Giving the primer one more day to cure before color coat. Almost there!

Scored this little gem a couple months ago. Been looking for a long time but could never stomach the asking prices. This one popped up for a much friendlier price so I went for it. It was listed for another older model Toyota so I think that is the only reason it was cheaper. Phew.

Let the paint dry for 5 days.. and couldn't wait longer. I installed the nice SOR hump seal kit. Fit perfectly! Then I very carefully put the hump on. Its not fully bolted down, going to give it another day to chill. The contrast to the fresh and clear coated paint, vs the old and non-clear coated paint is pretty stark. :p But not a worry, I will paint the floors next year. But more important, the winter project is a floor mat for the front. So most of it will be hidden. SUPER happy with this and can't wait for some drives shortly.

Driving with the hump back on was so much better. Hahaha. I think I have an exhaust leak somewhere. It was mighty stinky. Gave me a good contact high… or it was just the happiness.

Ok I wasn’t crazy. Leaking at both ends of the muffler. Anyone know how to get a full seal on these kinds of slip joints and clamps? Just tightening doesn’t do it… seems like you would need some kind of heat proof dope/sealer? No clue

Mine is just clamped like yours, no issues. That is an OEM muffler (maybe from SOR), right? Wonder if your muffler or tailpipe has blockage. You don’t have a juvenile neighbor who grows potatoes do you? 😂

Yeah this is the SOR system with a OEM muffler. I injected the smoke from the tailpipe so it should be free flowing (potato fee). I didn't see anything up in the engine bay thankfully. Not sure why its leaking so much, when I put it together it didn't seem like a tight fit though. I may try to find something like this:

This or some "muffler sealer" between the pipe and the muffler.
 
Weld the seams?
That is my last stand option. :) The last system that was in there was basically all welded in one long piece. It made getting it out from under the truck like a puzzle challenge. Not impossible but definitely annoying.

Muffler sealant makes it a bitch to pull apart but it's doable. Welding would be best but not exactly serviceable like you said.

I'd try some sealant. I have used it many times when replacing mufflers, even with that butt joint style clamp you were considering. Those are used all the time on diesel applications and I used sealant on them sometimes. Some service instructions have you apply it to the doughnuts also. Not often, but they are out there.

Do you have the male end of the pipe into the muffler enough to clear the expansion cuts?
Yeah, its just leaking like crazy from the cuts and other areas. I believe the pipe is definitely in past the cuts. Its the same situation at the front of the muffler too on that joint. I'll try and see how far past the cuts the pipe is.
 
Yikes, I kinda forgot to update this. The weather has been absolute crap the past few months (no top on the rig) and also out of town trips, so 40 time was taken away. That being said. I did fix the exhaust leak. Different clamps didn't solve the issue. I ended up using a high temp exhaust sealant at the joints with the clamps. That did the trick! There was no way a clamp was going to make the seal alone.
The weather was great today so I decided to end the year with a drive in the 40. No more super stinky exhaust. Truck ran great!

On the way home a car almost hit me head on. Thankfully the brakes worked very well and stopped in time. Phew! Idiots somehow didn't see me coming right at them. Thankfully didn't end the year in a car accident. Looking forward to many more projects on this truck in the coming year. :)
 
This steering box seems to be leaking worse and worse now. I replaced the seal well over a decade ago. I guess it’s time for round two? Do people actually run grease in these and not oil?
Not trying to skip a repair…. But replacing the seal sucked. 😂

No grease for me, just oil. Seal and double check condition of shaft along with condition of bearing. I do have one new OEM bearing on-hand if the spec is out. Did you grease the seal prior to install? Many times they need NLGI 2 for initial install so it doesn't tear the seal initially.

I honestly have no idea if I greased the seal when I replaced it. I would hope but I think that was in 2003/4 maybe! :D I am going to order a new seal and give it a good inspection on install. Hopefully everything checks out and the rubber was just getting old.
