The crockpot looks fantastic! Nice work!
Thanks man. Glad the fridge paint is working out for you. Yours looks great as well!

News Flash! I drove the CP into work today with the top installed. The shimmy, death wobble or whatever you want to call it that occurred at around 58 mph has mysteriously disappeared! It must have something to do with the added weight or at least the weight distribution front to rear. The ride is much smoother now but it does feel a bit more tipsy in the corners with the top on. It's a tall rig (92" to the top of the roof rack) so I'll have to be careful with it in off camber situations and going under low limbs. It does look mighty impressive though, towering over everything else in the parking lot.

Whoring out the CP for a few more pics:

I posted a while back about the rear axle of the CP not acting right. For whatever reason somebody in the past swapped in a custom Currie rear axle. It's basically a Ford 9 inch with tubes cut to match the Land Cruiser diff offset. It is a LSD and I believe the shafts are chromoly. The LSD has been acting up. At one point it felt like it was locked full time. I put friction modifier in hoping to loosen it up and smooth things out. When I went to top it off with gear oil it took 2 quarts! It had been run low for who knows how long. It ran better with oil in it (duh) but it still wasn't running like it should be.

I decided this weekend to pull the third member and check it out to see what was going on. The gears and bearings actually look really good. It is fairly obvious that this thing doesn't have a ton of miles on it. However, the LSD clutches are smoked. I found some decent sized metal pieces down on the magnet. These are a couple of the little ears that obviously sheared off of the metal plates in the LSD. I'm hoping that I can just re-do the plates, put in new gaskets and seals and button it back up. If the center section is garbage I'll look into a locker. We'll see..........

Got a closer look at this thing on the bench last night. Guess what? It has a mechanical locker in it already! It's not an LSD as I was lead to believe. The metal pieces I found were not from clutch plates as I originally thought. The are little tabs that broke off a shim that goes behind the spring in the locker. It looks like it functions okay without these tabs. I will try to find a new shim but I'm not sure what brand of locker I've got so it's hard to know where to look. This all makes sense now. The drive ability issues I was having are inherent to a mechanical locker. It was doing what it was supposed to do all along! Danggit...if I had known there was a locker in there I wouldn't have gone to this trouble. Oh we'll......

At least you know for sure now!

I think I might have questioned a locker a while back...:D

Well it damn sure has acted like a locker the whole time so the thought was in the back of my mind. Adam had mentioned (and it was in the for sale description as well) that it was a LSD. Currie is known for dropping LSD's in their 9" street units so I assumed he was right. All I knew was that if it was a LSD it wasn't acting right and that it was run way low on oil and needed to be checked out. Surprise surprise.........I guess it is good to finally know the reason why it changes lanes when I shift gears or go on/off the throttle and why the truck rolls 3 feet before the parking brake stops it...damn mechanical locker lash. too bad it wasn't an ARB hiding in there. I guess I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth though. I guess I can cross "REAR LOCKER" off my to-do list.

Just confirmed with Currie that it is a Detroit Locker. Parts ordered. Booyah!

Locker is back together and rear axle is back in working order! Working on a rusted out ambulance door next.

Okay, it's been a while since I posted up. I worked hard to get the Crockpot road-ready enough to make the ONSC Hurricane Creek Trip on August 15-17. Rear ambulance doors are now rust-free and painted. My son, Nathan and I went on the trip with the group. The Crockpot ran great all the way from Charlotte to the NC/TN line and tackled the trails with no issues. The trip was fantastic! On the way home on the home stretch (about 8 miles from our house) the CP started running hot. I pulled over and let it cool and re-filled the radiator with water from our coolers. Started it back up and made it another couple of miles before it got hot again. I decided that rather than nurse it home two miles at the time and risk engine failure I would just call for a tow. Apparently the head gasket let go. The truck starts up and runs fine. It just gets hot real quick. I'm going to do some more investigation this week but I feel sure that the issue is head gasket related. I'm proud of the old truck for getting us there and taking more abuse than has been dished out to it in a long time. I wish we could have limped it home just for bragging rights. Oh well.......Here are some pics from our most epic adventure:

That looks like it was an awesome trip :D

Why are you so convinced that it's the HG that let go? Make sure to check to see if there is oil in coolant / coolant in oil, or if the radiator overflow produces bubbles when you stick it into a bottle of water.

Johnny, The reason I believe it is the HG is because there are no leaks anywhere in the cooling system and the radiator ,thermostat and water pump are practically new. It wasn't hot enough outside to cause an overheating situation. The overflow just boils over very quickly. I am going to do the normal checks (milkshake and bubbles) tonight to confirm my HG theory. It got late on me last night and I was more concerned with just getting home and getting a shower than messing around with it.
