Unfortunately, I have developed an overheating issue in Clinton, OK. No real worries right now... Figured I'm going to let it cool down and have a beer. :)

What else is new with a 30 year old truck on a cross country road trip.

This setback screws with some significant plans. So we'll see how this plays out.

3B running rougher than I have been accustomed to so a good possibility it might be a 3B HG. What else is new with a 30 year old engine that probably say for a number of years after minimal use and then be put to the test on the American highways.

Head winds on I-40 have been over 40mph sustained so the truck is working uber hard to even get up slight inclines.

We shall see what happens. All a part of the journey, the trip, the reality of contingency and irony. :)

Worst case scenario plays out like this:

I have a blown HG: I limp truck to ABQ to @cruiserdan casa, pull head, send to machine shop. Order HG. Fly home, work, take care of obligations. Once head is ready, fly back install head and drive home.

Sometimes this is what happens with old trucks. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. All is not rosy with 30 trucks--even Land Cruisers.

Ahh the plains, reminds me a line from a classic movie...Figured the rockies would be a lot more rocky, that John Denver is full of s***!

Well it's been running at highway temps speeds for about 5 hrs, albeit slow.

The winds headwinds have died down a bit and the engine seems to be running ok. No overheating but gauge shows it running warmer.

One tool I didn't bring: digital thermometer.

Thanks to @joekatana for reminding me. :)

I picked one up and shot around the engine at idle and seems to be running warmer but not terribly hot.

After a few decent climbs up inclines at highway speeds on I-40W, temps climbed above 200* but went back down on declines (as tested by digital thermometer), which is SOP.

@wesintl reports just below redline on gauge is 220* and I got close to that mark, never passed it not got into the red thankfully.

Anyway, crashing for a bit then finish off the leg to ABQ in the early AM.

Drive safe man! You are probably running hot due to fuel load if you haven't adjusted your pump... It doesn't take much in the 3B to bring up the temp in the altitude.

I never drove the 3B normally aspirated, but the more I think about this the more I think this may be the issue.

@beno hasn't been below 3500' for quite some time, and I doubt his 3B IP has ever been tweaked for altitude. Too much fuel in a diesel makes it hot, as opposed to the cooling of an overly rich mixture in a gas engine.

It's starting to. The alt of clinton ok is 1600 ft. Hardly high alt. Heavy wheels and tires with a 40 mph headwind and a output of 90 hp pushing a brick on long grades will warm up the ole 3b. It's not made for highway speeds. it's made for bumping along the outback 50kpm. atmospheric pressure is starting to affect that's why all diesels should have a turbo :D
just drop her down a gear to keep cool.

you have to be used to the slow lane, shoulder and flashers in a na 3b :lol:
