Nice work, I like the color combination.

Nice job, after a ton of work. Is the roof flat black, then? Did the stripes disappear after the paint fully dried?

Yes, the roof is flat black. I tried to use a cheap flat single stage but it striped, I tried twice with that. Then I used a cheap matte clear, that also had a couple stripes. The final thing I did was clear with an added flattener, that worked.

After all of the cussing and sanding I relearned two things. First, you get what you pay for and second gun control is much more important than you think it is. Gun time is the only way you learn to paint

Here is my seatbelt retractor repair I did. I couldn't get the seatbelt catch to work so I pulled off the cover. As I did the pieces of the cam fell out. I decided to glue the pieces back together and cast a new one in resin.

I tried to use a silicone mold kit but that was a disastrous mess. I then just used modeling clay and it worked like a charm. The resin amount was so small that I had to use an external heat source to get it to kick because the clay was so cold. The piece just needed a little finish filing and sanding to fit and work as it's supposed to. I also sewed on some new webbing.

The photo shows the glued piece and the piece I cast.

How hard is it to cast another?

Or can you walk me through the process?

Nice work tweek99. Curious how durable that modeling clay is? I’ve never used it.

During my lid project I had some leftover SEM 2 part epoxy, so I squirted into the plastic cartridge cap rather than into the garbage. The cap was about the size of a 12 gauge shotgun shell. Interestingly the SEM cures pretty damn hard and takes to grinding well. I did a quick test with my dremel just now. No idea if this would be better or worse for the small part @hooter needs. If either of you wants this chunk of material I can drop it in the mail.

5 minutes of grinding. You can see it’s possible to get a sharp edge with this stuff. The small holes are just air pockets.

This self leveling stuff even picked up the code of the lid.

The modeling clay is just for my cast. You just press the piece into the clay, pull the piece straight out then pour in the resin and let it cure, then just pop it out. Trim excess and file it to shape. The hole in the center you drill undersized and use a small file to make it fit the center shaft. It's pretty easy

Gun time is the only way you learn to paint

Yes - so buy yourself a pickup bed trailer and paint it, and then get a couple of junkyard hoods and paint those. Paint your lawn tractor. Paint stuff that doesn't matter, but try to do it right and you'll learn where the limits of the gun and your skills are. By painting junkyard hoods, you can see just what it takes to make paint run, or be dry, or a host of other issues. I even checked out library books in the early 1990s (pre-Internet) on 'how to paint your car'.

This flat finish is a bear and the paint guy and all the guys I know who paint for a living have said flat finishes are tough. I wound up over reducing so each pass blends more easily but it gives just a bit of gloss. My biggest mistakes are letting the gun get too close when the panel is horizontal.

As for practice, I figured if I was buying the materials I was going to go for it. Repainting sucks but it's part of the learning curve. I discovered metallics are very picky about gun control, too close=tiger stripes. Also, don't forget to tack before each stage. I had to reshoot a door because of a Halo from the sealer having texture. It drove me crazy and I couldn't leave it. The books are a good start, that's what I did. I also asked my body buddies alot of questions.

Body work is done so now I'm driving myself crazy with an intermittent sticking float. I've pulled the top three times now. No crud in clear filter. Using stock hard lines on carb, blew clean. After the second cleaning I was thinking my pump was dirty.

Now, cleaning number three and am convinced the pump is cruddy. Now it's a moot point because it's now leaking all over.. The pieces causing my headache we're very small and few in number.

Unsure of what is leaking all over, so my suggestion may be off the mark. What about disconnecting the fuel line and turning engine over to pump some fuel in a container.

Yes I wasn't very clear. The pump itself is now leaking. The diaphragm must me cracked because fuel is dripping rather quickly from the bottom side of the pump on to the floor at an idle. It has not done that until now.

New Toyota fuel pump from cruiser addiction and I'm back in business.

This weekend is prom, so I have been giving 4 speed lessons. :steer:. She is getting it just needs more practice. Her boyfriend doesn't want to drive it. Kids these days, rather have a new phone than a cool vehicle.

Your build looks great. It might be time to run this boyfriend off....
