I like the one that involves pole!STRIPPERNot the pole kind
.
Much as I appreciate a good stripper, I'd be worried about using it on a plastic housing. Good you have blasting available via KIm. Did you get leftover paint from Mike? What is grey looks a little darker than what's on Bonnie, which is the mix per Toyota code. A good automotive paint shop can use their photo gun and get a match to the actual color of the bumper. I'm also wondering if the base was just left on the fender and masked. If so you may be biting off more than just painting the housing.STRIPPERNot the pole kind

Those looked pretty worked to get shiny paint, I’d scuff and paint. If you go all the way back down to metal you’ll see all the original imperfections, have to do coats of high build and maybe skim … just a rats nest where you prolly don’t need one. Love the transmission tech this morning, unexpected in this threadNever considered sand blasting since I don’t have one but asked Kim if they have one at work and they do. It’s best way to do it for sure. Gonna have to look into something as small things like this could easily be handled at home.
I only got the two exterior colors that were left from Bonnie. If my memory serves me right, Mike did say he used same grey as Bonnie. Like you, it does appear slightly darker on Clyde’s bumper compared to Bonnie.Much as I appreciate a good stripper, I'd be worried about using it on a plastic housing. 47 years?!?Actually, our 47th anniversary was 5 weeks ago. You gotta wonder why? We were very young. I had my FJ40, she got the proverbial station wagon for carrying all of the kids “stuff”. My son was 2, daughter being born very soon and this F’ing thing broke down so many times. This was a brand new vehicle . I am thankful for those people whose homes she knocked on doors to use their phone. After 3 other engines, GM put in their Targetmaster diesel V-8.
We Visited her parents in Vermont for Christmas…-41*F that night and the diesel fuel turns to jelly….4 days later are still dosing it with kerosene to loosen the fuel. We finally had something she could drive UNTIL:
It is finally spring 1982. She pulls into a Gulf service station we would go to for diesel fuel and the attendant was waving at my son, distracted and fill the tank with gasoline. She got 1/2 way home and it dies. Long story short…Gulf paid for the repairs, traded it in for a new Volvo…mustard yellow like my other FJ40…View attachment 4074358
That sounds a vomit comet! My dad bought one of those, we had a small StarCraft popup trailer we pulled with it out to Big Bend. We got there late and the park rangers had already left the campground, so dad setup in the spot the though we had reserved (Cottonwood Canyon). About 11pm Ranger comes knocking, whe had setup in the wrong spot and folks wouldn’t swap after figuring it out. Dad was pissed, hooked up and tried to move spots w/o pushing in the slides … shattered the back window. We had an 8 hr drive home that weekend without a back window in that stinky Olds diesel. The whole family hated that car from then on![]()
I am guessing those guys at GM knew that they were going to lay an egg, but they were looking down the barrel of some EPA CAFE standard and thought, "This is the best bad idea we have..."I am seeing that being an old guy these days, I have a ton of experiences that I can reflect on
This is so fitting! I would love to shove this up the collective a$$es$ of those GM engineers who said …” yep, this is great.. APPROVED” along with the guy that approved the heater core location in my 2001 Ford F-150 and the guy who designed the clutch assembly in my 1990 Harley Ultra Classic. This guy I actually met at the York, PA final assembly plant in 1990 who said to me with a proud smile on his face…” how do you like that new clutch , great isn’t it?”
Are you serious? You cannot get the bike in neutral at a red light.. it is horrible. “Oh, some of the bikes need a replacement push rod from the clutch cylinder.” Does anyone besides you know about this?? He walked away.
The F-150? That heater core is behind the passenger airbag. The repair warrants the complete removal of the dash..9 hours for a $29.00 replacement and a manual that warns you every 4th paragraph about accidentally detonating the air bags upon removal or installation.
Is the timing gear cover leaking/weeping?You talking about resealing the entire timing gear cover or just the outer crankshaft seal? Outer crankshaft seal and key ordered today.
If stars line up I’ll put it together this weekend.
Something tells me this balancer is not coming off for a long, long time...Yeah I would do the whole cover. Here is the tech sheet, they mention two different activators. I will be home in a few and look to see which I used.
Here is what I used:

If it were me, I would need time to place the key, and then knock it out with the balancer and then time to go get a shop light to find the key on the floor, and then time to go get a second light b/c the first light has a dead battery, etc...@greenbeast I mention Loctite 640 specifically because it has a slightly slower drying time giving you more time to get the pulley in place and the nut tight. If you use an activator you will dramatically reduce that time, it's not a problem but you should be aware you won't have any dilly dally time!
Give it a good 24hours before you put it back in service either way.
Are we talking 6 speed vs 4?Why the 6l80 and not the more compact 4L60?
When we are talking stock or near stock (under 1000 HP) both can be built to handle that HP for similar money.
I am pretty sure Ultra Grey is rated for oils, heat, etc...Clyde 0.5
Outer timing cover seal and gasket arrived so hope to address tonight or tomorrow. Cruiser outfitter always delivers good service.
Curious what everyone uses for gasket sealer prior to installing the gasket?
@Lifelong40Fan graciously enough to send me crankshaft nut. Classic cruiser delivered on 3 groove pulley (what a great group to deal with).
Wife dropped ball on ordering the socket and Loctite. Something about busy at work…sheesh. Order placed here Monday.
Ready to get her on road and running again.
Isn't that piece plastic? I don't think it will do very well w/ sand blast.Never considered sand blasting since I don’t have one but asked Kim if they have one at work and they do. It’s best way to do it for sure. Gonna have to look into something as small things like this could easily be handled at home.

You need to fix that.....I don't have a dog
