors which should last a long time. Is your diesel direct injected or indirect? Good luck.

As an afterthought, if it is direct injected and you want to run veggie oil in the future, they make special injectors that produce a finer mist and can handle the load of heated veggie oil. I forget what they are called, do a search in the diesel section. Don't know if they would fit your engine, but might be something to look into since you are getting new injectors anyways.

Ducks: not sure if its totally necessarry to send your stuff to Austrailia to get built as there are plenty of experts around here that could do the same. Look up Bell turbo in Philomath and talk to Pius. He is (according to local sources) "THE" guy to talk to on turbos and has built some very nice set ups for people all over the NW.

Update on the swap. It is pushed back a bit but I am forging ahead. I have located some injectors for $500 less than originally quoted so with some smooth talking the wife I was able to get the go ahead to get it done. Amazing what $4.25 a gallon gas and 10 mph mentioned in conversation gets you!

Not much to show but the initial tear down has statrted. Also not shown is that with some patience I have been able to procure both a West Texas Off Road rebuilt power steering box that has been ported and a brand new 1.75" by 6" ram with hoses for hydro assist for about 1/2 the cost of retail new!!! Totally stoked on this one.

Collecting the parts:

Front end misc removed. Comes a part surprisingly easy:

Cant wait till the engine bay is cleaned up and some room made on the inner fenders:

Thats it for now. More to come in the next 2 weeks!

congrats ... you found best argument ever .. ! happy you found some better option for injectors .. and start moving in to the swap ..

Mike came by today and we got right to work. I was a bit cold and it took some time to get motivated but today Mike was the project manager and lead! :bounce:

Everyone needs a Mike for a neighbor! In about a hour we had the engine pulled and sitting on the garage floor.

Feeling pretty good about this I kept at some of the small stuff and Mike went to town on the engine mounts on the frame.

I started with the adapter to the tranny and had to do very little work to get it to bolt up to the H55F.

4bd1tswap008-1.jpg

Right now and for this project the tranny is staying put. I will have to clearance a bolt on the cross member to get the tranny to rotate slightly to the passenger side to help clear the adapter to the fire wll and the starter to the frame.

Gotta love SOA rigs. Plenty of clearance on the driveline and for the dual oil filters on the passenger side! :D

Before Mike took off to work on his junk we put the hood on for mock up and found that where the motor is currently sitting that it will be within and inch of final spot as the hood clearance is getting tight. I also have to make provisions for the turbo and later turbo upgrade.

Thats it for today. I hope to get to more on friday but we will see what time will allow. My goal is to have motor mounts fabbed and close to being in on friday and then welded in by Tuesday. I am still on the fence with electric fans vs. the mechanical and time/ fab will be the factor.

Lots more to do! Thanks for looking!

More pics, this is the power plant i eventually want to swap into my 60 and the more reference shots the better.
Thanks for posting.

JEALOUS!!!!! You guys need a better work schedule... I would have loved to come over and play!

I dont know what it is about Mike but it sure seems like I get a whole heck of a lot more done when he is around. Looks like Mike switch over to some boogers?

That's because I drool on all your tools and that makes them easier to use.

Sorry man, we just don't work normal schedules so we got together whenever it lined up. We'll be at it again next Tuesday if you feel like calling in sick. As for the boggers, I'm doing an experiment with my old tires.

better work schedule? what could be better than working just 10 days a month?

WICKED progress man. How difficult was it to get the motor out since you're SOA?

no problem at all with the soa. just take it easy and the engine hoist at full lift and two people it works just fine.

Apparently, I need to get over to the 60 section more often! Like, more often than never. :D

I knew you were contemplating a diesel swap, but until I saw Boots' thread in the Hardcore section tonight, I didn't know you had actually started. Way to go! Are you gonna be done by mid June? I'm starting to worry that my diesel isn't going to be ready by then.. Hopefully, I'll see more progress on your thread than I'm seeing on mine lately. :)

Hey man good to see you over here! You are always welcome here. The 60 series forum is like Switzerland compared to the other forums :)

Yep this will be running and driving by late May. I need to have all the bugs worked out before taking on the Discovery Route. You need to get the diesel done because I am contemplating making it a diesel only run :D (make sure you tell the wife that).

I hope to have some more progress on this today but I got held over this AM and am working Sat/ Sun. Nice 4 day run for me. Plus the weather is crap right now. I do have monday and tuesday free and will have the motor mounts in and I will start fabbing the radiator mounts then.

I tried to use the stock rear but for whatever reason it just did not like the angles and was binding horribly. The stock did not seem like it was out of sequence but it was just not happy. I talked to 2 or 3 people that said similar things about issues using the stock driveline.

It was worth a shot.

I took a DC down to get it rebuilt and the best I could find in Portland was .095 wall tubing and they said it would be between $109 and $225 to get it done. I hope to pick it up later today.

Otherwise I am taking a break till wed doing some much needed yardwork and heading to the Zoo today with the family to enjoy the sun while it lasts.

How was the cleanup? Did the club have a decent turnout?

Clint
Dirtgypsy, how did you know your drive shaft was binding? I mean what were the symptoms? I'm just finishing my SOA and have a new low frequency vibration. Awesome build BTW
