89 4BD1T out of an NPR truck. Approx 200k on engine. Ran and drove the entire truck for about 2 weeks before pulling the engine.

A little steam cleaning today and next week starts the freshin up stage. New gaskets, valve adjust, filters, belts, some paint. Lots of little odds and ends to do.

This is going to be a bit of a lengthy build. I hope to have this in, fine tuned and running by memorial day weekend. I have about 5 other full day projects to throw in on top of it all as well.

My plan as far as drivetrain is as follows: 4BD1T with upgrade turbo, IDS adapter, Downey/ AA bell housing, current H55F. I am now running 37's for some OD but still have the 4.88's. This may be an issue down the road but for now will have to do.

Just to let you all know my budget for this is $2500. I bought the complete NPR for $2500 and have parted out almost $1800 of it. I still have items to sell and have yet to collect on about $100 in items already sold so I figure I am into the engine for a sum of $500. Breakdown of items so far are:

Engine $500
IDS kit $600
misc elec, gaskets, switches, filters etc $300

total $1400

Bear in mind I already had a lot of items before the swap like V8 conversion stuff, H55f, etc. I am pretty sure these items are necessary but will at least at this point have no extra incurred cost in the swap. I will fab all my own motor mounts, radiator mounts etc. I will do my best to keep a running tab on $$ spent. I will not be updating everyday but hope to get to at least one item a week till april when I will take a week off to do the swap. Wish me luck in my venture to the dark side and please feel free to spam, cross post, flame, ridicule, ask questions (even dumb ones). I will answer to the best of my ability and take pics along the way.

FINALLY! It's been so hard keeping this quiet. I'm glad it's finally out.

I helped Clint go pick up the truck and aside from the tranny gate being a guess it was fun to drive. No overdrive made it a slower day driving it back but the engine did great, especially for not being run for several years. It had been parked forever. It's going to be a fun build and this is going to be an ultimate rig.

The thing that makes me sick is the amazing deal you are working out. Incredible move to get a good diesel in that truck especially in this region where these kinds of engines are harder to find.

Love the glow plug switch!!

Awesome Clint!!! What a great project. Tons on my plate right now but I haven't forgot the time you've lent me a hand on my rig so don't be afraid to ask for an extra hand if you need it. Really looking forward to seeing this completed.

That switch rocks

I'm guessing 1.21 jiggawatts.

How much does that engine weigh?

Lol. Remember when we used to have that :bttf: tag?

I am very much looking forward to this build, Dirtgypsy! Get on it!!

I got some time to get up close and personal with the diesel this weekend. My wife took the kids to my sister-in-laws house and I have had the garage to myself for the last two days. It took a solid 10 hours yesterday and about 4 today to clean, regasket, paint and repair the engine. I still have some items left to do but its close to being drop in ready.

After initial tear down a bulk lot of parts went to Napa to get hot tanked. I really wanted to get some powder coating done but trying to stay in budget wouldn't allow. So with some effort the parts were cleaned and had a good 5-6 coats of VHT paint.

While the paint dried I got right to major disassembly:

The head weighs too much for my spagetti arms so the cherry picker helped out:

Head checked for tolerances, cleaned, and assembly set at TDC:

TDC marks:

Marks are on all three gears as well as in jection pump. Takes a lot of rotations to get these to line up.

I got into a groove and kinda forgot to take pics. The ones I did take are booring and for reference later. Here she sits as of now. I had to buy a new manifold and am having the injectors looked over. So my budget for a bigger turbo is on hold right now. I do have some OT, taxes, an engine to sell to get some more funds rolling in but for now its nickel and dime stuff thats eating up a lot!

So far another $450ish in parts have been added to the investment.

Enough jibber jabber:

I am really liking how easy this motor is to work on. So far no special tools, everything is going back together very easily.

I am sorry but I suck at taking pics!

Great job Clint, it's great being able to get into the engine and see how things are looking. For me it always helps visualize stuff when troubleshooting too. Looking forward to seeing your injectors bench flowed on Tuesday.

Nice work! It amazes me how fast you work.

I was going to give you crap about the June run when you posted pics of the engine but so far so good! :D

If you haven't yet, look at something like a Racor 400R with a 10 micron filter. Mine's been great with no water accumulation yet.

Mmmm so clean. Looks awesome!

thanks everyone! I am anxious to get this in and running. The 2F is coming out on the 4Th. I am hoping this goes in on the 18th of next month.

Ken is a 10 micron filter what is recommended? i found a nice 30 micron one with heater element but am wonderi if this is going to be enough.

Opinions vary. I have a 30 right now but will be adding a Walbro pusher pump at the tank when i install the larger tank and a 10 micron filter. The idea is to keep fuel as clean as possible and not stress your (expensive to fix) IP.

I think the heater element is unnecessary where we live. If it gets really cold you can run something like a concentrated anti-gel from a truck stop. There are housings that do have a hookup for a water warning, but I have yet to see any visible sign of water in the trap.

Here's the pump- (FRB-5) Auto Performance Engineering - Walbro fuel pumps and more

There, a nice +$250 or so for the odds and ends pile. :)

Awesome work on that motor!

I want to paint my 2F more, surface rust is ugly

Hi Chad,

I am hoping that with a basic upgrade on the turbo that I can run 20 psi of boost and get about 170 hp out of the engine. This is close to what Mike is running in his 4BTA and I really like the power that truck puts out.

Ran into a big delemna with the engine and I hate to this but the diesel swap is now on hold till probably June. I ran to a place in Portland called DFISpdx.com today. They ran some test on the injectors and they are completely shot. Initially they had thought that it would be about $250 to repair. Unfortunately these are specific to a few years and were notorious for having issues. Sure enough these were toast and it's a cool $1000 from Bosch for some new ones. That will kill my budget beyond recognition at this point.

So its on to other projects for now and saving my pennies for some new injectors.

I will take some pics of the injectors and post up shortly!

clint
