Contest-Solve bent steering box mystery

First off, thank you @SuperBuickGuy for putting some tech in this thread. As a licensed auto dismantler, I have stripped more than one cruiser that looked like your pic. I've seen impacts that have shattered the wheel and left hair imbedded in the windshield. No bent steering column. That opens the door for 'other ' theories.

Second, to all you lurkers out there, HIT THE LIKE BUTTON for the stories you like. These artists deserve something more for all their efforts. Besides I'm not beyond being influenced by public opinion.:D

Cripes SuperBuickGuy, none of us intended for this thread to get so dark, guess we should probably keep our mouths shut about carnage. Actually I have not had time to read through the other post, they are probably full of carnage?????

I don't think it was intended to be dark. Just an example of what can happen. Now back to the drinking and writing!

If I don't get a chance to say it later: MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone taking time from the holidays to read this!

Merry Christmas to you and to the rest of the gang here on MUD

I will drink to that...when I get home. Have some fine doppelbocks chilling

enjoying a flight of Tequilas right now - just opened the most expensive bottle I ever bought; on account of Christmas

So amongst my several dozen steering box cores I unearthed this 'gem' of a column with a double bend in the column tube. I did not remove this column from a vehicle or purchase it as an individual component. It came as part of a huge bulk purchase when I bought out Midwest Landcruiser in 1990. So I don't know the real back story here.

The contest is to provide the most ENTERTAINING story of how this column got bent. Knowing what it takes to remove one of these properly should provide enough marginal tech to keep the thread in tech. Contest will run until Dec 31.

Prize? TBD! At a minimum, it will include one of the oil filter coolers I have listed in the classifieds. Depending on how things go, I might be inclined to sweeten the pot with some Mark's Off Road shackles or skid plates.View attachment 1369248

Not be needin' any reeward. But it looks like the owner of that was in a crash. Hard crash hit the steer wheel real hard with his sternum. Send the prize to Salvation Army, please.

Maybe this will sweeten the chances of my post getting more likes (or dislikes)

There is also several 10 hr versions of the mystical Pink Fluffy Unicorns dancing on rainbows :)

Again guys ... watch out for these tricky creatures... they will fool you into destruction of your cruiser :meh:

Uh, no. Unicorns it is not.

Over 1200 views and very few likes is because this is a forum full of neo-geezers whose idea of a great Christmas present is something Metric labeled 'Snap On'; and probably last went to see a movie in a theater when there was a Clinton smoking cigars in the White House (don't go there).

The only way to get more "likes", using visual aids, with said crowd, is with something like this:

My steering shaft just bent in two directions - and that's a story in itself.

I don't know where all these stories are coming from. Perhaps it's the fabulous prizes that are dragging these yarners out of the wood work.

But I know that steering box and shaft, I was there when it was modified like that.

It was a while back, when I was still new to the Landcruiser scene. As a matter of fact, many of us in our club were still fairly new. One member, I'm sure you Awl know of him, was a really good welder, but still a little shy on engineering skills.

And I'll tell you right now, that steering box and shaft is not off an FJ, it's off a BJ.

Well any way, this welder that we Awl know wanted to build a header for the BJ, so he got himself a bunch of stainless steel tube and elbows and as he always does, welded up a beautiful header, graceful curves, outstanding TIG beads, absolutely stunning workmanship and exhaust gas tight joints. Every pipe exactly the same length so that every cylinder would have the exact same back pressure, none of the curves more than 90* in one turn.

A fawking french horn maker would be jealous of his creation.

I was there when this welder that we Awl know went to install the header. I got a tell you, I've never seen this guy so dejected. This beautiful piece of work, art really, stuck out so far from the block that it hit the steering shaft. Yes, the very steering shaft that is shown in the OP.

Did I mention how dejected this welder that we Awl know was. I'm telling you, he broke, ready to throw it all away, and what I mean by that, was buy a Jeep. NOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

It was a good thing I was there when he went to install that header, because I saved the day.

I'm the one that said, "hey, we can just bend the steering shaft towards the frame".
So that's what we did. We took a big crow bar, the 5' long type, and just slid it down towards the frame, sliding it across the valve cover and under the steering shaft, and just pushed up, modifying the shaft so that the new header would fit. And those beautiful, finely crafted headers slipped in to place, and a Landcruiser world disaster was averted.

No I got'a tell you, that ol' BJ lost a bit of it's turning radius, and was, well, down right awful for wheeling,, and just as bad for street driving so this welder that we Awl know sold it someone in the States. I have no idea how it ended up at Midwest Landcruisers, or eventually you Mark. The buyer, if I recall, was from some where in the mid-west, but I'm sure it wasn't a shop. Maybe a guy with two or three young dogs, I don't quite remember, but the buyer was pretty cool though.

So, now you know the real story behind this mod, and as for a prize, I'd be happy with a fan resistor, so I can once again have both high, and low speeds on my heater fan.

Artists (if you want to call him that) rendition of the events that led up to the bent shaft, obtained during the OJ trial. This is also my paper ballot for the most entertaining story.

n0rth - that should be on a T-shirt!

This is an easy one:

There exists a fantastic pile of unsold parts in Marks hoard......
Mark attempts to extract this part from underneath the pile with a Toyota Forklift....
Part bends.......
Mark is sad at bent part.......
Mark is happy that forklift with recently rebuilt carb is turning over on first try....
Marks ponders the philisophical duality of so much Toyota happiness and sadness. :)

So, if you happen to be the lucky winner Kevin, are you going to come south to collect your prize? I hear the local LC club is going back out to Saline Valley in a few weeks. I'm planning to be out there regardless.

Hi Mark,

I hope your warehouse woes are coming to an end.
I will definitely be back to DV and the Saline valley in particular, but not this year.
The :princess: and I are going to spend a couple of weeks bobbing around the Caribbean this winter, and be making a trip to the east coast in the summer, so that'll be it for travels this year.

But, I cashed in the Suburban for a Chev AWD van that I have put a 3" lift on and slightly camperized it. So this will be our back country camping rig. From what I saw when I was there, it would easily traverse the Lippincott Pass trail, and even the Steel Pass trail with a slightly larger than stock tire. I figure I can get a 32" tire on it with the lift I have.

So, if I win, I won't be picking up the prize personally, at least not this year.
